With odds of 1/66 and a lot of bookies suspending betting it looks like done deal.

Sky understands Sunderland expect to appoint Gus Poyet as manager in the next 24 hours.

Former Brighton boss Gus Poyet held talks with Sunderland shortly after Paolo Di Canio was sacked in September.

And his odds to take over at the Stadium of Light were slashed on Monday morning, with Poyet 1/12 to get the job according to Sky Bet.

Kevin Ball was placed in temporary charge of the team following Paolo Di Canio's departure, and has confirmed his interest in being given the job full-time.

But despite a win against Peterborough in the League Cup in his first game in charge, Sunderland have since suffered home defeats to Liverpool and Manchester United in the Premier League.

Speaking in his programme notes ahead of the Manchester United game, Sunderland chairman Ellis Short said that the club's long-term vision had been interrupted by the "necessity" of staying in the Premier League, and said he was determined to make the right appointment.

Ellis Short said: "Unfortunately sometimes the quest for stability can be interrupted by the absolute necessity of staying in the league.

"This is because the long-term aim becomes irrelevant if we aren't at the top level.

"We now have a very important decision to make. Our only consideration in making that decision is what is best for the club. In doing so, we feel the weight of the entire city and beyond, along with the history of this massive football club."

Gus Poyet was suspended by Brighton and Hove Albion following their Championship Play-Off semi-final defeat against Crystal Palace in May 2013, and was sacked by the club in June.

Brighton was his first managerial job, having worked as assistant manager at Swindon Town, Leeds United, and Tottenham Hotspur.

I'm happy enough with this appointment tbh. The bloke seems like he wanted the job more than anyone and is obviously happy to work within the new set up. His football style will suit us eventually and should allow the likes of Giacherinni and Johnson to flourish as he likes flair.

I just hope it's announced sooner rather than later and he can have 2 weeks to work with players and maybe have Fletcher back to choose from as well.

Good luck Gus and you will have a united club behind you.....hopefully?

Not a bad win percentage for an average club…

as Cest said, plays attractive football

At the end of the day, as long as he doesnt slag the players off in the papers I cant see them minding too much

As much as I was pleased with AJ arrived his form since has indicated we bought a pup! My personal survival plan for this season would be to cut our losses and sell Johnson and Wickham in January and with these proceeds (£Xm) added to £10m from Short buy in a really good striker. Giac would play behind the strikers and with good defensive wing-backs Larsson and Jack C, Catts and Craig/Ki in Cm we might start to keep clean sheets and score more than one goal against Premier opposition!

Unfortunately following the flop of Graham, Altiadore although better in his all round play is failing to do what is in his job description..score goals

The big downside to this is that, like PDC this chap has no PL experience.
I can't get away from the fact that if Ellis really wanted him... why not appoint him instead of Di Canio?
He plays really attractive football so it will certainly be an improvement in that area.

Poyet wasn't officially dismissed until June 23rd this year mate. PDC was appointed March 31st.

I'm happy with Poyet and the prospect of playing better football ( hopefully with the muppets we have as players) but this is both a short term and a longer term appointment. Pulis would have been a decent quick fix bit not a good long term one.

Good luck to the lad. Christ knows we need a boost.

Likeable guy by all accounts, so I hope he can make a success of this appointment.

As for the bold bit, how many of your players and more importantly your first team players in particular will be absent for the international period? He'll maybe only have two days to work with some of them before your next game.

I really like Poyet and as an old spurs boy I have a soft spot for him but I still think you are going to struggle this season. I think Poyet might just have enough to keep you up but that's about it. I think you guys just need to give him a chance and not expect miracles like him getting you into the top half of the table because it's just not going to happen.

    Agreed.
Whoever it is and whatever happens this season the new manager cannot be held accountable.
We need at least two years of managerial stability from this point.
