I think he's also one of those who can either assist people by opening up space off the ball, or provide the pass to the player who then assists the goal. That wouldn't be recorded in any stats, and can only be picked up on from watching the game. I've seen a few Sunderland games in full (against us, Chelsea and City) and he seems to be good at that sort of thing (apart from in the latter of those matches!)

Well that's me convinced. One sunderland fan doesn't rate him, just like all the villa fans don't rate young and a fair lot of our mob think torres is ****e. Whatever makes them sleep at night. When I've seen his play he's been good. He's young and he'll get better. Dread to think what would have happened if the www had existed when shanks and bob were signing players. If kenny thinks he's LFC class then I'm fine with it. The fee is the price you pay for english talent. Add a few more, plus our kids coming through and things are looking up

The English Premium: A 2011 Transfer Price Index Review

by PAUL on JUNE 7, 2011 in NEW ANALYSIS

By Dan Kennett (additional notes by Paul Tomkins)

With the Summer transfer window open, the rumour mill in full swing and clubs quoting eight-figure sums with impunity for English players, it’s time to put some perspective on the figures by looking at some of the fees paid for young English players during the Premier League era.

£15m in today’s prices may still sound a lot, but there’s more money in football than ever before, so who moved for the equivalent of £15m/£20m sums in the past?

    Updated Data

Graeme Riley has recently uprated the Transfer Price Index database so the Current Transfer Purchase Price (CTPP) is 2010/11 values – i.e. all transfers have football inflation taken into account, so that we can make apples with apples comparisons across the Premier League era. (The whole concept is outlined in full detail in Pay As You Play.)

The average price of Premier League purchases rose once in 2010/11 – up 22.1% on the previous season, after a 21.8% downturn the year before, as the recession took hold. The average transfer value for 2010-11 was £4.83 million, only marginally below 2008-09′s all-time high of £5.06 million. At the start of the Premier League, the average price was £594,000, so it’s an almost ten-fold rise in less than two decades.

The more expensive ‘old’ deals seem when applying TPI, the greater the difference between the fee and the average of the day. For example, between 2002 and 2007 the average price of a transfer was around the £2m mark; so someone who cost £20m was ten times the average paid by clubs. Ten times the average in today’s money is almost £50m.

    Big Deal

When we look at English transfers in the Premier League, the same 3 continue to be at the top:

Wayne Rooney to Manchester United in 2004/05, now CTPP £62.6m

Rio Ferdinand to Manchester United in 2002/03, now CTPP £61.6m

Alan Shearer to Newcastle United in 1996/97 now CTPP £50.5m

However it’s fair to see that all 3 were either bona fide prodigies or borderline world-class players. The purpose of this article is to provide a reference point for the current transfer window by looking at The English Premium applied to fringe England internationals moving between English clubs.

Since Andy Cole moving to Man United for £7m in 94/95 (CTPP £33.8m), and having taken into account Rooney, Shearer and Ferdinand, another 21 players in this category have moved for CTPP sums in excess of £20m.

Way out on their own at the top and the only players more then £40m CTPP are:

Shaun Wright Phillips whose move to Chelsea in 05/06 for a scarcely believable £21m translates to £48.8m CTPP
Michael Carrick whose £18.6m in 06/07 translates to £41.2m
Then we see the first of the players who have an unadjusted CTPP because they’ve transferred in the past 12 months

    Andy Carroll’s Torres-fueled £35m transfer to Liverpool
James Milner comes in 10th with his £26m move to Man City
Darren Bent is 15th following his £24m switch to Aston Villa.
Bent is one of four similar English strikers to appear on the list twice, with his £15.5m move to Spurs (CTPP £22.4m) ranked 18th.

Stan Collymore is ranked 6thand 8th
    Chris Sutton 7th and 14th
    Les Ferdinand 11th and 22nd
Other eye-popping figures for centre forwards include:

Emile Heskey to Liverpool in 2000, the £11m fee translating to a huge £32.9m CTPP (almost as much as Andy Carroll)
Kevin Davies ill-fated £7.25m move to Blackburn in 98/99 inflates to £24.1m CTPP
In amongst the plethora of attacking players in the list, there’s also a couple of midfield terriers to use as a benchmark:

Scott Parker’s £10m move to Chelsea in the first Abramovich summer of 03/04 comes in at £25.7m CTPP
Owen Hargreaves luckless £17m switch to Man United in 07/08 is £24.6m CTPP
At the bottom of the list there’s also space for a couple of £20m CTPP defenders

Joleon Lescott’s £22m move to Man City has already been inflated to £28.3m
Glen Johnson’s recent £18m switch to Liverpool rises to £23.1m CTPP
Graeme Le Saux’s £5m deal to Chelsea in 97/98 is £21.5m CTPP
Finally, one topical valuation to finish on is Ashley Young. His 06/07 switch to Villa for £9.65m coverts to £21.4m. With only 12 months left on his contract and a fee of no more than £15m likely, in real terms Villa could find themselves considerably out of pocket.

