We only have one other winger, Pilkington. And redmond was far worse than Snodders, so surely therefor Snodders has to play as Pilks would replace Redmond?
what went right yesterday? what went wrong? were we set up in an attacking manner? yes did we go for the win? yes did the manager change the side after a poor performance? yes did he make the right substitutions at the right times? yes did the players create decent opportunities in the final third to create excellent chances? yes was their decision making in key areas and final ball any good? no not a lot the manager could have done differently yesterday. look, the guy has his faults but he also has his positives and the result against villa has been taken badly because of who it was against and being off the back of a poor performance the week before. in the grand scheme of things we'll probably play a lot worse at times this season and still get results. as normal, there is an over reaction from certain elements of the support - we come to expect that these days. certainly the reaction of those around me in the barclay when boos were heard was one of astonishment and anger at those dishing our the abuse as it was completely uncalled for. i'm not stupid - i can see hughton is fast becoming under increasing pressure from some fans and the more that builds the bigger the chance of his position becoming untenable and our chance of relegation becomes very real, but frankly a lot of the hughton bashing after yesterday is aimed in the wrong direction. i'd love to know what others would have done so differently if they were in his shoes. some of our approach play was good, very good at times. i notice we've only lost twice at home in the league in 2013 - both against villa. typical!
i'd play pilkington every day of the week. he's a clever player, both footed, and doesn't piss about with the ball when in good areas. i'd persist with snodgrass on the right but he will have to buck his ideas up. he didn't come second in player of the year for no reason. redmond will be a greater asset when taking on tired defences at the moment. he needs to be eased in gently - he is far from the finished article but then i think we all appreciate that on this board
A sensible and objective post. The ranting on here is beyond belief, albeit driven by passion. To take one crazy example, the notion that the players should have been drilled to play the right pass (e.g. the garido pilks incident) is just nonsensical. How many times do players pick the wrong pass, despite it being drilled into them during training, there is nothing any manager can do at that moment at time - the only thing that can be done is to review the match and set up training to try and improve that. Will CH do that, no of course not he'll sit on his arse and not try to address the issues (just a tinge of sarcasm in the last sentence)
It was obvious to you, me and the rest of the watching world. I would be totally in favour of playing the same way every week (even at the expense of some bad beatings perhaps), in an attempt to find the missing link in the final third.
there is nothing wrong with the coaching. they are well drilled - better, arguably than under lambert (well, culverhouse really) - but there is something missing on a match day. players eem to panic a bit when in good positions - that is down to a lack of confidence i expect but hughton needs to address that
No, I'm talking about after the ball had gone past him and Ruddy made the first save. Turner had just stopped and didn't continue to track back, if he had he would have been in the right position to stop Agbonlahor pulling the ball back for Kozak to score. They both switched off for some reason, and as we all know you just cannot afford to do that in this division.
Not sure if we are talking past each other, but I was trying to highlight that coaching can address the panic and part of the coaching is reviewing matches. for example you highlight that to Snodgrass you beat the player brilliantly, now look up - help him to see that the perfect option was on- but by beating him again the opportunity has gone, you are instilling confidence but modifying how players make choices, similarly with Garido example, you have found space fantastically, and have so much space, there is time to look up, think and pass. It is pretty straightforward sports psychology
This all day long, there is no spontaneity in our play, its all to drilled and planned, so predictable.
Hmmmm a well drilled side yet when it comes to matchday it doesn't work. Could it be this well drilled formation, positioning and movement is badly devised. Surely not. This is Chris Hughton, the man with a plan.
