do you remember the times back then!
95% of all football league players were English and we were getting over the 1966 WC win and beginning our failures in the 1970 1974 ones.. the game was beginning to change Pick the best from the 70's and what a team...will do when I get home ..gow galley garland sweeny ritchiefear tainton merrick Jacobs gillies whitehead hunter royle mabbut mann Emanuel collier and Mike Gibson just sneaks in played until 72 season etc etc etc

those were times when no agents no stupid contracts hardly any stewards entry by turnstile was effortless gates were opened 5 mins after second half had started..could sneak in for free!!!! clarks pie programme and tea less than 50p!?

    Cash
    Sweeney,Collier,HUNTER,Speedy.
    Tainton,GOW,Mann,Whitehead.
    CHEESE and Ritchie.
(Garland was a better player than Ritchie, but Tom gets my vote because of his link up with Cheese)

PS - What a spine, Hunter, Gow and Cheese - Oh, if they could have played more together.

If only we had a team capable of the same togetherness and belief that these heroes had.

Happy days, a long long time ago. Football has moved on, Bristol City haven't

IT is blunt guess you never saw these in action they pretty much overlapped a 10-15 year period? Galley scored a hatrick on his first home game? I think...he was a big loping centre forward always looked "clumsy" but his head and feet wernt

in 1972 /3 we were bottom after 5 games and finished 5th, 42 games played

Happier days!! mind you don't forget not long after that we did the "drop" 1st to 4th in three seasons. To include a certain manager called Hodgson (for a while) and who can forget the glorious loss to Mansfield in the FRT with a certain David Moyes missing a penalty. Oh the heady days of supporting the "mighty" BCFC!

Didn't Carl Shutt and Joe Royle also score hat-tricks on their home debuts ?

John Galley's biggest asset was 'heart'. Great in the air, ordinary on the floor but didn't Big John 'show'.

Not old enough to rate Atyeo, Cheese was the best since but John Galley was/is my favourite.

I can remember back to '69 when City beat Norwich 4-0 and Charlton 6-0 in the space of 4 days with John Galley scoring 5! He was not only good with his head but had a cracking shot as well. I think Alan Skirton got a couple as well.

    Gerty Meyer.
Who remembers his debut goal ?
I missed it, as I was 10 minutes late, but my dad was electified by it.
Meyer looked one of the most dangerous players in the league that day

    Shame it didnt last

    Here is an interesting aside
When you consider the impact made here by Nicky Maynard, consider that he has failed to find a first team place both at Cardiff and West Ham.
Thinking back to days of yore, that puts him on the bench with Perti Jantunen. <doh>

    And Soren Anderson....
Does anyone remember the equalising goal he scored at Sunderland live on Sky ? We'd been outplayed for 85 minutes and were 1-0 down, and it wouldn't have flattered Sunderland if they'd been 8-0 up, then Anderson equalised with a couple of minutes left to give us a draw. Get in !!

Yes I remember! but a sight on goal Soren Anderson was deadly, hard and accurate shots in the back of the neck, Lita was close to that and Steve Brooker, shame about Brooker's injuries as he would of been such a top striker.

Anderson was a very decent player and Andy Cole was also deadly in front of goal for us. The hat-trick he scored away at Luton was simply brilliant in a 3-0 win
