Reina is a big grown up individual. He had a strategic position at Anfield. He said if Barca came calling he'd be off. He can't now complain if our management took him at his word, signed a replacement, and parked him for a season just in case the replacement didn't make it or Barca didn't want to pay a proper fee for him. That's the wy the cookie crumbles Pepe.
This. Anyway, so far so good, Our Keepers playing well and has earned us points that could have been lost. I'm not going to say Reina would or would not have made the same saves as it's impossible to tell. So facts; we play Mignolet and he's done the job we've paid him to do excellently. Reina wanted to leave, just didn't get to go where he wanted to but it seems it's done him good. Has to up his chances of his dream move next year So other than a dodgey way to go about it on both sides everyone is happy. So he's had his say, twice now so can he get on with it like a man now?
Yes he is a big grown up individual and if he was complaining about being loaned out, after saying it would be hard to resist Barcelona, you would have a point but he's complaining about not being told or asked about a move - I think that's fair enough. I remember him running the length of the pitch to celebrate in front of the Kop when N'Gog scored against utd. That's the sort of passion for the club I'd like players to leave with instead of feeling let down by the club, because whatever our individual feelings are about him going, it's not good having ex-players out there speaking of displeasure when a phone-call to ask him about a loan was all it took to avoid.
It's a shame the way he left but the club did what it had to do. Dave and Crumpet have already explained the situation so Reina should not be talking about loyalty. Yes - he's a great with his feet but errors have crept into his game over the past few years, and ultimately cost us a points. Keeper should be saving shots - Mig has done this over the past 6 games and you can argue he has won us points. Being able to pass out and distribute is a bonus for me.
Reina knows that fans love him, and should forget the past and prepare to face Arsenal tomorrow. Liverpool have move on , he should move on also.
But for all his passion he refused to commit at this stage. He flirted with Barcelona for a very long time and for a few months it looked certain that he wanted to go and that Barca would need a replacement for Valdes. It was at that stage that the club needed to prepare for its future. They could wait to see what would happen at the beginning of July to make a decision. That's too late. So they chose to assume he was off and replace him with Mignolet. So he wasn't told he was being loaned? He didn't tell us he was staying either. Then Barca announce Valdes will stay one more year. That means the club has to make a choice. Okay Barcelona doesn't want him yet, but they will next year. Do we put off our plan for one year out of loyalty to a player who put us in this situation in the first place? In a year Migs would be gone somewhere where we couldn't get him. In my opinion its not worth it. At this point Reina shot himself in the foot. He knows he has to leave. He won't be playing. He was given about a week to say his goodbyes, which maybe is the only thing Liverpool did wrong in this situation. As soon as Mignolet was signed Reina should have been told he was to be shipped off. Other than that this whole situation was caused by Reina's refusal to state his intentions.
But some are saying Barca said he was staying before we signed Mings I think we are better with Ming in the team so it doesnt concern me, BR thought we could do better and we have
I think we were negotiating with Sunderland for quite a while, and the wheels were in motion. As others have mentioned, we couldn't sit on our hands and let Reina dictate terms. Rodgers did what was best for the club and thankfully (6 games in mind you), it's paying off.
Oh and then they say Valdes is staying but we were well into getting Ming and then carried on? Good Like I said earlier in this thread, Reina has the ability but what goods that if the will isnt there? Has he been the same since he didnt join Arsenal in 2010? He prob wanted the move but maybe we didnt accept Arsenals offer
He did get complacent and I think not working with Xavi Valero had an impact on his game as well. He has a good relationship with both Valero and Rafa, who are all at Napoli now - has anyone been monitoring his performances? Any improvement?
Saw him play against Milan, looked decent.. Aren't Napoli playing Arsenal this week in the CL, be good to see him do well, he may have phucked up a few times recently, but still think, in the long run, he saved us more points than he cost us. However, I'm chuffed to bits with Mignolet, was a bit dodgy yesterday granted but so far so good..
all i need do is quote form the lfc website on what rodgers said. Its pretty clear to me that we did a hatchet job whether or not you blame pepe for daring to want to leave. people i found ignored utterly the huge increase in form he put in that even rodgers acknowledged with his weight comments etc... In short we are the ones worse off. Mingolet could have done with him being here for the year, he is world class and will win the league in italy... I for one can see that it was all about money and not about players here. Pepe = world class will be for at least 5 years. Mingolet = very very good shot stopper with capacity to improve over the next 5 years. we pushed pepe out due to wages. pure and simple. a shame for sure? in the best interest of the club, maybe. long term harm done... probably not, only time will tell if someone balks at joining us and most likely we'll never know. Results will tell the story.
We wanted to trim the wage bill and get ppl off the high wages whose play didnt warrant the money outlay each week, nothing wrong with that imo. But I do also think (as Carra also said) BR thought we could do better I feel safer with Ming in our goal rather than Reina, he'd improved in form back end of last season but still wasnt the keeper we knew from a couple of yrs ago He'd lost his drive and im afraid its downhill from there, even if his form improved (improved from being not very good at making saves) We disagree on this mito but Ming has been superb for us all season
You're missing the point. I agree about getting a replacement and everything you've said is reasonable but that still doesn't make it alright to go behind his back. Whether he brought the situation on himself or whatever, I would like the club to act with utmost integrity - they didn't.
So BR wanted a new keeper and really thats it. Reina wouldn't have wanted to be on our bench for a season and based on form he would've been Might have made him up his game with serious competition though
