Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn has insisted that the club's final standing of 10th in the Premier League was a pleasing outcome.

A great start to the season saw Sunderland reach a high of 6th and talk of European football didn’t seem out of the question.

However a poor end to the season saw the Black Cats slip down the table to finish in 10th position but Quinn has said that he was satisfied with the club’s final league position.

He told the club’s official website: “It’s been an up and down sort of season but I think the way it came to close made us all quietly satisfied.

“Our target, even when we reached sixth in January, was always to finish in the top ten so to achieve that, albeit in such a dramatic way, was pleasing.

“Given the fantastic first five or six months we had at the start, it’s understandable that there is a shade of wondering what might have been.

“But the excuses for that dip in results since the end of January are fully justified and it’s important that we consider the injury situation and how we can alleviate that as we analyse the season and look to continue progressing next year.”

Sunderland will be in their fifth consecutive season in the top flight for the first time since the mid-1980’s and Quinn has revealed his delight that the club has re-established itself in the Premier League.

He added: “One of the major positives for me was to watch the final games of the season and for us not to be looking over our shoulders.

“It was such a dramatic final day for those teams trying to stay in the division and it was great to watch that part of the table with a degree of detachment.

“It’s been a good few years since the club maintained its top flight status for this long

Sod that, tell us what's really ****ing happening,

All to quiet on the Sunderland front,

Why are you letting our best players gp?

Has the money already been pledged to Bruce?

What does Ellis Short expect, this coming season?

These are the questions WE want to know, not your support for Bruce, as we gather that, and he has ours too, but what the hells going on.

All to quiet on the Sunderland front!

Most players are on holiday. The transfer window always starts quiet and that goes for every team.

Why are you letting our best players go?

No point keeping anyone who would rather be elsewhere.

Has the money already been pledged to Bruce?

What's the sense in letting the opposition know how much cash we have?

What does Ellis Short expect, this coming season?

    Improvement on tenth IMO.

Would agree with this, but only summer will tell what Short expects next season. If he properly backs Bruce and we do well in the market it could be 8th- otherwise, with the squad we've got and the players we're currently linked with, I expect he'd be happy just to consolidate top 10.

    Too much negativity going around.

Has there been any significant signings by any EPL club? NO so why should we jump the gun?

And who are the best players that are leaving?

Reading between the lines of what has been going on with the club recently, makes me believe they are concerned with the level of season ticket sales at present. In my opinion that explains the players up for sale and the lack of communication coming from the club.

Which of our best players have been let go?? Bent?? He was awful leading up to his 24m transfer and his head and heart were elsewhere. The only thing we could have done differently was keep him till the end of the season to give Gyan and Wellbeck competition for places as that's all he basically was towards the end of his SAFC career.

Henderson - "no smoke without fire" is probably right - but it's not like we're letting him go for peanuts. He had a bad second half of the season (but a great season and a half leading up to that) and finished with some impressive stats for the season also. I personally think Gyan is a better all round player than Bent and without his injuries I think he'd have got 13 or 14 goals in the limited time he played - Sessegnon I think we'll really see the best of next season and also Cattermole - if he's fully fit I think we will see a very good player in our midfield

Agreed syd - RAW I normally agree with you but on this definitely not mate - Since Quinn took over we've had hardly any comms from the club about transfers and moneys and things have been kept under wraps. I reckon things will be ticking along and we'll be looking at players but that's it.

Remember the henderson talk has only come from the press so far - nothing concrete from the club, player or anything else for that matter (YET!!)

I found the part comparing Gyan to Bent interesting, even though i disagree in some ways.

And see your standing by Catts, which judging by many posts lately, your in the minority. As if a bid comes in most want to take it.

Catts is similar to Gordon in that on their day they can win or save matches but, their days are few and far between due to injuries & suspensions, i'd rather have consistency in my team than the odd flash of brilliance.
