The FA have released a special tube map featuring notable ex-players replacing station names. By my reckoning there are 22 names with a Fulham connection (i.e. they have either played for us, managed us or, in the case of two of the names, been employed for a time on our coaching staff.

Quiz time! Anyone care to guess the 21 before looking at the map? Some will be obvious, others far from it. The map includes foreign players who have played in the Premier League, not just English players, and there are some uncapped Englishmen among the list. Here are some clues:

    • Putney Bridge is given to an uncapped, English, Fulham old boy
    • Two current members of the Fulham first team squad are listed
    • Two of our goalkeeping coaches who have no other connection to Fulham are listed
    • One former player for Fulham's ladies team is listed
    • Two recent Fulham players who are still playing professionally are listed

And if you can't be bothered to wrack your brain for a list, here's a link to the map itself. I'll post the comprehensive (I think - I'm happy to be told I've missed someone) list once those who want to play have had a chance. Good luck!

Morning captain, can these people have literally anything to do with football, I.e, they are just good players or have they had to have something to do with London teams.

It seems to be based on England and the English league, rather than London. To give non-Fulham examples, Robbie Fowler and Graham Taylor are both on there. Some of the stations are given to people with a link to that area (including the Putney Bridge one) while others are just shoved in any old where. I was surprised at how many Fulham connections there were.

    Hi Captain,

You're first clue scuppered me straight away - for 'Putney Bridge' I was going to say 'Wayne Bridge' but you say the player is "uncapped". So, help please.

As well as this, is there any kind of play on their name that might associate them with the station? Is the tube line the station is on, relevant?

    Okay, here's my 22:

    From the Captain's clues

Putney Bridge - not a clue (unless it is Wayne Bridge)
Current Players - JAR and Damien Duff (both over 100 caps)
Goalie coaches - Dave Bassett and ‘The Grim Reeper’
    Lady - Rachel Yankey
Recent Players - Mark Schwarzer (again over 100 caps) and ?

Others - on the basis that there is some rationale behind chosing the names and that it is produced by the FA

    England Managers

    - Roy Hodgson
    - Kevin Keegan
    - Bobby Robson
    - Ron Greenwood

    England Internationals

    - Johnny Haynes
    - George Cohen
    - Bobby Moore
    - Rodney Marsh
    - Alan Clarke
    - Ray Wilkins
    - Malcolm McDonald

    Foreign Internationals

    - George Best (Irish)
    - Mark Hughes (Welsh)
(- can't think of any Scots)
    - Moritz Voltz (15,000th premiership goal)
    - Louis Saha (fastest FA Cup goal)
    - Edwin Van Der Saar (most clean sheets)

I cheated and had a look! Really interesting - and a lot of Fulham players etc on it. The most surprising one was a player who played about half a season for us when we went down from the old first division in 1968. His claim to fame was that, as a Crystal Palace player, he was the first player from the old 4th Divison to play for England. Saddly for us, his main position at the Palace must have been next to the pie stall, because instead of "Budgie" he was "Puggie" when he came to us. I saw his debut at the Cottage and I think he was caught offside about a dozen times as the Aston Villa defence always left him behind as they ran out. He must have had one of the tightest Fulham shirts ever!!

On the map, the other thing I chuckled at was that the Metropolitan line is all managers. Typical of the FA was that Brian Clough was the end of the line, almost an afterthought!! Like elephants, they never forget do they!!

Cottager: 18 out of 22. Very impressive. It might be 19 but I don't know who you mean by 'the grim reaper'. Unless I've missed them on the map your wrong answers were Clarke, Duff, and Voltz.

Fred: To my shame, I think you're referring to someone who I haven't included in my list. In which case Cottager's 18 (or 19) is now out of 23 - he's getting worse by the minute!

There are no particular clues in the names of stations. For Putney Bridge, you just need to think of a Fulham player who is English and uncapped. He's not someone I would have guessed, but he played for us in the 80's before moving on to another London club, who played then (and now) in the top division.

The 'grim reaper' was the goalie coach during Roy's days - off the pitch he went around wearing a long leather coat - something Kelly?

