Chelsea striker Fernando Torres admits he has to do more to justify his £50m price tag. The Spaniard, currently on the sidelines with a knee injury, concedes that he needs to score more goals but he is confident that he will deliver if he is given time. Torres scored 23 goals last season in all competitions, and has won the Champions League, Europa League and FA Cup in his time at Stamford Bridge. He has scored 37 goals in 139 appearances in his Chelsea career so far but his move from Liverpool - where he scored an impressive 81 goals in 142 appearances - has not been the success most predicted so far. "The people are looking at me thinking I should do much better and it's true," he told Chelsea TV. "The reason you pay that money for someone is that he has shown in the past he is worth that. "Now what you have to show is you can have the same value or even more value for things you have done at Chelsea. "I know I have many things to do at this club to give the confidence back to the owner. The amount of goals I scored last season should be the minimum," said the 29-year-old, who is currently sidelined with a knee injury. "I want to ask that of myself but I have enough time. I signed a five-and-a-half year contract and I'm sure the future can only be better." No regrets "I signed a five-and-a-half year contract and I'm sure the future can only be better." Fernando Torres Torres insists that despite his difficulties at Chelsea, he has no regrets about making the move from Merseyside. "I'm so happy to have made that hard decision in my career to come to Chelsea," he said. "Over time you can see all the success that we've had as a team so everything was worth it." And Torres believes that whilst improvements must be made, he believes the criticism directed at him has been over the top. "There has been an overreaction about everything. Overreact when I did a miss or if I have a red card or I hit the crossbar instead of scoring a goal. "It was a good season (last year), a good number of goals (23) that gave us a chance to fight for trophies but if you ask the people, they will say he can do better, should do better. "It's like I said, with me good things are looking so-so and bad things are looking really bad." http://www1.skysports.com/football/...mits-he-needs-to-score-more-goals-this-season ---------------------- You bellend
It took him a couple of years to figure that out. He has shown a some improved performance of late but I have to laugh at the some Chelsea fans saying he's getting back to the form he showed for us, he's gotten nowhere near that kind of form whatsoever and not for one minute justified his 50m price tag in the whole time he's been there.
Cant disagree with that He has been playing better but I dont think will ever be the player he was with us (early days)
He's been there how long, anything but early days, it will take more than 1 quick turn in a match to convince me. It's the one thing I have seen him do that reminded me of the player he was then as he could always do that. he just does not have that pace any more. unless they put a nitro up his arse he never will run that fast again
Yeah I meant early days with us but same as you say hes been there a good while now Dont get our fans who say its a shame he isnt the player he was. are they on dugs?! I dont a flying ****, I hope he gets worse!
great deal for us in the end.... Suarez was to bought to partner Torres but ended up replacing him after he jumped to cfc, 50m donkey and long may it continue.
should be let go at contract end if not sold. The way his first two clubs are going he'd not play for either so i am guessing he is still hoping to swan over to italy for a few years and not score there either. loss? 40, 45mil? nice... add the wages to that one for those 37 goals in how many years?
I agree with this^ Quote from 'Nando, talking about trophies won: "I'm so happy to have made that hard decision in my career to come to Chelsea," he said. "Over time you can see all the success that we've had as a team so everything was worth it." Some might disagree with me, but I can honestly say that knowing I had performed to the best of my ability throughout my career would mean more to me than having trophies that I didn't make enough of a contribution to winning.
What? He scored 8 goals in 36 league appearances last season. The league is where the best strikers get judged, not Europa league/Fa Cup/League Cup, how can he consider last year a good one from his perspective? Though he did contribute a good number of goals in the Europa which they ultimately won so I'll give him that. I'm sure he doesn't regret the move, but surely on reflection the timing was all wrong for him? At the time no one could of foreseen the run of games without scoring, and could well go down as one of the worst transfers in history (along with Carroll). And now with Eto'o, Ba and Lukaku all in the mix it's only going to get harder for him to make an impression and get back to anywhere near the same level he was on in the period between 2007 and 2010. He needs to move back to Spain where he can be loved again, because he's the sort of striker that needs to be idolised and relied on by the team.
Think it's funny when everyone talks about his 23 goals last year... Yes 23, but he scored 8 in 28 games in the Premiership, 3 in the Champ League, 6 in Europa and 2 each in CC and FAC. 1 each in Club World Cup & Community Shield. Taking away the 2 from "friendly games" that's then only 21 goals. His CC goals were against Leeds & Wolves. 2 of his in Champ League where against FC NORDSJAELLAND who were pony. Take all that into account and it's hardly like he's been scoring in the big games against big clubs. I wonder how many "winning goals" he had scored last year as well, and not just getting 1 in a 3 goal win or something.
yup, it's no coincidence he done well at athletico where he was number 1 forward and again with us where he was again very much relied on to score the majority of the teams goals. Then Chelsea where for the 1st time in the prime of his career he was behind others like Dropba and just another squad player on a fat wage packet who could be subbed if he diddnt perform, which evidently he diddnt. I think it's deffo the worst deal in Prem history, worse than Carroll and even veron and shevchenko IMHO because he was pretty much the best striker on the planet at the time and diddnt go to a foreign league and have to adapt. and that makes me warm inside. ;D
Studge does that thing now where he comes onto the right fullback and either gets a yard on them, or squares them up and comes inside. How he scored against Palace and Montenegro. That was Torres' thing once (remember his first Anfield goal against Terry? ) No-one worries if he gets in that position anymore. I'd still take him back for £7m to warm our bench though, or loan him back like Milan did with Shevchenko. we'd be doing the Chavs a favour.
That's true, let's be honest a lot went against him towards the end.. Hodgson tactics (can any striker thrive in a Hodgson team?), injuries and the loss of Alonso, also wasn't Gerrard out injured a fair bit under Hodgson? I always felt we kept rushing him back from injuries too quick, it's remarkable to even think back then our back-up striker was N'Gog
it was actually longer than a year. He wasn't his best under Kenny who managed him for six months but he did seem to be getting there but he was poor under Hodgson (agree with your reasoning) and also for the last four to six months under Rafa too. I agree he missed Alonso but he also missed Gerrard who had a lot of injuries around that time. The team was also suffering after the loss of Mascherano (although that was under Woy) and lack of investment too.
