Brilliant! The Wartersons were hugely underrated - a great musical family. It's a pity that the "re-visited" tour isn't coming round here though.

Did anybody on this board ever go to the Watersons' Folk Club, upstairs in the Bluebell pub, Sunday nights?

I saw Bert Jansch there, twice. <cheers>

We used to go quite often - some great "open mike" nights. Always a great atmosphere and the best thing was the approachability of the various artists. I remember a friend who particularly wanted to get to see Eddie and Finbar Furey but couldn't make it and I asked Eddie and Fin if I could record their set. They were happy to oblige and I sat at the front and recorded the whole night.

I'm sorry lads I can find something to like in most types of music, but folk is ****ing awful. I get they are from Hull but makes no difference its not my cup of tea sorry.

Definitely not everyone's cup of tea. I just think that they are fantastic, versatile musiciians. Norma Waterson and Liza Carthy (her daughter) are both brilliant singers who can turn their hands to many styles of music, some of their jazz/blues style songs are ace.

Is this the Bluebell in Cott? I only discovered The Watersons through Three Day Millionaire which was bandied around on here and I never realised they were so big in the folk scene. Mercury nominated Eliza McCarthy is the daughter of Norma Waterson.

No it's the one in Hull at the back of the market hall (down the passage!) - the folk club was upstairs in a long, thin room above the bar.

Blue Bell was a Camerons pub (now Sam Smith). And Strongarm was one of their brews.

Ah yes - a pint of Strongarm! I was trying to think what it was that we drank at the Bluebell.

What reminded me, GT, was the placard on the wall in the video (as you first see it, before playing). Brilliant vid, by the way - as far as I can tell, it's Louis Street, where they lived. But it's such a dark vid.

[Incidentally, after the Watersons lived there, so did Mike Chapman. Then he and Andru were followed by Stephen 'Snips' Parsons (singer in nothineverappens)]
