David Nugent has said he "badly" wants to stay at Leicester and sign a new contract. He has been superb alongside Jamie Vardy this season and he has now stepped up as an older pro and started to take more responsibility which takes pressure off the younger players. Obviously Nugent will know his new contract will have to be on reduced terms but even then he will still take home a very good wage and we can still offer him more money then any other club. I find it unlikely that a Prem club will take a gamble on him with his wage demands He still has alot to offer us and with Nigel's comments today I think its likely Nugent will get a new deal but it might not be just yet. Lloyd Dyer said last week he wants a new one, David Nugent has now and Wes Morgan said he would welcome talks. We need to get them 3 along with Kasper Schmeichel on new deals before January Dyer's wages will be average championship wages which are easily affordable. I would be prepared to make the other 3 the top earners at the club
... he's going about earning one in the right way currently (as is Dyer) - but I can only see us offering 2 year deals or even one year rolling extensions with an option to renew etc ... will be interesting.
I would offer Morgan and Nugent 3 year deals, Schmeichel a 5 year deal and Dyer a 2 year deal with an option of a 3rd for the club. Of them we must get promoted to keep Kasper so while we in the championship is unlikely he will sign a new deal. But saying that we didnt expect him to be playing for us now
Contracts will prob be based on whether we get promotion or not, i doubt a 3 year contract for Nuge would be feesable if we get promoted, im not saying that he will have no part to play in the prem and would totally deserve a shot at it, but i can see us trying to get better players, look at Cardiff for example, they bought in 5 big signings, so 5 players that got them promoted have already been downgraded to the bench, and i doubt any of them would have gotten new 3 year contracts recently. Morgan and Schmeichel 3 years, Nuge and Dyer 2 years.
Even if we got to the prem I would give Kasper a 5 year deal. I dont think he would want a 5 year deal but from the clubs point of view we want Kasper here aslong as we can keep him
Nuge is not getting any younger and was less than successful in the Prem at what was arguably his prime (age wise) - I can't see anything more than a 2 year deal myself and that depending where we are placed when the negotiations start ...
Nugent's a clever player, he seems to get better with age. He had a lot of expectations on him when he went up to the Premier League which is maybe why he didn't cut it.
This is great news, top player. IMO he is probably the most natural finisher I have personally ever seen wear the shirt, and I include Cottee in that.
Nugent isnt a natural finisher. I would say Andy King is the only natural finisher we have on the books Nugent is better then we gave him credit for. His penalties against Ipswich last season, Wigan and Barnsley prove he is actually a decent finisher
Nugent's finishing in open play is mediocre at best ('natural' he ain't) comparing Nuge favorably to Tony Cottee in terms of finishing is a worrying indictment of the extent of substance abuse in the UK ... as for penalties? I once went three seasons in Leicestershire's then best Sunday league without missing one (then missed two on the bounce LOL) - you SHOULD score from a penalty (think about the logistics) ... but it still takes bottle ... will even take my hat off to Gally for that.
I'd like to know what percentage of Championship penalties are scored. Judging by shootouts, it would be around four out of five, so to have buried all seven we've had so far is pretty good going. I can't remember when we last missed one. Regarding Nugent, he has scored some great goals for us; goals that show he has a good footballing brain. But I wouldn't say he's a natural goalscorer (whatever that is) since he fluffs too many chances. He's more of a CF than a striker anyway (although he'd probably disagree).
IMHO (and as I've always maintained) he's a pretty fair footballer but a very average striker - I actually think he is better playing in the 'hole' behind the strikers ...
Chris Wood missed the past peno when he hit the bar against Blackpool Before that Neil Danns missed against Coventry
