I know Enrique lost Hernandez which is the real error but I don't know what Lucas and Gerrard were doing, they both were past the near post and seemed to try and swap as the corner was taken. I'd like us to try the way United attacked that corner though. Having 3 big players lining up at the edge of the box(towards the far post) is a big distraction to the defenders and if the opposition go man to man the defenders end up running towards their own goal where it's easy for them to get blocked off and lose their man and difficult to clear if they do get to the ball first.
Marking zones instead of players, hansen used to have a field day with that on MOTD, but its come on since then and you forget its pretty much the set way of defending.
Zonal marking at corners, a bit like playing a high defensive line, is just so obvious when it doesn't work which makes it easy fodder for the pundits. The likes of Hansen, instead of attacking the poor execution of the plan will always blame the plan itself and trot out some basic rule of defending from their days which isn't relevant anymore. Get touch tight. When in doubt, kick it out. And so on...
As a keeper, I am not a big fan of zonal marking. But I would always want a defender to position himself in front of the near post defending the "Sheringham corner", which is zonal. When a froward sees that positioning, he more often backs away and prefers to make a move from the far post area, thereby making himself liable to be picked up by two players instead of one.
Intresting view from a keeper, keepers tend to view the situation differently as your spending the entire game viewing whats in front and how players are moving, or leaving gaps for the opposition to exploit. One of the troubles with near post defending is unless the player is strict, they can't help themselves in straying or they tend to stand there like a plank of wood (and their reactions are slow), i guess thats why sheringham thought of that corner in the first instance, but yeah defences became wise to it so it lost its effectiveness.
Nah I think I'll be happier when Lawro's gone though. I don't mind him making an idiot out of himself saying Liverpool are the only outstanding team in the league and that their run can go on for a long time yet, right before they lose to Southampton. But what irks me is we're all bloody paying him for it
Not sure if this has been mentioned but look at the goons line up and subs 21 Fabianski 04 Mertesacker 05 Vermaelen Booked 17 Monreal Booked 25 Jenkinson 08 Arteta 31 Miyaichi 44 Gnabry 45 Isaac Hayden Booked 23 Bendtner 42 Eisfeld Substitutes 13 Viviano 40 Bellerin 20 Flamini 53 Kris Olsson 60 Alex Iwobi 30 Park Chu-Young 37 Akpom I take it these are kids that wenger has no choice but to use, rather then stars of the future.
What? Didn't Swansea win the League Cup? It doesn't seem like five minutes since.....Toshack, Leighton James (RIP), jumpers for goalposts...
Pleased with that draw. Hull are a good side so it'll be a good opportunity for some that aren't in the first 11 to prove themselves against a difficult side. As much as I want us to progress I just don't think playing a side a division or 2 down would be as beneficial.
