Dozens of Nepalese migrant labourers have died in Qatar in recent weeks and thousands more are enduring appalling labour abuses, a Guardian investigation has found, raising serious questions about Qatar's preparations to host the 2022 World Cup. http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/sep/25/revealed-qatars-world-cup-slaves
After the stupid Qatar 'Summer' timing of the 2022 World Cup - now comes another huge screw-up! http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/24282713 http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/fo...preparations-for-2022-World-Cup-in-Qatar.html http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/sep/25/revealed-qatars-world-cup-slaves
What an absolute ****-up this World Cup hosting award has been! Are there going to be any countries' FAs brave enough to form a pact and break away from the corrupt association that is FIFA? Then again half of them are probably in bed with them and taking backhanders to start with.
Presumably you said that because earlier I said your Thatcher avatar wasn't a great idea on a football forum. You felt the need to hit back? I'm sure you care about the dead bodies being sent home from Qatar really.
Are they British residents? If they're not its not really any of my business. Too many bleeding heart liberals trying to save the world already for my liking
International pressure on Qatar to prevent exploitation of migrant workers in the buildup to the 2022 football World Cup escalated on Wednesday as victims' groups and the United Nations urged the game's governing body to act to halt a death toll that is already in the hundreds. http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/oct/02/qatar-workers-deaths-fifa-world-cup-2022
This really is outrageous, I can't believe there's not more outrage about it. It's a game, it shouldn't cost anyone their life, whether they're playing, officiating, coaching, spectating or building venues. They're being urged to sort out the death toll? There shouldn't have been one to begin with. It should have been stripped off them already no matter how much they paid bladder and the other FIFA officials to get it.
They haven't actually started building the stadiums yet, these deaths relate to other building projects in Qatar. It is appalling though and everyone involved in voting for this bid should never be allowed to vote again.
I think a lot of the construction already taking place is World Cup related - things like hotels, roads, shopping centres.
Hard to know which is more depressing - the shocking behaviour of the ridiculously rich Qataris (who could easily afford to pay a sensible wage to these workers), or the fact that there are people like Suited in the world.
The investments of this slave using country have money in shell oil and the french football team PSG. I suggest supporters of football stop buying shell oil products in protest.
