Boss rejects loan deal Sunderland, Last updated: 5 hours 12 minutes ago Views: 224 Paolo Di Canio has revealed he turned down an offer from an unnamed Championship club for the services of Lee Cattermole last week. Cattermole has a future at Sunderland following a meeting at the club with Di Canio last week and he is almost ready to return after a knee injury. A Championship club came in for him when the loan window opened but the boss turned down the offer as he needs the "intensity" that British players bring as he prepares for the trip to West Brom. "I said no, I have to be honest 10 days ago the answer would have been yes, but I need British players. I need the quality, the intensity," said Di Canio, "I need the fire. I've said to Lee Cattermole show me this character, this quality, this professionalism, this desire, and you will start games."

The Black Cats boss has spoken out about the future of the 25-year-old combative midfielder, who looked set to be on his way out of the Stadium of Light during the summer transfer window when it seemed he was not in the Italian's plans. However, with the transfer window closed for business and Cattermole remaining on Wearside, Di Canio has offered him an olive branch and a way back into the first-team fold. But he also warned the former skipper that he will be back out in the cold if he refuses to toe the line. He said: "I don't have prejudice and now that he's back with us, I treat him like the most important player in the squad, but he has to follow my regime, he has to stay in my circle. "If he is going to jump out, he can't stay with me."

Just what he needs, no more trashing cars, no more reckless challenges, an on form catts (from what i can remember of him its been that long) is an assett to any club and cm berth

I'm sure Catts will rise to the challenge and want to show what he can do, I just hope he does it by playing football and not being reckless. We've always played pretty decent football with Catts in the team.

Catts is by far and away our best dm. Hope he sorts himself out off the field as he could be a Ki part in our midfield

50-50 on this one. He's either the best person or the worst. It all depends on how Catts reacts to him. Hopefully with a level head in which case he could be a real asset to us and our midfield may actually be a lot stronger than I though (if we can keep catts and Ki injury-free). Although we still won't be pulling up any trees with that CM pairing it's a hell of a lot better than Vaughan / Larsson which is lower half Championship material imo at best.

Gardner impressed on Satuday but in the past I have thought his passing was woeful and his tackling very dodgy, although he seemed to improved on both fronts at the weekend. I hope it was for good and not just a one-off. I do fear he is the new Catts though in the ref's minds after the yellow he got withing 5 minutes for absolutely nothing!!

It's just a gut feeling like. But Paolo suffered misdirected passion as a player much like Catts. It's good common ground to build a professional relationship. I just think the more paolo sees of him on the pitch more he'll love him and the more determined he'll be to channel and mould his passion. Rooney Benefited much the same from Fergy. Not seen a manager yet who can do it with Barton, but if the right manager worked with him then what a player the **** could be. These fiery players need close guidance and I just have a feeling Paolo is the mentor Catts has needed. A firm hand whilst holding true empathy for the fire he carries.

    Good post this.

I suppose we`ll find out soon enough in his first start. If he picks up a card early on it`ll be `here we go again` time and there`ll be plenty of referees waiting to pounce.

Catts could make a real difference but he`s his own worst enemy at times.

I hope you`re right about Paolo but I must admit to not being convinced. For me, he hasn`t shown much in the way of man management skills up to now. You mentioned passion and that may indeed be the common denominator. It will work only if it`s properly harnessed. That`s going to be the hard part.

Maybe Paulo can have the same influence on Catts that Fergie had on Roy Keane

I said on anbother post that it looked to me like Paolo put Catts and Alfie in the same position - Alfie (who everyone thought was great) decided "**** this I'm going to play where I know I'll start every week" and Catts thought "**** that I want to stay and fight for a place in the team". I want players like that at the club - I love watching him when fully fit and on top form - no attacking midfield like playing against him and, when he was on form for us, he outplayed City's multi million midfield. 100% and he has a bit of ability as well - looking forward to seeing what Di Canio can do with him

Cattermole is not our savior, how people can think he is the answer is beyond me, he is more like the only defensive midfield option in midfield.

Why we let N'Daiye go still baffles most of us when Cattermole has been injured for god knows how long and probably is another month away from match fitness.

I dont doubt his energy he brings but you need more than being able to close down to be a pro footballer, hes good without the ball but absolutely useless with it but then again I suppose we never have the ball so will be useful for us until we get players who can actually keep possession, oh I can dream.

We have gone downhill big time since the Catermole/Cana partnership and we certainly have not improved or built upon what we had. On form and when fit Catts is one of the best for breaking up play and marshalling the team, maybe he needed someone like Di Canio to look up to as a manager, I'm not sure the previous two had the same motivational skills. Hope he plays some part on Saturday (and stays on the pitch!)
