Not such a matter of if but WHEN Smith resigns for Leeds what do you think the reaction from fans will be - what will your reaction be? I for one would describe the feelings of this signing as MIXED to say the least. On one hand a passionate local lad who will give everything for the cause (a return to the Premier League), but on the other hand he is a shadow of the shadow of the player he was when he left us!!!! Thoughts?........................
Whats the big hang up with the scum connection no one complained when we signed strachan with a view to getting us out of the old 2nd division . We need a leader in the Strachan mould to drive the team on to promotion my view is if Smudger can remain injury free and if we can afford him then why not Given bates adversion to paying out money I cannot see any quality premiership players stepping down to repeat what Gordan Strachan achieved with the club . If no one else comes in for Smith then we could get him on the cheap if he wants to finish his recently somewhat blighted carear on a high at his home town club.
I don't get why all the papers etc are calling it a 'suprise' move. Surely we're always going to be the first club linked, whether we're interested or not and after all the talk during the January transfer window? Not reall a 'suprise' now, is it?
He would be the leader both in the dressing room as well as geeing them up on the pitch. If Bates will pay his wages he could be the catalyst to a promotion push next season. He's older yes but has more experience now and we were desperate last year for defensive midfielder who has his class. I for one would love to see him back in the Leeds strip. MOT.
How much do you think his wages would be though? He's on £60,000 and if he wanted to, he could still stay at Newcastle on that for another year.
The Smith debate will roll on and on... its been done to death on 606 and everywhere else Fact 1. he was sold to save the club Fact 2. he did not take his cut of the transfer a considerable amount Fact 3. He is Leeds born and breed fact 4. If he re-signs and delivers on the pitch believe me everyone will love him... Please no more Smith threads!!!!!!
They can't release him without paying him the rest of the contract, unless he agrees to a mutual termination, or finds another club, they'll either have to pay the year in full, or keep him on contract.
I don't see any truth in it. IMO the papers have just jumped on the news Newcastle are letting him go and come up with the first connection.
To be honest, i dont know if he is good enough anymore. But he will be a better DM than killa or BJ that we are letting go so its an improvement in my eyes. Its either Smith or we are going to take a chance on lower league talent. Grayson is really going to have to sell the club to get quality through the door.
Smith was quality in the Championship when Newcastle got promoted 2 seasons ago. Played nearly every game at DM and they won the league. He's good enough, but whether the wages are an issue. But you'd hope he'd rather play for his hometown club rather than earn money he hardly needs anymore.
The next six weeks will be full of rumours of sightings outside various clubs/airports/motorway back rooms ? Newspapers have to sell during the close season and so the roundabout goes on and on. Its best to wait till we see the team photograph for 2011/12.....
Let's hope so. Agree that Smith threads can be tedious and they've been done to death so I'll give my brief list of facts like Spain White and leave it at that: 1. He said the one club he'd never to go was Man U 2. Before any prospective buyers were even known, he told his agent the only club he wanted to leave for was Man U 3. He put two fingers up at Leeds fans 4. He can get better wages elsewhere and it's never going to happen 5. He's always been a Liverpool fan, his Leeds fan rouse was completely fake 6. His transfer didn't single-handedly save the club like people make out I'd react with great disappointment if we signed him. I wouldn't boo or jeer him, I'd obviously celebrate a goal if he scored (unlikely!) but I'd never want to sing his name or applaud his play. Generally I think we should look past our ex-players; I'll be glad in a couple of years' time when they've all retired and we stop being linked with them every summer. I'll listen to Ken at 11 to see what's being said.
I'm sure you mean re-signs, not resigns. I'm not convinced he will come back. I think wages maybe the biggest problem, with age & fitness being issues. That said, I think the initial reaction might not be what he hoped for. But if he delivers & shores up the CM area, all the doubters will be won over.
