Back in them days you would never see Barcelona or Real Madrid in the same competition AC Milan, Juventus or Inter Milan facing one another in the semi finals. The places were filled up by mainly Champions of countries like Belgium, Switzerland or Sweden where the facilities were nothing like they are compared with the English, Italian and German sides. The players of these teams were not always full professionals.

Back in the day it was 2 legged knockout the whole way through wasn't it? Now you get 6 games to get out of your group, with perhaps 1 half decent team and 2 minnows filling up the group. If you lose 2 maybe even 3 games in the group you can still qualify, also it was only the champions in the competition then so i dont agree with your opinion.

More often than not the team you would play in the knockout rounds would be minnows. Very rarely when Liverpool won a European Cup in the 70's & 80's did they face a European Powerhouse.

 

You can rarely lose 3 games and qualify. Its almost impossible. 10 points Is considered the minimum needed to get out the group generally. You then play about as many games as you do in the old EC format anyway if you reach the final. last 16, 1/4 finals, semi finals, final,

This is always against the cream of europe, very few minnows have ever got out of the group. the knockout stages generally contain teams from the 5 biggest leagues in world football something that never happened in the old EC.
