i think most of you fail to realise that while one day guthrie might be "good" i doubt he will ever be top class and we have some of the best young prospects in england...who will never fulfill their potential if Ok/good players are always ahead of them.

imo guthrie hasnt improved since he was at bolton...hes getting older now he needs to step it up, hopefully he proves me wrong, good luck danny.

CM options: Gosling, Vuckic, Nolan, Barton, Tiote, Smith, Cabaye, Abeid, Guthrie and a few other youngsters are coming through. However Abeid is more of a winger and Smith is being sold. Gosling seems to be permanently injured, the new Dyer maybe? And anything could happen in terms of Nolan and Barton. Which leaves Cabaye, Tiote, Guthrie and Vuckic as the most likely to be available for the new season. We can't judge Cabaye yet and Vuckic is still quite young, we keep getting told about his potential but rarely do we get to see it. That leaves Tiote and Guthrie who we know are decent prem players and who we know will defiantly be at the club so I personally would keep Guthrie.

Vuckic and Gosling who we've barely seen play so we don't know how good they actually are. Both incredibly injury prone as well.

As for conceding possession like against West Brom? He wasn't match fit, fell over and apparently got injured? Not like it happens much is it.

If he's still not 'improving' this season then get rid.

Not the greatest fan of the lad as I've seen too many games pass him by and I'd prefer to see what the likes of Vukic can do if given Guthries place and opportunity.

can't understand how we can get rid of anyone since our squad is now smaller than last season. Lets sign before we sell. No lessons been learned from Jan

  7. HE DOESNT NEED TO IMPROVE lads.

He's a squad player, and when ever he's come on, he's done a good job for us. He doesn't need to improve, he's not top quality but neither are many of our players.

He's probably our 4th best CM option.

Who'd be willing to come in as back up and sit on the bench that has premiership experience and would cost about £2m-£3m which is what i'd assume he'd be sold for?
Keep him, look at the last few games of the season if he was gone we'd have struggled to put out a midfield. Was one of our top 5 players in the Championship and was wasted out on the wing under Hughton for a while.

All players should be able to improve their game over time; irrespective of being a squad player or star player.

    You have some strange notions.

I agree with everything else you said, but that might be a bit harsh on Gosling, since he was signed knowing of the surgery, and that's the only injury that kept him out for the season. Until there's a trend of different injuries, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

He came back though! But then went for another 5 months. That's one hell of a setback.

I actually rate Guthrie. He was a key player in our promotion season and played through the pain last season and looked good. With Nolan and Bartons future in doubt, and with Smith a certainty to go, we cant afford to get rid of him. He's a good player and has a good pass on him. More than good enough back up.

Yeah, I know. But still a setback regarding the same injury. It'd be more fair to compare it to the Ben Arfa situation except they were more careful about bringing him back too early. And I'm not going to call HBA injury prone based on that.

But he got injured in March 2010... was training in November... and a year and 3 months after getting injured he's still not returned. I don't count his return as a return as it was for about a minute and wouldn't have aggravated the injury. Returned to training 6 months before the end of the season.

Keep Guthrie, he showed when he got a run of games in CM that he can do a good job, definitely worth hanging onto, especially given the uncertainty surrounding Barton and Nolan.

i agree. what i meant was that if we reach the point where our squad players are at a higher level than guthrie, we can think about selling him. that isn't today. if we lose both barton and nolan it won't be this season. it may be never

He was awful in his first 2/3 starts of the season, but the rest of the time he's impressed me. He may have seemed quite ineffective in his last few games, but he was filling in for Tiote, in the holding role, and he is quite strong in the tackle. Only problem I have is he gives it away in our half too much.

Which is why we ended playing Barton and Raylor (two RWs) there for the last few games

If Nolan and Barton stay, we sign Cabaye and another midfielder then it's probably time for Guthrie to leave (assuming he wants to actually play football) but until then, keep him. He's a good player to have in reserve if not astonishing, good age and good character.