Result and final ball performance aside, you must have enjoyed the passing in the middle from Fer and Howson? This was our best performance in years in the middle, shame the rest was such ****.
in a way, you're right about being 'well drilled' in that its a term which tends to be associated with organisation rather than fluidity or creativity, but not the way you've mentioned. did you watch the match? we passed the ball well in midfield, were quite inventive, formed triangles, the movement was good, we used the full backs and worked our way into good positions, especially in wide areas. the break down always came on the final ball or choosing the wrong pass. do you honestly think hughton asks players to choose the wrong option or give the ball away when in a great position? my point being, you can work on all these things in training and perfect them but if a player cocks up during a match they can't go back and work on it again until they're back in training. a few of their heads went down a bit - for me, that is the thing that i'm slightly worried about. they needed to show a bit more character which to be fair, snodgrass did 2nd half, even though he was struggling for form and a load of idiots in the crowd got on his back.
My comments are solely to do with games so far, I missed yesterday's game. I don't think Hughton asks them to pick the wrong option, it's the options the manager makes available that are wrong. It's all wide, wide, wide, early, early, early, cross, shoot, cross with a smidgen of genuine interplay. I bet the ball rarely got to the byline to pull back, that's what genuine interplay brings.
there was nothing wrong with the options available to our players yesterday. the movement was good, we got plenty of bodies forward, we got in good areas and then either floated a poor cross into the box or under hit it or failed to pick out the good running of rvw. a lot of our best play came centrally thanks to the very impressive fer and howson (looked a good partnership to be fair though i'd like to see them helped by someone sitting behind them so they can bomb forward). the full backs got to the byline a few times but rarely managed a decent cross while redmond was totally ineffective with and without the ball and snodgrass was struggling for form. i really think you need to watch the match before slating the manager because on this occasion, he did pretty much all you'd hope for. we passed the ball nicely and you'd have had an orgasm at the amount of good possession we had. hughton isn't the one making the final key pass, nor is he telling them to **** it up. i met up with a villa-supporting mate after the game and he agreed they were exceptionally lucky to win the game as they were under the cosh for long spells. they did look a threat early on on the counter though and it was us throwing too many bodies forward and falling asleep at the back which led to our downfall
Again, I keep hearing the term crossing, you don't need genuine good play to put a cross in. You do to play someone in with a pass. There's a huge difference in set up.
what nonsense. so a team working their way through midfield and then into a good crossing position isn't 'good play'? and you didn't watch the match carrabuh. maybe you should as you are making comments blind. on one occasion russell martin played the pass of the season so far - it was sublime - and snodgrass pissed the cross away. the initial build up was outstanding and the passing that led to the martin pass was too.
I'm not,I'm making inferences from the season so far, which has very much been what I said. I obviously can't go by anything you say, because you over egg everything. Stating players can do this and that, when in truth they can't. If the interplay is so good, why the emphasis to keep getting the ball out wide and so damn early, it makes no sense. are you saying hughton couldn't see a failure from the wings, but stuck with it (despite howson and fer producing the more incisive and crisper passing) it's hughtons obsession with low risk and out wide attitude that is resulting in a lack of options. It's certainly well drilled.
i over egg things? pot. kettle! i repeat, you did not even watch the match. how the hell can you describe what happened out there based on previous games? if that's the case i could describe how we played at the etihad last may and you'd have to take what i say seriously because it has happened! hughton took redmond off so yes, he changed it. i think we went out wide a tad too often when a better alternative was infield but then we were constantly overlapping the full backs and getting in behind them so if its working, why change it? there were two occasions where rvw would have been in and we held on to the ball too long - they didn't switch the ball out wide, they just didn't use it - poor decision making as i say. the main problem, as i keep bloody saying was the final ball into the box and the decision making of the players when in great positions or with great options ahead of them! we were also a little unlucky with a few blocks and deflections that just didn't fall our way - sometimes they go for you, sometimes not and they aren't bouncing our way right now.
I'm not describing what happened, you are, I'm reacting to your description based on the season so far and what I know of your appreciation of the low brow elements of football and trying to pass them of as quality (a constant theme to your posts). You could describe the Etihad, and I wouldn't have to take what you say seriously (and the truth is I wouldn't). Anyway, so we've established poor decision making and the final ball. So we need some midfielders who can pass.........hmmmmm interesting concept, I like it. and yes, you do over egg things.
