i'm afraid john cross has long had an axe to grind with norwich - i understand its because it's 'not a nice drive'. <doh>

but this is more to do with hughton. no idea why - oh, that's right - he's a gooner!

didn't mccarthy come out and say the job was basically o'neill's? makes you wonder how he knew that without enquiring himself... <whistle>

Calm down girls! All I said was that the ROI job is vacant and if Whotun was to get the elbow, after you lose to Stoke at the weekend, this will give him the perfect opportunity for him to regain some much needed credibility!

has he really lost credibility though? maybe with a few of our fans but to everyone else in football the general consensus remains that he's doing ok but needs to up his game a bit

I've just been reminded of a particular instance in my Father's life, he stated quite categorically that he hated Stilton cheese! My mother asked him if he'd ever tried it, to which he replied, "No and I'm not bloody well going to!"

He couldn't see what we were laughing at, but that is just the mentality of the Hughton outers, they are determined not to give him a chance!

the way i look at it is the result last night only puts more pressure on him, because now he will be expected to learn from that and take it on to sunday, if he went back to anti-football ways against stoke and not taken anything onboard then the middle grounders would more than likely turn against him.

sorry guru but that is an unbelievably daft thing to post.

battling back to win a game of football from two goals down, an out of form side who are on the back of two straight defeats, when the pressure is building on you... he goes and makes three game-changing and inspiring substitutions and you think winning that all heaps more pressure on him?

    bizarre!

he hasn't played anti-football (as you call it) at any point during this season - it's a complete myth. he's been positive in his team selections - too positive on occasions - but i assume that because we have failed to score too often you think you're right? he has been let down by his players this season. last season there was much to work on but he's made adjustments this season to the style and even carrabuh has noticed! his subs have been better timed so far with more attacking intent. last nights result won't change much in the long run because the cup is not a priority and if we lose at stoke he will quickly be under yet more pressure (unnecessary pressure imo, as you know) but how can winning a game be a bad thing when what we ALL needed was a big boost and a bit of luck?

if we get a little more luck tonight, get a nice home tie (i fancy us to beat anyone at home) then we are 90 minutes away from another league cup quarter final. a good, positive performance away to stoke, maybe even three points and all of a sudden we are looking at a different season. it is far, far too early for this kind of pressure to be placed on the manager. if the league results continue to stutter through to christmas then he will rightly be in trouble but it is still september for goodness sake - last night was the first time hooper has been fit enough to start!

I entirely agree with you Dave, I hope that Hughton is given plenty more time.

But do you think he would give Murphy a go in the league? do you think he will go with Hooper and Wolfswilly together?

This is what i am saying, to me he seems to have an complex about not taking risks in a premier league match. he took risks last night and they worked, would he do the say in the league?

I find that stat really amazing to be honest <ok> Only 2 wins over the last 4 months of the season and you still managed to achieve your highest position in 20 years! Does this also go to show how poor the teams around you were?

in all honesty, yes - it does!

take out the top 7 teams from last season and it was a very poor league and still is, although i think the overall standard has been raised slightly this season, as you'd expect when teams such as norwich, saints and cardiff all spend £20m plus. everyone below the top 7 is much of a muchness and will all beat each other. its almost like there are two 'mini-championships' developing within the premier league, where its extremely competitive at the top and bottom but not between the two

I remember listening to 606 on 5 Live towards the end of the season when you had lost at home and the bile and vitriol that was being spouted about Hughton was pretty bad. This was before the WBA game that you won to secure your Prem status. Can he really win over these people?

well having seen a lot of the murphy boys i would suggest josh, who scored a worldy last night, is not as far down the line in terms of development as redmond so i would expect him to feature occasionally from the bench this season and probably go out on loan to a league one or championship team once elliott bennett is fit again after christmas. yes he did well last night but he came up against a tired defence and had absolutely no pressure on him at all - it will be different in the premier league. hughton has a good record at managing youngsters so he needs to be eased in gently - same applies to the other kids who are starting to knock on the first team door. will he play hooper and wolfswinkel together>? only he can answer that - he did at the weekend when hooper came on. i personally wouldn't start them both together because i think we need an extra body in midfield but he may feel differently and as i say, hughton has been very positive in his team selection so far this season. he's been taking risks for a while, especially in terms of formation, but its often not worked out. we actually perform better when he sticks to his tried and tested, 4-2-3-1 and i for one hope he returns to it at the weekend.

i wrote a thread about it the other day warky:

    http://www.not606.com/showthread.php/230367-Resigned

i think the reaction of a section of the crowd the other day mean its a long way back for him. its all a bit pathetic and based on very flimsy reasons but once a manager gets booed during home games - even when making perfectly correct decisions - it only ever tends to end in one way. having said that, if we can win at stoke - hardly out of the realms of possibility - and perform well against both arsenal and chelsea (we should have done the double over arsenal last season and matched chelsea at carrow road so again, hardly impossible) then maybe, just maybe some of the boo-boys will sit up and realise that they may have been a bit hasty. hughton deserves to be under a little bit of pressure because we weren't as good as we could and perhaps should have been last season and haven't started quite as well as was hoped this season, but he has been put under extra, unnecessary pressure by our own fans who are being too demanding. they've hit the 'self-destruct' button and i'm just hoping there is another button marked 'cancel' just around the corner so we can get back on track. we don't help ourselves sometimes... who the hell they think could do a better job is beyond me and it seems, beyond them too!

We actually got four wins in the last four months of the season, but yes that is quite amazing, though just goes to show how unbelievably strong that run up to Christmas was.
