    Hi guys,

Just thought I'd post this up here so you know which papers to look at regarding transfer rumours. Of course, the S*n should be off-limits anyway.

Some of you may already be aware of these, but the accuracies are as follows:

Guardian Sport 33.3% accurate. 180 right from 541 rumours.
The Times 27.1% accurate. 278 right from 1026 rumours.
The Independent 27.1% accurate. 153 right from 565 rumours.
Telegraph News 23.7% accurate. 121 right from 511 rumours.

    The worst accuracies are:

The People, The News of the World, Mirror and the Mail.
Sorry, no stats from these, but I expect they're below 20%.

Anyway, now you know where to look for your rumours.

I agree with one of the above posters. Will only believe it when I see it on the Liverpool website.

However, I do enjoy seeing some of the rumours. Some of them are hilarious. <ok>

I do enjoy a good rumor or two. One I wanted to come true so bad was back in 07-08 maybe? or year before we were heavily linked with Aimar, and he was and still is one of my favorite players, not sure why but maybe his River days and his first year at valencia he was just awesome! never wanted a player to actually be in the helicopter landing at Melwood so bad in my life!

I remember we were linked with Baraja, Aimar, Ayala, Vicente and Albelda when Rafa first joined and we got Xabi Alonso and Luis Garcia instead. I was gutted...

They warmed up to me quick and Alonso is one of my favorite players now. But Aimar and Vicente in particular I was really excited about. Ayala is like Hyypia for me in he is just a commanding CB and teams that have lost these players have not been the same since...

Not being funny but where did you get those stats from because in terms of rumours 1 in 3 is a massive success rate.

Imagine if liverpool had bought 1 in 3 of the people we have been liked to over the last two years, the squad would be huge!

I think it's in relation to actual articles that say we're ACTUALLY in negotiations etc (like the current Guardian one on Henderson). Most articles on transfers are just that we've enquired about someone or we're interested, that way it's impossible to tell if it's accurate, since if the signing doesn't go ahead then the paper will claim they only said we enquired, not that we were actually gonna buy the player.

Yeah, that's right. The Guardian, Times etc. don't really have 'gossip' columns. They just report on a link with a player when it's somewhat more established and there's more to the story than a scout simply being spotted in the stadium.

Even if the figure was 33% that still means they get twice as much wrong as they do right.

All the papers just make up the stories as they see fit.

Not always. These stats only reflect the players we actually sign, so we may well be interested in someone who they report we are, but if the deal doesn't come off for whatever reason then it affects their accuracy. For example, we're interested in Ashley Young, but if he goes to Man Utd, in statistical terms any paper reporting the likelihood of his signing for us is 'wrong'. Of course, many of the tabloid papers such as the Mirror and Mail link us to players we're not even close to interested in.

I had watched Xabi Alonso when he played for Sociedad so I was really pleased that we'd signed him. Luis Garcia was the one I was gutted about as I saw him as little more than a Barca reject.

As for transfer rumours, I remember how when we were selling Owen, we wanted to buy Eto'o but he had already agreed his move to Barca. That really pissed me off because if Owen had announced his intention to leave earlier we, for all anyone knows, could have nabbed Eto'o

    Eto'o.
Rumour has it that Rafa when he first arrived actually tried to pull the plug on the Djbrill Cisse deal and instead wanted to sign Eto'o from Real Mallorca, there was a bit of a mix up however as Real Madrid owned half of Eto'o.And Rafa wanted to use Owen as a ploy to get Real Madrid to do business. However The Cisse deal was almost done, and Rafa couldn't do anything about it as it was Houllier before he left that sanctioned it,and Parry was the one that completed it.The Eto'o deal fell by the way-side.

The broadsheets in this country are no better than the red tops, they just use bigger words to appeal to a different market.

Those figures will also be spread across the league, or leagues. London-based journos will obviously get more London club news. I imagine James Lawton at the Independent is always sucking up to Utd's press office. He does in his articles.

The Mirror seems to have a good few Liverpool fans on its staff so I'd expect them to do well with us. Dunno how close they are, though.

Wrong, the tabloids are fixated on different things and dumb down their content.
