My sole bet of the day, Lockwood ran like a drain in the opener. The gambled on winner, an Irish Group 3 filly previously stuffed in Group 1 company, collected easily, suggesting that it was a Group 2 contest in name only.

In the Middle Park, Astaire set out to make all and looked to be coming to the end of his tether but found more when pressed by stablemate Hot Streak with Justice Day staying on for third. None of the big names got into the race: how much was that down to the ground? If Astaire wins at Newmarket next year it will be the July Cup, not the Guineas.

The Dewhurst became a game of cat and mouse between the three held up principals; however, at the business end of the race neither Outstrip or Anjaal picked up and favourite War Command ground out victory over Cable Bay. No rush to get on this one for the 2014 Guineas. At least they will stop bleating on about O’Brien not having had a Group 1 two year old winner this year!

How brain dead are the jockeys at York?

Years ago, when there was “soft” in the going description the place to be was the stands rail. In races on the round course, they always used to come across to the stands rail and in sprint races the betting reflected the draw.

Since the drainage was done, that rule no longer holds. In the last two races at York, the fields have stuck to the rail and the winners have come up the middle of the track.

Prediction for the Cesarewitch: the winner is carrying nine stone or less.

I wonder what price Scatter Dice was in running for the Cesarewitch after she missed the break by 10 lengths?! Remarkable how well she won in the end!

I had an EW on the runner up at 25-1 so I wish she had stayed in stalls completely.
