I'm 34 but I was a junior boxer when I was younger (and only lost 2 bouts, from about 30 ish), so learnt the trade then - I took it back up for fitness only really, but realised I still had the technique, and the coach after a while thought I was good enough to have a bout. I'm fighting people in their early to mid 20's so I don't expect to do well - but the adrenalin in the ring is unbeatable.

I do train hard though as I'm that little bit older - I run everyday, go to the boxing club 3-4 times a week, and have a gym at home that I spend a lot of time in. I often go for 8-10 mile runs at night or early morning before work. So being that little bit older does mean you have to be more dedicated, than the kids - but my fitness levels are high, and I'm pretty well ripped compared to a couple of years ago.

It keeps me focused and out of trouble, so it's good. Mentally and physically I feel so much better for it too <ok>

    Good for you mate <ok>

I wish I had that sort of dedication

Seems I can only be arsed with exercise if im on a football pitch and even then that doesnt seem like exercise as I enjoy it so much

I did boxercise once (when I was getting into kickboxing which lasted about 3 yrs) and I had to go and be sick!

Its very tough just doing boxers exercise let alone being in the ring so fair play to you

The hardest bit about boxing training is the circuits - I've done all kinds of circuits over the years but boxers circuits are ****ing insanely intense. A lot of people throw up after or can't even walk. One guy joined the club a few weeks back, and completed the first circuit (fair play to him) but collapsed and an ambulance had to come, we didn't see him again! We do 2 rounds of circuits a night, and they are ****ing killers....I spar and box with national amateur champions at the club (2 of them) and even they struggle with the circuits...But coach doesn't let you stop, if you do you end up staying behind doing extra!!

My dad used to box in the army and he taught me how to do it when I was a kid. I never really saw the attraction though, once I grew up.
It's hard enough to keep hold of your brain cells as it is without some Neanderthal knocking seven bells out of you.

That's why you've gotta be the one that knocks seven bells out of the other person :)

But being amateur we wear all the head gear etc - so it's reasonably safe. Other than not much protection for the nose or bottom of the jaw, that's why I'm currently working on the uppercut - getting all the power into it using your knees. Bend your knee's all the way down and up, BOOM - hopefully landing a knock out blow! I'm mainly working on this shot currently as the guy I'm fighting is the perfect height for me to land the uppercut, the main problem is it leaves you exposed, so if you **** the shot up, you could be flattened.

It's actually a very tactical sport when you know the in's and out's of it - it's not just a case of going into the ring and throwing punches about till someone wins!!
