QPR boss rules out early contract offers

    QPR manager Harry Redknapp

    14/10/2013
    By David McIntyre

QPR manager Harry Redknapp says the club have no intention of offering new contracts to players before the end of the season.

Skipper Clint Hill, popular midfielder Alejandro Faurlin and in-form goalkeeper Rob Green are among those whose deals expire next summer.

Faurlin has made it clear he would re-sign rather keep his options open were he offered a new contract sooner rather than later.

Hill’s QPR contract expires in 2014

But Redknapp insists their futures will not be decided until promotion-chasing Rangers know which division they will be in next term.

He said: “I don’t think you can [offer new contracts] when you’re in the Championship.

“You’ve got to wait and see what happens, so you can’t be offering people new deals. If we get up it’s a different game, then you can look at it.

“At the moment you can’t be giving people big deals because we’ve got to look carefully at the money we spend on wages next year, depending on what league we’re in.”

But will those players be motivated after hearing that?

But it is the reality, if the players we have perform to their potential, we should be in the mix for promotion.

If they perform above that, then they should be negotiating for EPL salaries.

    There is the incentive

I would have thought that would give them extra motivation?

They should be but we risk losing them elsewhere but I dont think they are key long term players so it wouldnt really matter too much.

    Very sensible decision

Next season is another world in terms of transfer dealings and general preparation, and I'm all for a culture where players earn their new contracts.

Fernandes and Beard have learnt their lesson

I'd make an exception for SWP if his contract is up. Having him locked in for another few years would be a weight off my mind.

I dont think most, most are still on their PL contracts as wage cuts were not included. I wouldnt give many players increased contracts. Im struggling to think of anyone Id keep and give a better contract too.

If you can do relegation clauses then I'd have thought you can do promotion clauses - salary X in the Championship and Y if we got promoted (and revert back if we came back down).

We should be planning for all eventualities IMO, not none.

But as we know Harry is loyal to players put in the extra yards, and play their team roles.

So Harry will be keeping players pushing hard, knowing he will reward that loyalty.

    Harry, club, players - win,win,win

Or should I say players that fit in with Harry's style

I think the change to club power, rather than player power, is a direction that benefits supporters & club

It depends on the player - some will happily chase that dangled carrot and some may feel like they're being used and will be sent packing for upgrades at the first opportunity.

Uncertainty over your future is only easy if you're supremely confident.

Come May, when the rumours of buying anyone and everyone start, we might lose players who would at least be valuable squad players.

Everyone is individual and needs to be handled as such. A quiet word of promise to some, an opportunity to impress and earn their rewards to others.

Blanket statements aren't necessarily the way forward in my mind.
