I'm afraid that says more about you and your friends. Are you saying you didn't find the fishing trip funny? Or Nicholson teaching them how to play cards?
I don't think you're necessarily right to call it a comedy. By your reasoning a scene in any film which makes you laugh you have to put it down as a comedy. I laugh at the end of Moonraker, because it's so ****in bad (the story, the graphics, the acting etc), it's comical, but James Bond Films aren't comedies. Just because they have brief comedy moments in them doesn't make them comedies.
One scene does not make a comedy. If that were true, by your logic almost every film ever made would be a comedy.
Lots of films have funny parts in them, that does not mean they are 'comedies'. Anyway it's a pointless discussion - you think it's a comedy, others don't. Done.
No there's a distinct difference between the two. With Moonraker you're laughing at the film because you think it's naff or dated, but it was never intended to be a comedy. OFOTCN is intended to make you laugh and that's why it's denoted a comedy drama.
Or the basketball game. Or the imaginary watching of the World Series Baseball. I wouldnt have it in my top ten comedies but it certainly had many funny moments. Thats why they cast comedic actors, Danny De Vito, Christoper Lloyd and the great Scatman Crothers. The film critic calls it a comedy too. http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/great-movie-one-flew-over-the-cuckoos-nest-1975
I mentioned Two scenes amongst many more throughout the movie. Bloody hell there's some miserable buggers on here.
Off topic slightly but why does anyone ever bow down to a critic or journalist? What makes that person more qualified to summarise something? I've spent hundreds of hours with sports journalists at live events and 90% of the time they're not even watching, just looking up when the crowd reacts. It really does stun me. How the hell is disputing whether a film is a comedy or not 'miserable'? Also I've laughed at Han Solo in the Star Wars films in moments that are intended to be funny. Another well known comedy.
Clearly I'm not miserable as I would not have already listed 10 comedies (some of which have been mentioned by others also) you arse. I just do not see how you can consider OFOTCN a comedy.
Sorry son but anyone who can sit through OFOTCN without laughing is either miserable or a pretentious little tit.
Borat is my favourite followed by Dumb and Dumber. Sacha Baron Cohen should have retired after that film instead of trying to carry on with the likes of Bruno and the Dictator which are just terrible for the most part. The Hangover is quite funny but the same thing again, just watched Hangover 3 and it is dire to the extent of Chow being totally unfunny throughout. Heres hoping Dumb and Dumber Too is half as good as the original.
Fair enough, I didnt see that. I also didnt realise you were directing your comments at only one person because I also dont consider it a comedy in any sense whatsoever. Dont tell me to 'keep up'. How old are you again? If anyone ever called me 'son' he'd better have enjoyed his last meal with teeth.
You really are a jumped up little ****. I can guarantee you wouldnt say that to my face so why say it on here? And what jokes thread? Arent you trying to be a journalist or was that someone else? I can ruin a career in one phone call ensuring you never work for anyone in the UK, ever. It's probably worth thinking about that kind of thing.
I was using it as an example whereby people always refer to journalists in the same way: "he said it so it's right". The point remains, why is a film critic - or any critic - more qualified than anyone else to judge something?