Still stumped on Putney Bridge..ah just a minute..Ray Lewington?

Both wrong, I'm afraid, Cottager (although Ray Lew would have been a perfect choice to represent our local tube station). The man concerned played alongside Ray Lew though.

For the keeper coach, think back to the Keegan/Wilkins era and an old playing colleague of Ray Wilkins.

Easy done Captain - he only played a handful of games for us and was gone in 6 months tops. He was one of a long line of has beens we had at the time including Frank Large, Brian Dear and Cliff Jones. In desparation we signed people who had had talent - but seemed to loose it when they joined us and/ or put on a couple of stone. To think we sold Allan Clarke for £100,000 + Frank Large - valued at £50,000 is amazing. In 1968 - the year we went down, we missed out on signing John Toshack - he was as close as being named in the team in the Standard for a mid week game - just because he was at Cardiff and he wanted to go to Tashkent for European game with Cardiff - in the old Cup Winners Cup - for the experience.

    Thanks Captain.

The goalie coach? I've been thinking all along, Peter Bonetti but he's the wrong era to have played with Wilkie and anyway I think he went abroad when he stopped playing. So, not him although being a Putney boy he would have been ideal for the Bridge (ha, ha!). The only person I can think of coaching wise is Gerry Peyton but can't for the life of me see why he'd be in an FA 'famous' list.

Fred's Man? Great 'tubby' clue, so has to be Johnny Byrne. [Don't much like being reminded of 1968 though - it has a ring of history repeating itself in our current state of strife.]

Which takes me to the current player? If it's not Duffers the only ones I can come up with are Hangeland (number of caps) or Berba (well, because he's Berba). Can't decide which though.

Still a couple short and one who I should have inclued in my original list - Alan Mullery??

But that elusive Putney Bridge? Nope, I'll have to get back to you on that one - unless anyone else can chip in first.

Bonetti it is. Him and Wilkins just about overlapped. Berba is the other current player.

Mr Putney Bridge once got sent off (rather harshly, I felt at the time) in an FA Cup semi-final, while playing for someone other than us.

The other ex-Fulham current player is no longer playing in England, though he was in the Premier League last season.

Forgot about that clue - it's not Dempsey is it? I suppose highest scoring Yank and all that!

Still racking my memory for a "worthy" from the 80s for Putney Bridge.

PS Just had another thought - is Jimmy Hill not there? Disgraceful if not!!

    Dempsey: yes.
Jimmy Hill is conspicuous by his absence. I agree with you, I thought that was a major omission.

You seem to be the only one still playing, so say the word when you want to give up on Mr Putney Bridge. Or ask for more clues.

    Never say never.

The one I had from the outset was Les Strong and, other than the Maestro, I can’t think of anyone more fitting for Putney Bridge. But he doesn’t fit any of your clues.

Then there is the deserving Roger Brown or (less so) Big ’Fatty’ Stannard or (definitely deserving) Ivor but they don‘t qualify either. So I’m left with Ray Houghton or Paul Parker (and I’m hoping it’s not that arrogant whatsit!).

Maik Taylor is there, but somehow I left him off my list. Not sure how, because I remember spotting him. Well done, Bidders.

We're still looking for Mr Putney Bridge, who isn't any of Cottager's suggestions. Roger Brown would have been a thoroughly deserving choice, although in terms of his playing days the chosen man was closer than most to big Roger. Literally, he was closer than most when he played.

Ray Houghton is another great should who should have been there somewhere. And personally, I'd have liked Gordon Davies to have got the nod for Putney Bridge.

I think Budgie Byrne was at his best at West Ham, with the 1966 trio - he scrored some cracking goals. Not on the map 'cause he played for FFC.

Thank you Captain, that marrows it down to one ...Tony Gale.

Not a footballer I'd have thought of in the context of this list. Presumably his Sky job had something to do with it.

And there it is! I agree, I would never have thought of him, but they could have done a lot worse for 'our' station. A contender for the best we ever had who never won a cap.