Signed By Year Player Original Fee £m Age when signed CTPP £m

You might say it works both ways though. We receive slightly inflated fees for our players, we pay slightly inflated fees. So it's basically just trading as usual but + 5 million or whatever it is.

As I've seen mentioned above Henderson was immense for the first half of the season. Then the whole squad dropped dramatically and so went his form. Personally I prefer him on the wing as opposed to in the middle. He'll run and run all day long but doesn't seem to want to tackle a man and instead will just want to hold him off. On the wing he'll skip past defenders and can put in a quality ball.

I'll be sad to see him leave but then again we'll get £20million to spend. If Carroll is worth £35million then Henderson is worth £20million. Crazy money but that's football.

Buying him for 20 million would be one of the worst transfers ever. There are so many more better players that could be spent on.

Better here and now perhaps, but who are any of us to say that the players that you're thinking of will be better or worse than Henderson in 5/6 years?

We already have Raul Meireles who is in his peak years, Gerrard who some may argue is past his peak and Lucas who is approaching his peak years. I'm pretty sure that the better players that you are thinking of are those who are also just appraching their peak years - if they aren't then their future quality is just as difficult to predict as Henderson's

But there are so many players at his age who are miles better than him. He is so average.

    Hi Guys,

Henderson is a QUALITY player with a massive future. I have watched him come through the ranks and he has a lot of ability. The word potential s used a lot and he has bundles of that and you would be getting a player who covers every blade of grass.

Now the price tag. For me it is a great bit of business for both teams. We invested Millions into a new academy a few years back and with the likes of Henderson moving for the sums mentioned this pays for the whole set up making the academy run at a massive profit which no matter what your business is "its all about the money" can only be a good thing. We have a young kid coming through who I feel is a better overall player called Jack Colback remember that name he will be a star.

So you are getting a young hungry quality player for 20 million and the bonus is he's English. The move will be a good one for him and will help us invest in some quality players to help us move forward hopefully like Spurs did when they sold Berbatov.

Good Luck Guys for some reason my Dublin Roots always make me look on a Saturday to see how your lot have done!...<ok>

Eurosport are reporting just now that it's a done deal with David Ngog moving in the opposite direction. The finalisation of it is dependent on both players passing medicals during Wesnesday.

Honestly, 55 million on Andy Carroll and Jordan Henderson, step back and just say that a few times out loud and see if you can keep a straight face.

13 mill for Henderson actually. Which is 48 million. Torres went for 50 million. Truthfully, I prefer it like this than taking Torres instead: 1 goal in over 10 games

Not only that, but 0 assists. He's almost like that sh*t guy who comes on near the end of a Sunday league game because he's paid his subs and the manager wants him to get his money's worth.

I hope Kenny knows what he's doing paying £20m for Henderson. He surely has some good attributes, but I wouldn't say he's the best around which is what Kenny claimed he wanted to buy.

I can only hope that the sum is closer to £12m and Ngog, which would take the sting out of it a little bit. Although I imagine we'll come to next season and Ngog will begin to magically do well for Sunderland.

I find myself in the unusual position of not having any opinion on this guy. I don't recall ever seeing him play so am just having to rely on everyone else's views - which to be pretty honest seem pretty mixed.

There certainly seem to be enough positive opinions on his ability and potential, but I guess only time will tell. A massive welcome and good luck to him - let's hope he settles really well and justifies the faith shown in him.

The one big thing that has made me curious re the transfer is Ngog going in the other direction. I was half expecting him to be moved on, but it leaves me wondering who or if we will be bringing in anyone to replace him.

I am not looking for all the Aguero fans to step forward and tell me he's been spotted at Melwood or anything, but would be interested to hear people's opinions on who we might bring in as our 3rd striker - if anyone!
