A great guy, he was a friend of my aunt's. I met him a few times and had his autograph in an old diary.

I had the pleasure of seeing him play twice, once in his testimonial at St James' , which was pure class, Shack, Puskas, Bobby Charlton all played, and once in a charity game in Thorney Close in Sunderland, when he played against a team made up of one family from the estate called the Robinsons, they had 10 boys and a girl, and she was the centre forward, she couldn't half look after herself as well.
Mike Neville from the BBC was referee, its so long ago I can't remember the rest of the squad but I do remember Jackie Milburn being there.
It was some time in the 60's obviously, just wondered if anyone else can remember it, or what the charity was.
My father used to tell me about Milburn and Shack when I was a kid, he was a Sunderland supporter and his brother who lived in Blakelaw was a Newcastle supporter and they went to Roker one week and St James' the week after, imagine doing that these days ?

Aye.....those were the days when lads wore short pants and fanny was a girl's name.

I can't remember the game you're mentioning but I did play golf a couple of times with Shack back in the early 70's, unfortunately he came across as a bit of knacker. It must be golf that does that to people because Stokoe also struck me as not a particularly nice bloke on the course, thankfully I've still remained a thoroughly decent chap throughout my illustrious golfing career....<laugh>
