Might as well start singing it now then! Champiooonoays, champioooonays, oh eehh oh eehh oh eehh. (Picture me doing that alternating fist pumping thing as well)
If we start genuinely singing the Ramirez song for Osvaldo as well, I'm going to come to the games with earplugs. The most withering aspect is that it's as bad away from home! Always used to be able to look forward to classics such as Southampton Boys are in Town etc now it's just mindnumbing renditions of Seven Nation army with any player whose name fits...the next step is using it for players whose names selfihsly don't fit.... Ooooo Mo-organ Schndierlin (said very quickly)...can see it now!! Also we actually only have player songs for SRL, Ramirez, Fonte (stolen) and, at a stretch, Luuuuke. Think we need more...come on those among us with a semblence of imagination!
Never understand the desire to make up songs for players, when they come & go. What never changes is the club, Southampton. Make up a song for that and it could be sung for decades. Although it takes imagination, style & orginality, so that rules out 92% of the Northam.
And 100% of the away fans. I enjoy individual player songs as it shows affection/appreciation which can drive a player on but nothing beats a good old fashioned Saints song. Just seems like the traditional songs are being replaced by monotonous drivel
In the eighties we Saints fans were renowned for our singing but these days if you want to be a singer you have to semi naked which is a bit hard at a football ground unless you're a hard case in which case you would probably be tone deaf and illiterate.
There is also the unwritten rule that the only people to strip half naked are the very people no one wants to see.
Back in the 70's I think although could have been 80's they did this decibel test to see which fans were the loudest. I believe we won it, although we might have been second. Sorry, not much of a post! But we had some great songs then; "Give it to Ron", "Tom and Gerry on the wings", "If I had the wings of a sparrow", "Molly Malone", "Ooh What" etc etc. Ok, maybe not.
"Aye, aye aye aye, Martin is better than Yashin, Ron Davies is better than Eusebio, And (insert name here) are in for a thrashin'!"
I think its what's it like to be pompey what's it like to be poor you signed Whittingham we sign Pochettino Pochettino
I wish we didn't sing awful tunes as well, the 'genius' lyrics would sound a lot better with some Fields on Anthenry, Hymns and Arias, Jerusalem style anthems, but no, we have Amarillo.
Seeing as there seems to be a paucity of originality in songs of late, why not adapt some of the older ones. After all, even the oldies would put their Thermos flask mugs down and start singing, cause they'd know the words..! I don't know why Saints fans have to appear to be so much in the vanguard, all the time. Plenty of other clubs supporters sing absolutely ancient songs and seem quite happy about it. On the subject of competition, which Lff brought up, about a decade ago, I think, Saints supporters came first in a football crowd singing competition. Unbeknownst to the supporters, I believe, samples was taken of their singing and Saints fans came out with the most in-tune voices, instead of that typical semi-tone or even whole-tone below correct pitch noise that many crowds make.
Ah, you're back (and maybe have been for a while, but it's the first I've seen of you) - hope whatever it was you were doing was good & fun. Nice to see you. Concern was felt!
We're not small, we're one of only about 6 teams to have ever won the top division in consecutive seasons. We were FA cup final regulars during the 1930s. Ancient history you say? Perhaps, but I think it's fair to say the size of the club is not necessarily determined by situation at that particular moment in time but rather the club's long term history. That's why Liverpool are a big club despite having been rubbish for years. Though that song doesn't remotely rhyme.
Oh PL, you are defending your club resolutely, but you really are pushing out the past histories. Portsmouth WERE a big club once, there's no doubt. They're not anymore. Hopefully, they will be again, but these are the days where you keep your head down and don't mention rivalry or status. Not for a while at least. Certainly not on a Saints forum at the moment. Liverpool are a big club despite being rubbish for years because their particular level of rubbish is actually desired by most clubs. That's what keeps their big club status alive when they're not winning things.
