Tottenham come into the game in 2nd place in the table on 13 points with West Ham in 16th place on 5 points. This will be the 242nd time the two clubs have met. The first meeting came in the Thames and Medway League in September 1898 when West Ham were known as Thames Ironworks. That game at Northumberland Park resulted in a 3-0 home win for Spurs. Thames Ironworks won the return fixture 2-1 at the Memorial Grounds in East Ham. The teams met again in the Southern League the next season with Spurs running out 7-0 winners at Northumberland Park and the return fixture ending in a 0-0 draw at the Memorial Grounds. The 1900-01 season saw Thames Ironworks become West Ham United and the Hammers and Spurs played each other in both the Southern League and the Western League. By now, Spurs had moved into their new ground at White Hart Lane but it would be another four years before West Ham moved to their current home at Upton Park (or more correctly, the Boleyn Ground). Spurs won three of the four matches played that season against West Ham with the remaining game being drawn. Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United continued to meet in both Leagues up to season 1907-08, when Spurs switched to the Football League. The teams didn't play any more competitive matches against each other until after the First World War. During the War, several games were played in the various competitions organised to maintain the morale of the public. Spurs beat West Ham 3-0 in the first FA Cup match played between the teams in February 1920. To date, the clubs have played against each other together 11 times in the competition with Spurs winning 6 games to West Ham's 3 and 2 drawn games. The first Football League meetings came in the Second Division in season 1919-20 with West Ham winning 2-1 at Upton Park and Spurs winning 2-0 at White Hart Lane. Spurs regained their top flight status that season, which had been taken away in very contraversial circumstances. Spurs and West Ham played their first match in the Top Flight of English Football in February 1924 with the Hammers drawing 0-0 at the Lane but winning the return leg at Upton Park 1-0. The clubs met for another four seasons in Division One from 1924-25 to 1927-28. From 1932-33 until the outbreak of World War Two, the clubs met in the Second Division. During the Second World War, Spurs and West Ham played 20 games which often featured 'guest players' as many of the club's regular footballers were called away on National Service. Regular football resumed in season 1946-47 and the teams played four seasons in Division Two before Spurs won the title in 1949-50 and were promoted to Division One, where they won the first of their two League Championships the next season. West Ham United were themselves promoted to the First Division for the 1959-60 season and they enjoyed a lengthy spell in the Top Flight which lasted until 1978. West Ham United beat Spurs in the first Football League Cup meeting in 1966 and to date the clubs have met 7 times in the competition with Spurs winning three games, West Ham two games and two games drawn. Spurs were founder-members of the Premier League in season 1992-93 and have been ever present in the competition. West Ham won promotion to the Premier League for the 1993-94 season and lost to Spurs 3-1 at Upton Park that season. The Hammers beat Spurs 4-1 in the return match at the Lane. West Ham won the 2010-11 match in September at Upton Park 1-0 with a Frederic Piquionne goal while the game at White Hart Lane in March 2011 finished in a goalless draw. The Hammers were relegated at the end of that season finishing bottom on 33 points. The match at White Hart Lane in November 2012 resulted in a 3-1 win for Spurs with Jermain Defoe scoring just before half-time and adding a second after 64 minutes after Gareth Bale had put Spurs 2-0 ahead after 58 minutes. The Hamers goal came from on-loan Andy Carroll. The game at Upton Park in February 2013 was won 3-2 by Spurs. Gareth Bale put Spurs ahead after 13 minutes but an Andy Carroll penalty levelled things up after 25 minutes. Joe Cole put the Hammers ahead after 58 minutes before Gylfi Sigurdsson scored the equaliser after 76 minutes. THe game looked like ending as a draw until Bale scored a second stunning 90th minute goal. To date, there have been 34 matches played in the Premier League with Spurs winning 17, West Ham winning 10 and 7 matches drawn. The clubs have met in two foreign venues, firstly on tour in the United States in May 1969 where Spurs beat West Ham 2-1 in Baltimore, USA and more recently in the Barclays Asia Trophy in July 2009 in Beijing, China with Spurs winning 1-0. Overall, Tottenham Hotspur have won 100 games, West Ham United have won 81 games and the remaining 60 games have been drawn. please log in to view this image Full History of Tottenham Hotspur v West Ham United Matches 1898-2013 please log in to view this image They Played for Spurs & West Ham.... Funny as we tend to meet the spammers at home when they look a shambles and we need a win to regain some confidence. Although if their away game against the saints is anything to go by they will park the bus, so ill like to see Lamela,Eriksen and possibly Holtby all start as our wingers wont get much space in behind and we will need to pass the ball well and unlock their defence.
We're 2nd in the league, I wouldn't say we need a win in particular. With us struggling for league goals I am a bit worried we'll draw 0-0, taking into account we have to go to Russia midweek and Allardyce always sets up to avoid defeat first.
