http://www.whoscored.com/Blog/q5hf_...ming-Good-at-Southampton#.UlXc4VdPQZJ.twitter It's late, I was bored and I came across this. Good read. It's fair to say we are more direct, powerful and relentless than ever before. DTLW
I note that Mauricio has now had one more PL game with Southampton than Adkins...meaningless no doubt, but just felt weird. The positive effect of MP on the stats is now becoming apparent. At the end of last season the difference wasn't great between the two managers (some unbelievers pointed this out) but now the gap is widening.
Interesting to note that we've scored more under Pochettino than Adkins in the same number of Premier League games......when going by some of the rose tints on here, we were some free scoring, free conceding bonkers team under Nige and haven't scored since the invent of the wheel under Pochettino.....
That is quite peculiar because although we leaked goals under Adkins, we were fairly free scoring too, one still felt. I'll have to find how Poch has managed it.
Yeah, it is because I've just done a count back of the PL games that Saints played under Adkins, and it does indeed come to 30. Unfortunately, unless my Windows calculator has thrown a loop [not entirely impossible] I count 26 and not 36 for Poch. That feels more like it. I'll go back and do a second count, but I think I'm right. EDIT: Yep, 26 goals for it is.
I recounted goals under Pochettino and got 26 too. Adkins was unfortunate that several players were making individual errors defensively under him. Pochettino has been unfortunate that our finishing has been dreadful at times under him.
Not sure where your figures are coming from but NA was in charge for 22 games Poch managed for the remaining 16 games last season and 7 this season, so 23 games. I also get 26 goals. Vin
I think it was more to do with the fact that under MP we weren't consistent scorers. 10 goals against Reading, City, Chelsea and Liverpol but only 9 goals in the other 12 games last season.
Try the link in the post that started this thread..? I'm quite aware Adkins had 22 and Poch has had 23 games. Shall we get Adkins back to even up the games..?
I was commenting on your words "Yeah, it is because I've just done a count back of the PL games that Saints played under Adkins, and it does indeed come to 30" I now realise that you meant goals scored under Adkins. All is well. Vin
The Pochettino style looks very attacking but the most important outcome is a better defence. Possession being as effective as a defensive system as it could be as an offensive one. As more games go by, the points earnt by not letting in goals will increase the gap between the two managers. I note that we have the second best defence this season in Europe!! We have good attacking players, but imagine if we had lethal finishers....the world would be our lobster. However, I do realise that our style forces the opposition ahead of us which does make it harder for the strikers. I suppose we mustn't get ahead of ourselves...we will hit the buffers at some point this season.
Have to say that our style this season looks more sensible than last season to me. Whereas we just pressed pressed pressed against all teams and got hit on the break by defensive teams, we seem to be playing more sensibly this time round with different tactics against different types of opponent. Poch looks to have learnt over the summer and I'm impressed with what I've seen so far.
Pochettino has shown that he is adaptable...as is his system. He has probably assessed the team and realised that the defence need support playing in the Premier League.
Don't get me wrong, i'm a huge MP fan and think it was a genius decision to bring him in but when comparing we have to remember that our start to LY's Premiership campaign was a lot harder than this year's so i would expect us to have let in a lot less goals and scored more.
Funny how that happens. I've seen a few particularly anti-Wanyama people talking as if Cork was a creative genius, scoring and setting them up left, right and center.
