Many countries have multiple time zones. In Russia there are heaps of time zones, and in the days of the Soviet Union (and maybe still, today, for all I know) the railway stations kept Moscow time. So the time in the station in Vladivostok was different to the time outside the station.

Morning all from a brightening bandit country. Good result if not a good performance and a clean sheet yesterday. Had a laugh in the 1881 lounge but we struggled to choose the MOM.

If I recall we used to have lot's of time zones in the Uk, with somewhere like Swindon 20 minutes behind London. It was the introduction of railways that meant the move to one. In The Maldives they have different time zones on different Islands, with some being 30 mins different!

Morning all - good result for you yesterday - Wigan, for some reason, just not clicking into gear despite what looks, from the outside, to be a very strong squad.

Not quite w_y. Before the advent of "railway time" each town used to have its own "local time" - usually based on the position of the sun at midday = 12 o'clock. So the further west you were, the later the local clocks ran. This was not a problem when the fastest way between towns was by horse or stagecoach, but caused chaos when the railways were first built, with travellers frequently missing trains when they departed "early". It was the development of the telegraph and its installation between stations that enabled the railway companies to standardise their time - eventually leading to the establishment of Greenwich Mean Time throughout the UK.

Thanks for tha caramel latte Ak, careful with the extra hours, we have a saying here that you may not have in Iceland - "All work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy!"

Ingólfr Arnarsson and his wife Hallveig may not have been the first settlers in Ísland in the year 874. There is record of Írish monks here earlier, but now an archaeologist has said that there is evidence of Nordic settlement in 720.

Only a few hours, it will finance very little. I will spend the money quickly.

Ash and charcoal. Nature does not produce charcoal as I know and the ash was not a natural fire but one in a house.

Had a downpour here this morning but it's now dry, even if it's still cloudy.

Sorry to enter this discussion a day late, but since I've been living here there's been talk of changing the clocks by half an hour as we're between England and France. I can understand the logic, although as we're nearer France, switching to the same as them might be even more logical. However, the crazy thing is if this went ahead, it's not for the whole of the Channel Islands, it would be unilateral by Jersey!
