I'm into the site now - this game was played 4 days after my Dad's 17th birthday - I wonder if he attended this game with his Dad as a treat? I note that a photo is referenced in the article, but I don't see it - do I have to go somewhere else? Hi Bushman, Great stuff, on the home computer I'm seeing the images, that I couldn't (perhaps blocked) at work - I still had to open an account bto view the content. I wouldn't be surprised if my Dad & Grandad were at that game together - I'll imagine they were, although if it were a weekday fixture my grandad would have had to take some time off work in the City (he worked in a stockbrokers office). They lived on Bradiston Rd, later just around the corner on Fernhead Rd, both livelong R's.

One observation - looking at some of the Austrian player names on the teamsheet, a few seem possibly Jewish, and you wonder how many of them were rounded up and persecuted in WWII Vienna? Similarly, how many of our lads on the teamsheet made it through the war? My Dad joined up before the official declaration of war, when he saw it was inevitable, in the 3rd County of London Yeomanry, known as the Sharpshooters. My Grandfather was in the RE's in WWI. My Dad, born 1916, was named Victor for victory and my Grandfather away in France carried a French franc, dated 1916, in his pocket for good luck in WWI, which my Dad also carried through WWII and I now have on my keychain. You and I must be of the same generation - I turn 60 in December and would love to make it back across the pond to an R's game again.
That's a great story, Kilburn. Thanks for sharing it. I love the articles on this board which share our band of posters' connections to the two wars etc. I bet that to you that solitary franc is absolutely priceless and I hope is equally valued as highly by future generations of your kin.