We may be 2nd but in the two big games we didn't really perform, unless we look at short spells and for all our points as you say we're struggling for league goals so I definitely think we need a win in style and pass the ball better and stop shooting on sight, as then we may see Soldado find form.
Chelsea, Anzhi and Wet Spam in the space of a week. Is it possible to have a set of three games with a worse triumvirate of fans?
That is assuming Soldado is selected. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Defoe play on Thursday, bang in a couple and be selected ahead of Soldado next weekend.
We seem to be scoring better in the cup and EL than in the league Spurcat so whether JD would score in the league after two in the EL is open to speculation. I'd still persist with Bobby because over the course of the season I feel he'd be more consistent than Defoe.
That's different though, I don't think we're in need of the 3 points or low in confidence. If we lost to West Ham then that would probably be the case but at the moment, I don't think we're short of wins or confidence in our team, manager or fans(except you ). I think this is going to be one of those occasions where we completely disagree because I think it's been a very good start to the season. We can't expect to win every game but when you look at the table and the teams we've played, it's no real shock that in the 2 games we've failed to win, we've not played them off the park because they're up there with us as the sides who have put together the best starts. I don't think it's realistic to expect anymore. Had we played City and United I think we should be disappointed as they've shown they're really vulnerable at the moment.
I am sure you're right Thor, but I saw Boss suggest last evening that Soldado might need to be left out, and the idea has been growing with me. It would be a big call to leave a recent £26m signing out of the side, but I wouldn't rule it out if Defoe does well on Thursday.
I would change it round and start Defoe in the P/L and Bobby in the E/L,if he can score a few in that it,should give his confidence a boost
I don't think we can leave him out because then he wouldn't get the match time he needs to score. I can't see the point of dropping him to the reserves where he MIGHT get his scoring touch back and then play him in the first team again in the hope he'll find the net because he's been left out and is indignant because of it. I see where you and Boss are coming from believe me I see your view but I don't think it will be long before he performs.
Our famous disagreements LOL The confidence bit came out wrong, I never meant overall, more our scoring and Soldado, but I have had concerns about us getting ahead of ourselves over being 2nd as when you're 2nd but fail to perform against the top teams then it can cause players to feel like they where outclassed so to win a game after I feel is important if we have serious ambitions. But of course we're not the finished article so still time for areas to improve, but I also want to see Lamela , Eriksen and Sandro start, especially if were sticking with Soldado.
Thor we know you would do anything to keep Defoe out the side! But yes I do feel soldado coming off the bench would help him but as I posted above, if we're sticking with Soldado we definitely need players like Lamela, Eriksen, Sandro and holtby.
Chelsea was a bit too big of a game to be worrying about being fair but I'd agree with him starting against West Ham. If Soldado came to us expecting to be automatic first choice regardless of form then I think he's joined the wrong club and that should be the same with all our players. Personally, despite having been against signing him orignally, I'm a bit of an apologist for him. Had he played as many Europa League games as Defoe I think he'd have scored a similar amount and I do think he's done alright considering the lack of chances he's been given. On the otherhand Defoe and other players need to feel that they aren't just considered "Europa League players" that only play leage matches when there are injuries, their performances are taken into account. He, like Holtby and many others should feel like what they do on the pitch matters and this is most important for me, it's easy to say "oh it was only Tromso and a weak Villa side" but they can only play who's put infront of them. It's a shame we're away against Anzhi as I think that'd have been a good opportunity to try the 2 of them playing together. we don't try and play on the left wing anyway so maybe giving Defoe a chance on the left it may suit him as it would give him plenty of chances to get his head down and shoot, which is what he loves. Then again that would involve dropping Sigurdsson which would be unfair as he's scoring goals at the moment.
Yeah I want to see more too but as I said before I didn't really expect to see everything click straight away. I'm happy enough in the short term for us to get the results without playing that brilliantly, or similarly if we were playing well but not getting the results. Things are changeable so early on, Norwich fans will be calling for Hughton to be sacked one week and will be happy for him to stay the next. Hull were considered relegation fodder early on but are thought of as possible dark horses now. It's natural for fans to want to react to results of performances but whilst I still have my opinions I'm not going to judge too harshly or get too carried away until I've seen this side fully settled. We've spent a lot on new attackers, in particular, and if we're still playing like this in 6 months I'll be disappointed and I don't think AVB will have any excuses if that's the case but for the time being so long as we're in the mix for top 4 then I won't mind, regardless of the performances.
Not sure why you keep mentioning Eriksen starting, Boss. He has been. Sandro and Holtby are being eased back in after injuries, in my opinion, and Lamela's getting the same introduction that Lloris got in the last campaign. I can see them all starting on Thursday and being on the bench for this game. Makes sense to me.
Cheers for that pnp but I did notice Eriksen has Been starting! I mention his name for the type of player he is, mainly making the point we need inventive players who can pass the ball, rather then shoot on sight players if we want to see the best from Soldado. I mean its no good just having Eriksen, we need better passers of the ball overall.
