Having watched the official press conference on SAFSEE,our new manager comes across as a very genuine and caring person, with a professional manner, and as someone who is confident in his own ability to bring out the best from his players.I have supported our club since the mid 1960's,and I am confident that we now have a manager in charge that cares and knows what is needed at our club.Welcome to SAFC,Gus...I hope that you are here for many successful years to come!

He and the team need our backing like never before if we are going to succeed..Can't see it happening though by the initial reactions of many of our fans..

We are beginning to look horribly like our deluded unwashed neighbours up the road with unrealistic expectations.

Like the OP says, welcome Gus, and the real Sunderland fans will be behind you all the way (even if that includes a season or two in the championship).

I've said it many times before, which I know annoys the hell out of some, but our lack of home vocal support must affect the teams performance..Our players must feel like they are playing away every home game at times, because the only meaningful singing in the ground these days comes from the away section..

I've been saying this for a while. The atmosphere has been dead for about 3-4 seasons now. I hear what you are saying, but I don't know how the club can expect anything else. It's a disappointment but the team has not given the fans anything to cheer about in years. It has just been false dawn after false dawn and its a little bit like the boy who cried wolf (if you can apply that to the players).

For anyone who was there, the Everton cup match when MON was in charge was a pivotal moment. The atmosphere before that game and just before kick off was like it used to be in the heights of the Reid days. The team proceeded to badly let us down, not by losing, but by losing like cowards. Every time the crowd starts to stir again the team crumbles and we all shut up. Will Poyet be able to win that next game that wins over the fans? All it will take is a win against Newcastle or 3 games won in a row for the crowd to come back on side.

I'll be honest, I'm not much of a singer. I used to sing all the time when I was a kid, but as I got older and understood the game more I am always too engrossed in watching the match and tactics unfold that I don't sing. I cheer them on, but I don't sing any more. I noticed the south west corner didn't even sing against Man Utd.

Surly it's what happens on the pitch that sets the tone of the atmosphere.
I've not been to a game for a while due to where I live but I seem to remember the players were always greeted from the tunnel with huge reception from the fans. Every home goal sent the stands mad. Any prolonged attacking spell had the stands bouncing. It's a shame if thats all changed tbh.
That said it's the players job to excite the crowd IMO and always will be. It would be very odd if level of singing was the same in a relegation year as a successful year.

There's been many a time when you can sense the tension in the crowd, that must transfer onto the pitch as well.

Sitting with my aching face on saturday was the first home game i have watched on sky from the comfort of my arm chair for well over 5 years and i was very interested to hear what could only be described as a minority of fans chanting. My sc is towards the back of the south stand and i could hear them all game trying to get the altidore chant going (dont like that paticular one myself like) but nevertheless they were trying, you could hear the sw and when the 2 sections are in tandem its loud, thing is when people are up for blasting their lungs out they tend to stand and launch into it (stewards)

Sitting restricts your diaphragm, it's basic science that you can't shout as loud from a seated position. Bring in a south stand terrace ffs!

When we moved to the stadium of light I still got the pleasure of Darlington Feethams Tin Shed. At tiny little standing terrace that went back about 12ft and I swear that the atmosphere was better than the Stadium of light even though the attendance was about 44,000 people less because about 600 of a 1200 crowd stood together and bounced and sang their hearts out without restriction. Then Darlo moved to their stadium and I stopped going in protest of George Reynolds.

I think the moral of the story is that you don't need many fans to blow a roof off if the right facilities are in place for them to do it.

Bar Southampton, generally and also 2nd 1/2 against Arsenal, we've not been that bad. We need to keep playing well, get that final ball and start banging goals in.

Starting with the next 2 games please :)

Disagree mate. We just need to adjust our tactics to accommodate Jozy. Don't get me wrong fella soon as fletch is back the better, he's our best striker, but we can't rely on one striker and we don't need too. We can cope fine until fletch is back. I think Gus will see how best to utilise Jozy. Don't think Paolo or Ball had clue what to do with him, playing him as something he's not.

I think he's a good player, he's hit the woodwork twice and had a perfectly good goal disallowed.

It was pointless trying to outsing that droning lot of MU fans. I just wanted someone to switch them off. But don't you think when the lads do give us something to shout about, we respond brilliantly until the next time they let us and themselves down again. Surely our silence/quitness speaks volumes to them. Afterall, should not there huge pay packets be the incentive to give there all and get us singing. We are the ones paying to be entertained.

But he's not a bully mate. We've had a lad come on who's followed his whole career saying it's not his game. From what we've seen he can't bully a little girl. He can shield well and that's the limit of his physical game. Not saying he can't develop his game like, but that will take months of training work to start showing results. He looks tailor made to be in the middle of a front 3 for me, ball into his feet, bring the team as unit further up the pitch into play, pass the ball and put himself in the box. As part of a front 3 he's got Giacc and johnson in close proximity with fullbacks overlapping to provide width and options.

Bally played a front 3 for a large spell against Man U and when Jozy got the ball into his feet it looked the bees knees with Giacc instantly available and looking dangerous. If Johnson makes himself more available than it'll be frightening imo, especially with Gardner lurking around the box.

I 'm not gonna disagree with that but when i mean bully i dont mean kicking people up a height, i mean pulling defenders out of position, keeping them on their toes, doubling up on him therefore creating space for whoever
