How can being allowed to splash out cash for 20 odd players by using the Jenkinson windfall, be seen as the "same toothpick", when the following season after promotion, the toothpick disappeared..?
To grind on with the analogy, he'd been practicing building sheds for the whole Winter, but only after some guys in blue from South London knock one of his efforts down did he get the knack and build sheds with toothpicks. The reason he's not doing it now is because he is busy walking on wáter and turning wáter into wine. Honestly Volly, last season the only point we looked comfy was in the run in when we even began calculating to see if we could make the play offs.Plus we had Obika who made a bit of a difference. The season before, if you're alluding to that, Powell invested the Jenkinson money very wisely and we won at a canter, running up some huge debts in the process, and if you think it was easy, look at where our then promotion rivals, the Blades, are now! We have more or less a similar squad now as last season. If you want a shed made out of a toothpick, feel free to ask, but logically, get your ass along to a warehouse and buy a decent one if you can afford it and you'll be in for less disappointment in the long run. At the minute, a toothpick is what we have.
Superb analogy, eh? Superb analogies (which it wasn't, by the way) are not going to save us from the drop. The truth is Chris Powell has built this side, and it his responsibility to get the team playing some half-decent football. We have the players to do better, yet he has lost the touch. Bemoan funding all you want, but this season is proving CP to be a busted flush.
The truth is you had trouble understanding my initial clear point, and the analogy is still better than any of the knee jerk reactions & opinions I've heard about this manager & all the other managers you lot asked for....
You fail to address the remainder of my point. Anyway, I have not asked for any other manager. I have asked for Powell to coach his players, and I have asked for Powell to start earning his corn as a manager. Analogies regarding sheds and toothpicks are a lot of bollocks. So please use plain English for simpletons like me, eh? I may not have your intellect, but I can read a concise and cohesive sentence.
I think CP will get us out of trouble, and keep us away from there. Just. I don't think a change in management will make any difference, and I can't think of any real candidates. I always thought this would be a classic second season of struggle. Losing Fuller was a big blow IMO, but we couldn't afford him. Saying all that, CP's contract situation concerns me.
So our downturn in fortune is now down to Powell not coaching..? I now remember why I gave up posting regularly on forums.... You failed to address anything I said & just came back with you "don't understand", so why did you think it was worthwhile sharing your opinion with me regarding a point you didn't grasp..? The toothpick analogy was concise and cohesive, and I knew it would whoosh over the heads knee jerkers....
Its not a knee jerk. Its based on seeing all but two of our games live this season, as well as everyone at the back end of last season. The reason why Jimmy's analogy about the toothpick was fatuous is because it implies that the only tool in a manager's locker is money for signings. Whatever happened to the old notion of a manager improving his players by coaching them on the training pitch ? Takes Rhys Wiggins as an example. Powell was an international full back. Has he noticed that Wiggins looks totally utterly shot this season ? (in the last 15 min v Millwall, he was even struggling to run....). What coaching is he giving RW on defending, holding position, and crossing ? RW has gone backwards at an alarming rate. That has nothing to do with Powell not signing Jonathan Obika. It has a lot to do with the coaching the player is getting.
Because its not all about money. Every club in League One and Two is also skint. Loads of managers get on with it, dispense with the fig leaf, and get some improvement out of the players they have got. A question for you... In the last 4 months, since CP found out he was not getting a new contract and lost interest, have Harriott, Hamer, Pritchard [LOL] and Stephens become better players ? Do we run out looking like a well drilled and organised side ?
Let me put this straight for you: I didn't really understand your point, because it was a load of garbled nonsense. What is your actual point? Why bring up Parky, Pardew, Curbs and Dowie? What the hell have they got to do with anything? Does our team look like it is being coached to its fullest potential by the present incumbent? Is Dyer really an assistant manager, or just a pal to Powell? As for giving up posting on forums: that may not be a bad idea if all you can go on about is the past and toothpick-built sheds.
I don't think anyone can pass judgment on the coaching without knowing what is happening. The coach is Damien Matthew, who did a fantastic job with the under-18's. POTY Chris Solly recently paid tribute to the coaching he has received from CP, said CP had helped him all along the way, so why should he give better advice to Solly than Wiggins, who, I agree has gone backwards? It's not always down to the manager, for example Lisbie was told by Curbs and others repeatedly to practice more with his left foot. He wouldn't do it. I have my own grumbles about the manager's decisions, but for me the problem is one of morale, just as it was under Parky. I don't know whose fault it is, but it's bloody horrible when we have a throw-in and nobody wants to receive the ball. Against Millwall it was obvious Pritchard and Pigott would come off, but they were probably the two players who were putting their heads above the parapet. I was probably the only one who wouldn't have taken Pig off, because for the last 5 minutes he seemed to shake off his nerves and start playing his normal game. The question for CP is do you believe that you can work under the club's financial restraints? He really needs to believe he can.
It's not about financial restraints FHB it's about pride and style. Every team in this divison is under financial restraint and given that our budget and outlay are mid table, that is where I believe we should be. The problems are not, repeat not with the board. They are with the manager and the team. We have no pride in our performances and no style in our play. We have played cack for 18 months at home, bar one or two performances, and that is the teams fault, and those that send them onto the pitch. Once again those that have a vested interest in seeing this board fail, are trying to blame them for all this crap. Quite frankly if I invested millions into this club and the rubbish I have witnessed at home for a season and a half I couldn't bring myself to attend either. If anyone wants to find an investor for this club then please step forward. I think the queue is shorter than a holiday to Syria.
Spoke to a fellow supporter today who knows an ex Charlton player who now works for Sky In his words, Charlton have now got quite a reputation within "the football industry" for being a club that people shouldn't be in a hurry to join. The specific reasons given by the ex player were alleged late wages, and having highly dysfunctional owners. Football is a small village, and word soon gets out. People may pooh pooh this anecdote, but that is what I was told. Message me if you want more info
It has to do with the point which for some reason you had trouble grasping... The "Sack the manager" merchants got their wish, they got their shiny new managers, including Reed which you forgot to include, and all of them improved what exactly..?
I don't buy that. If it were the case why would Solly want to sign an extended contract, same with Evina.
It's not the only tool, but it carries more weight than half the nonsense that is spouted by people who blame everything on the manager, and you know they've totally lost the plot when they start on the assistant manager.... Flaming heck the Mervyn Day syndrome is still fresh in my mind after all these years...
Solly signed one so in Jan we can flog him for my imo...cynical as anything that but that's what I think.
