Fair comment but we are not talking about ONE player. This is about a 'designed' performance. The Norwegians were presuambly playing to their managers instructions. I can excuse Spurs for being dragged down by the game but I cannot excuse The Norwegians or Uefa for the way this match was set up. And the wider issue of charging serious money for a tournament that offers this kind of garbage. It would be more of a game if we had been playing Lancing FC, and I mean no offence to Lancing, and it would not have cost so much to set up.

Spurf, I was going to start a thread about attitudes but due to the temperature on here this morning I didn't. I don't understand this"We did what we had to do" stance or "Why push ourselves?" It seems that some people think that when we are 2-0 up it's a case of "That's it, we're ahead, we've won it,let's hold back now." It's as if they think that the team should stop because they're ahead against whoever we are playing. I don't agree with this attitude. Not scoring for an hour against Tromso shows a weakness that must be sorted out. I'm not going to post too much more until I see what Tromso do in their next match. I stand by what I posted this morning on all points.

I give up. I hope we cruise to a 3-0 win against Cardiff so everyone can moan some more

0-3 against Cardiff would be perfect for me, so would 0-2.

Usually I've been told I'm quite pessimistic at times which tends to be seen as a negative approach and negative aura yet I'm stunned at the the amount of criticism and negativity on this thread regarding last nights match.

We won 3-0 and kept a clean sheet yet again, our 6th in 7 games. Just because we eased it down after the first two goals doesn't mean there should be a cause for concern or that it wasn't worth the money paid or that the team can't afford to do that in the Prem (it wasn't in the Prem though was it?!). I went to the match, just as I do every other home game and I left WHL more than satisfied.

We had a few players still getting back to full fitness, a player making his first start for the club and a few squad players alongside the likes of Lloris, Dawson, Rose and Dembele being the only first teamers to have featured heavily for us this season in the League. After 2-0, the players realised Tromso were going to be no match, so why over-exert themselves and risk injury and fatigue? We ended up with injuries anyway which was the only negatives of the night. For sure we could've kept up the pressure and probably won by 5 or 6 but there was no need, the players were right to keep it simple and conserve energy to ensure who ever is picked for Cardiff (and Villa) has as much energy as possible, those two teams will provide a much tougher match. When Eriksen :)D) came on the tempo picked up a little more anyway for the last 20-25 mins and we were treated to an absolute wonder goal - which was nearly worth the price of the match ticket alone for me.

I really don't get those complaining about last night, honestly guys it's a joke. 3 goals scored, another clean sheet, 2 goals for a striker who's gagging for a start in the Prem and a wonder goal from our new signing in only his 2nd appearance yet some are still finding something to moan about?! Unbelievable. We've got a hectic period coming up with games flowing thick and fast, if we're able to comfortably win a game without having to get out of 2nd gear, I'd happily take it, especially if it means that come the likes of Chelsea and West Ham, we'll be as fit as possible and ready to show what Tottenham Hotspur can really do.

AS long as you and others are prepared to pay to see such dross then uefa will keep dishing it up. I am not talking about Spurs, I am talking about the opposition and the competition. I still think Spurs should have taken this team apart but fair enough it's easy for your own performance to be dragged down by playing lesser opponents. Stop counting ****ing goals and start looking at the appaling level of football.

AND stop supporting joke competitions that bring football into disrepute.

I think that Tromso's lack of ability and their presence in the competition is a bit of a fluke, to be honest, so I'm not going to blame UEFA for that.
The only portion of blame that they should accept for it is for their awful handling of the Turkish match-fixing case. Should've been dealt with before the teams played.

A few things disappointed me last night and I think that the main one, narrowly ahead of a slightly off team selection, was that those outside of the first XI didn't seem to want to force things.
With weak opposition that were there to be taken apart, I expected some of those looking for more starts to put them to the sword to prove a point.
We got another clean sheet, racked up a few goals and did a job, but I want to see more competition for places.
Nitpicking? Possibly, but we've got a big squad and it should be a competitive one.

Not nitpicking, we should have taken them apart and the fact that we didn't concerns me a little. If others are happy then fine but I'm not.

I don't support a competition, I don't support an organisation, I support Tottenham Hotspur! And yes, I am more than prepared to pay to see this "dross", I pay to watch my team regardless of the level of opposition we face or what competition it's in. There were times last season and previous ones where we drew against teams of similar stature/ calibre. Who gives any team the divine right to automatically rip a team apart anyway? Nothing in football is a given. Tromso earned their right to play in the Europa League, just as we did. 3-0 is a result that showed our dominance, we're not going to win every game 5-0 like Tbilisi away just because the opponent is of a lesser quality. Winning by 1 or 10 goals would have still resulted in us taking the 3 points needed to ensure we try and progress from the group stages.

If we win Europa, will it still be a joke competition to you? Will you choose not to celebrate the triumph because of your distaste for UEFA?

Debatable. They entered as Norway's Fair Play place and were reinstated after Besiktas were kicked out for match fixing, having already been eliminated by the Turkish side.

It's still earning their right though, at least in my opinion.

If another team has cheated, whether that be by match fixing/ fielding ineligble players etc then their recent opposition in the tournament they've been ejected from takes their place, it's only fair in my opinion.

A goal worthy of Bale PNP, I thought so last night too. Beautiful through passes to Defoe also.

Seems rather unfair to the original opposition in Turkey, to me. The 5th placed Turkish side, Kayserispor, seem to have missed out because two other sides cheated.

"Not scoring for an hour against Tromso shows a weakness that must be sorted out."

It does point to a general problem in recent times that Spurs have against opponents
who set themselves up so. When Spurs pass more directly and with more urgency, you
get the 1st half. When that drops off (for whatever reason) , the opposition seem to
become emboldened and you get most of the 2nd half.

If the next 5 EL games are going to produce such contentious debate I think it might be an idea to give these EL group stage match threads a miss, creating and posting, unless someone else wants them then be my guest. I honestly believe its just going to be the same points from the same posters being vociferously defended, and yes, I put my hand up at being one. I'm not happy with the comp and opposition, but we're in it, and I'd love to win it...who wouldn't, but we have bigger fish to fry either side of these unfortunate wastes of time, and should concentrate our views on that perhaps.

Agreed RDBD. We beat Tbilisi by five goals away which for me means we should have scored at least that at home where we have an advantage but it didn't happen. Again we seem to be scoring more in the EL than in the PL which is a bit of a baffler to me. We as supporters seem to be polarized in our opinions about last night and the overall performances over the young season. Yes we are third and yes we are not leaking at the back but to me we are still not COMPLETELY effective in front of goal. Soldado must start scoring in the PL soon.
notso, contentious debate can be avoided by not responding to views with which you disagree.

Well, regardless of who the opponents are, Spurs have to :

    1. clock up the UEFA rankings points.
In 2010, we got in CL "pot 2" with 57 pts. This summer Citeh failed to get in pot 2 by less than 1
ranking point, and that was with a total of 70 odd.

So in the event Spurs get a CL slot, we are probably looking at 75 pts to get drawn in pot 2.
Which means probably getting to the QFs again.

    2. Better manage the fixture numbers and congestion by utilising the squad well.
Because the same problem will exist if Spurs get into the CL.
