EXCLUSIVE: HEIDAR PENS NEW DEAL Posted on: Tue 07 Jun 2011 Icelandic hit-man Heidar Helguson has penned a new contract at Loftus Road. The 33 year-old striker, who scored 13 goals in the R's Championship-winning season last term, has put pen to paper on a new one-year deal for the R's. Speaking exclusively to www.qpr.co.uk, the Rangers number nine expressed his delight at inking a new deal, commenting: "I'm absolutely delighted. Article continues Advertisement "My future lies here. You want to get things sorted out as early as possible and I've been able to do that, which feels good. "I wasn't sure what was going to happen when I came back last season, but I spoke to Neil (Warnock) and he wanted me to stay. "Everybody wants to be wanted and it's nice when a Manager says things like that. "He deserves a lot of credit for the work that he's done here in just over a year." Helguson added: "I was happy with my (goals) return last year and to be able to play a part in winning the league was fantastic. "Promotion is starting to sink in and it feels good - really good! Especially after signing a new deal, which means I can now play a part in next season. "It will be tough, but I think we've got a great chance of doing well." Helguson's form was key in the Hoops' domination of the second tier last season and R's boss Warnock believes the striker's experience will be crucial in the Premier League. "Heidar made a massive contribution last year, and he'll play a big role against for us in the top-flight next season," Warnock told www.qpr.co.uk. "People forget just how many games he played last season - he was exceptional. "It's not just his goals - it's his overall game. "He's a big presence in the dressing room; a steadying influence in both training and on matchdays; and he's a great professional. "He's also got the experience of having played in the Premier League, so I'm delighted we've managed to agree a new deal with him."
Im not surprised with this i thought they may use him as a make weight in any deal for Graham but he deserves a crack at the prem
Although he scored 13 goals, he still misses more than he hits.Still deserves it though, and i love him.
Congratulations to him, for earning himself a new deal. Personally, I don't think he's anywhere near good enough for the PL. But, I've been wrong before, many times come to think of it!
Very glad about this. Helguson was great this season. How many goals did he score and how many did he miss with injury or for other reasons? Not only has he been scoring, he has also had a fantastic presence and has brought down the ball and distributed it really well. Sometimes he's been the absolute engine of the team and I don't think he's always been noticed for it.
Think we must be talking about different Helgusons... Heidar, the one I have in mind, seems an honest enough, salt of the earth kind of guy, very diligent and appreciative BUT as a striker distinctly average and unlikely to worry prem defenders into many mistakes. Also someone on here once observed that HH has very small feet... haven't been able to get that out of me head ever since and keep looking every opportunity I get!!
Good squad player, glad to keep him, but he wasn't the answer to our need for a proven goal scorer up front last season so what chance he will fulfill that role next season?
Icelandic hitman, shouldn't there be an s in front, Ramage as well FFS I am not looking forward to August, laughing stock
Pity he doesn't know where the goal is. If the crossbar was 5 feet higher up he'd hit a half century every season. Played in the Prem a few times before alright and as a result was sold! Still, we need someone to put the cones out every day and distribute the bibs.
Shame to see the disappointed postings about this news A good honest hardworking pro who did well last year (and in comparison to the teams other options up front was bloody amazing!) I know Hulse and Dave hardly count as competition BUT it's only a 1 year contract extension and whilst I don't know his wages I don't think theyre ridiculous Yes we'd all love a massive signing parading the No 9 shirt about before scoring every chance and half chance thats created but realistically it's not gonna happen We all believe it, just check the threads and half are slating the board for being disinterested and unwilling to spend so what's the harm in securing a player like HH for another season? Hopefully a better striker will come in and HH will be sub/squad player and if he's useless in the Prem and we stay up then off he pops at the end of the year with the clubs thanks no harm done If no new goalscorer turns up, either through lack of ambition on the clubs part or any other reason i'll bet we'd all prefer HH to line up at kick off compared to the aforementioned alternatives Rome wasn't built in a day and all that so keeping hold of last years better players in my eyes is a sensible step, even if they move down the pecking order
On a serious note, I think he definitely deserves a shot at it - as a squad player. But if he's gonna lead the line for us next season, God help us.
