Carlos Cuellar has warned Manchester United they will get a shock if they underestimate Sunderland when the two meet in this weekend's Saturday Night Football encounter at the Stadium of Light.

Cuellar was recalled to the Black Cats starting XI by caretaker manager Kevin Ball for last Sunday's 3-1 defeat against Liverpool, which left them bottom of the table with just one point from six matches.

However, despite the loss, the 32-year-old defender believes his side's performance in that game and during training under Ball - who took charge following the sacking of Paolo Di Canio - means they will be no push-over for David Moyes' stuttering champions.

"They (United) have seen our performance against Liverpool and they know if they come thinking it will be easy they will get a surprise," said Cuellar. "We are ready to win. We are working hard to beat them on Saturday."

Cuellar admitted that the atmosphere at the club had improved following the departure of Di Canio and that Ball has the backing of the squad.

"The players keep working hard. We are still worried because we are at the bottom of the table but the main thing is the confidence, which is higher now."

Cuellar has been impressed by the impact Ball has had on the training pitch.

"We are enjoying it," said Cuellar. "It is an intense level. But that work is orientated towards how we want to play.

"You can see in the Liverpool game we played so well and kept the ball for a long time and moved the ball left side or right side to find the space to try and get the ball inside the box. And when we lost the ball we pressed to recover it and that is what we were doing in training.

"With Kevin we are allowed to try things. If you make a mistake or miss the ball, nothing wrong happens, you keep going.

"The confidence the players have with the manager is high. After seeing the performance against Liverpool we have the confidence to think that if we keep that level and keep improving and cutting out mistakes that cost us goals we are going to be good."

Cuellar also suggested the club should extend Ball's tenure as manager until at least the end of the season.

"The club have to make the choice," added the Spaniard. "All I can say is that everyone in the squad and the club are supporting him and believing him from the first day he came up to the first team.

"You can see it straight away in the way he works and tries to make us better. I would like to see him stay until the last game of the season."

Personally starting to think the players have a bet on at who can ridicule the club the most...

Have the players developed PDC syndrome or something?

Can't some on at the club tell them to shut the **** up and start delivering on the field not off it? We are bottom of the league; 1 point in 18; conceded 3 goals in each of the last 4 games; no wins this season and 4 straight defeats.

The prospect of playing us wouldn't scare my 8 year old daughters girls team ffs.

What a ****ing idiot this bloke must be. Who the **** do these ****ers think they are kidding. 'Played well vs Liverpool'. They were ok at best for periods of the game Cattermole and Giacherrini did have good games I'll give him that as for the reat of them do they honestly think we don't know they are a load of ****. Westwood, oshea cuellar, larsson , johnso all championship standard at the very most.

As much as I admire his fighting spirit, which it is hard to knock the guy for but I think Man U have nothing to be afraid about but if they havnt scored by half time they should be worried!

We usually have one backs to the wall 0-0 against a top team during the season and we cling on to that slight hope that this game will be it, thats the reason we love the game, that slight glimmer of hope, pure hope.

I'm sick to the back teeth of our lot jabbering to the press. Pass the ball from left to right? All that knacker can do is boot it long and conceed possession. He's a ****ing football dinosaur (not age, his footballing brain). If Bally gets the job after recalling that heap of **** I'll be gobsmacked.

This is the 3rd player, to my knowledge, who's gone to the media saying how great 'Bally' or 'Kevin' is. If this is a conspiracy to get PDC out and Ball in they're being far from subtle.

And what was the statement from the club about Ball about?

Are they softening the fans up for an 'announcement'?

I remember all that talk of a 'world class manager' since when we have had Fatty, 'shopping at Greggs', and daft old MON.

Seems like decades since Quinn left and now Short looks lost.

The SAFC ones are at least in the club, but the others have more or less went out of their way to get their opinion out

I'd love Ball to be a hero but what a step backwards if they appoint him.

Bally is class but an experienced manager, like MON, let these ****ers run rings round him an
d I could see the same thing happening with Ball. I think it would be a 'Shearer' style of appointment with the same result.

I love Bally but he's gone polar opposite to Paolo and giving the players far too much respect for my liking. Like I've said, I knew something was rotten in Denmark when he dropped Celustka for Gards. No coach in their right mind would drop our pest performer and replace him with an underperforming player who's out of position, without being led into the decision. It doesn't make any sense.

Frightening when you look at those odds, one of those guys is our next manager unless something happens totally out of the blue.

You would be a brave man to bet on Mancini coming still with him at Gala haha
