When the spot-kick was awarded, there seemed to be a brief conversation between Brady and Graham. Clearly giving it to Brady was the right decision because he scored, but in the greater scheme of things, should it have been given to Graham to try to break his duck and build his confidence? Yes I know given his current form there would have been high probability that he would have skied it, but it could also have been a risk worth taking. Discuss.
Maybe, but I think Brady is the penalty taker & should be left with it. I think it could have been a case of the Carling add for DG, he's maybe not a penalty taker, some people hate the pressure & never take them unless absolutely necessary in shoot outs. I think in '86 or '90 there was a striker that didn't want to take one for England, maybe thinking of '96 though?
Brady has the confidence at the moment. On every free kick and penalty and he's our top scorer. At 0-0 it would always be Brady until he misses one, his penalties haven't actually been that good however. But id wait until a two or more goal lead for us to shift anything round
Didn't Kenwyne Jones do that at Sunderland when he hadn't scored for ages. Think it was Bent that normally took them but he let Jones take one and Bruce was furious afterwards and fined them both even though Jones scored and they won I imagine Bruce isn't someone you want to cross so it was probably a good choice not to let Graham take it!
Brady's goal against Newcastle was created by a good leave by graham who timed his run into the box for Brady to play a square pass. He took the shot on himself and scored, if you look at Graham's reaction with his arms out in front as if to say play me in? Then he just looks at brady without over celebrating when he takes it on himself!
Brady's penalties have worried me. He's concentrated on getting them on target but if the goalkeeper guesses the right way he would save them. He should be practising them more to be getting them in the net even if the goalkeeper goes the right way.
It was fortunate that the goalie went the wrong way otherwise he possibly could have saved it? Since it was not too far off the center line.
I think West Spam had done their home work and noted Brady put the Norwich pen to the goal keepers right, and that is the way Jussi Jääskeläinen went, so Brady this time put it the other side.
When watching on MotD, Brady pointed to himself as soon as the penalty was awarded so I don't think there was any doubt who was taking it.
I can't believe there are several posters on this thread who are seriously questioning the quality of Brady's penalty taking, he's had two and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way both times, what more do you want? Either he's confident enough to wait until he sees the keeper move or maybe he outsmarted Jaaskelainen(sp) on Saturday. I wonder if Brady will have realised that he will have watched his previous penalty and noticed that Brady placed it to the keepers right, so went the other way. We'll just have to wait and see if he can keep it up but I'll certainly be hoping he gets the nod when we get the next one!
There is no reason to change our penalty taker at this time. Brady has 2 from 2 and so should keep the job until he either misses or no longer feels confident to take them.
Brady's tactics on the penalties I've seen him take are to wait until the keeper moves, which 95% of the time is before the ball has been struck.
Agree with all of this. The penalty taker should take the penalties! I don't know if he's reading the 'keeper well or just being plain lucky with his penalties but if you look at yesterday's in particular, the keeper would have saved it without any problem if he'd guessed the right way. It's pretty obvious the point being made; he's scoring them because the keeper fails to save rather than because he's beat the keeper. Watch Rickie Lambert's penalties, when he's taking one it doesn't matter where the keeper goes because he beats him every time. Optimum power and accuracy. As you suggested, it could be that he knows where the keeper is going to go.
Only change it up when you're at least 2 up and one of the goals was a successful penalty & you have a miss-firing striker who didn't score the first pen. Brady's pens are excellent - take a few and you'll see how good he was - he's psyched both keepers...long may it continue - and the brilliant diving too !!! Cool under pressure twice this season...
If Graham earns the penalty himself I see no reason why he shouldnt take it. Until he earns one it really should be Brady that takes them.
As I said - you don't mess with success.. By the way Macca, I don't think Thudd really wants his locks sheared !! Ellewoods - earning a penalty has nowt to do with it.
Seems like a bloody good strategy to me. If you can "con' the goalie into going the wrong way, job done, no ?
