Sunderland head coach Paolo Di Canio says that he has better players to use in central midfield than Cabral, but has challenged the new signing to fight for his place in the side.

Cabral joined Sunderland on a free transfer as part of Di Canio’s 14 summer signings and featured prominently in pre-season.

Cabral started the first game of the season at home to Fulham but has fallen behind fellow central-midfielders David Vaughan, Craig Gardner and loan-signing Ki Sung-Yeung.

Following Sunderland’s 3-1 defeat at home to Arsenal, when asked about Cabral’s future at the club, Paolo Di Canio said:

“At this moment in time, I think I have a better footballer who can give me a better job in the middle than Cabral.

“I have players with a bit more fire, more high-tempo and physical presence.

“Obviously little David Vaughan does not have much physical presence but he is sharp.

“He did not do so well against Arsenal but in the last two games he has been one of our best players.

“He is sharp and plays the game in England better than Cabral who has a slow pace at this moment.

“And Ki Sung-Yeung – even if he looked tired in the second half against Arsenal – he has quality, he keeps the ball and is calm.

“And then in the second half Craig Gardner came on and he added fire and did very well.

“So at this moment it is difficult for Cabral.

“It does not mean he will not play for me in the future but I have to be honest and say it is difficult for me right now - I say ‘one day’, if he shows he understands his football.

“You have to work so hard against the top sides, you have to change gear, change pace and Cabral has found that difficult. But we will see what happens.”

Cabral’s agent Walter Fernandez said: “I spoke yesterday with Cabral because he is not happy with the situation.

“He understands that the person who makes the choice is the trainer. So we have to respect the choice of Paolo Di Canio.

“He [Cabral] wants to work, he is a fighter. He is not in Sunderland to stay just six months to go to another club, he wants to help this place.”

If Cabral plays on Saturday after this latest PDC public broadcast about him bring 4th pick it will be a farce. Paolo has the strangest ideas about team morale building I've ever seen and we can only hope this unique approach starts to pay off sooner rather than later. However, it's all about results on the pitch.

If we start to win games as he did with Swindon after a poor beginning then I'll tip my hat but if it actually does I'll eat it afterwards.

I think you will be gutted if we start playing like most people on here think we will..

We've played better football over the last couple of games then we ever did under previous managers..

The Pdc bashing isn't helping you pal, and I don't know what you plan to gain out of it!!

PDC bashing? Whats that then, my opinion that I don't feel he is capable of doing the job? Is that really bashing or is it just an opinion? Why on earth would I be gutted if we start playing wonderful football and winning games? That's a really crass, stupid and quite frankly highly embarrassing thing for you to say tbh? Yes I may not believe he can do the job but that's not to say I don't want him to. Do you think I like talking to mags on a daily basis, that are ripping the piss out of me, without anything to shove back at them? Do you think there is some joy to be had in seeing our club lose 3 games out of the first 4 and be bottom of the league?

Just because I think something different doesn't mean I love my club less chum and just because you have a different stance that you love it more.

I also have serious doubts over PDC but I (and I know you do as well cest) want him to succeed as that means the club is doing well. I feel That it's not just the mentality of the players or the clubs future working model that need to change, PDC also has to look at certain aspects of his managerial style as having everyone on tender hooks isn't a good way to move forward bringing stability into the club one which will look inviting to players.

Football is all about results though Derry and ours under PDC, for at least the last 4 anyway, have been poor (worse if you go back to last season). Whatever the feelings for PDC, losing games is habit forming. I remember the 2005 season only too well and yet we actually played some decent stuff that season in patches too. I was at Sid James where we were beaten 3-2 and played them off the park with 2 cracking goals. However, we were relegated with 15 points that season.

Now I don't think we will threaten that record but the fact remains, the longer we go without out a win and indeed keep losing games, the bigger the pressure will ramp up. All the discussion and the arguing is as a result of the teams failure on the pitch and to stop it PDC needs to start fashioning some wins and soon. He knows it more than us but he also will know that failure is no longer an option in a TV generated £60m+ income business.

I also cannot subscribe to the feeling amongst some that even if we were relegated we should stick with the manager? Our squad is more than capable of performing to a mid-table height. If we don't manage that, then there is only one man to blame imo. (and its not me as some would like to believe Lol)

Unfortunately Cabral has just let Liverpool reserves run past him and take the lead 3-2. Lacked concentration

I don't disagree with that mate, especially the last paragraph as that IMO should be classed as a massive failure.

Thing is, he is a 24 year old footballer with over 150 games behind him and has played at UEFA and Champions League standard. He didn't sit down with his agent in the summer and decide to come here to play with a group of kids in our reserves on a chilly Lancashire evening in September did he? From the 2 games I've seen him play he was our best midfielder on show and has already scored a goal from open play against a top 6 EPL team. Oh and he had the same standard of English when we signed him. Its not like he has unlearned the language over the summer is it?

He wasn't one for the future he was one for now and he isn't even getting a place on the bench. Its not even like the players picked ahead of him are turning on the style and we are winning games is it?

Something just isn't right about this for me.

Why? What does that tell you fella? Tells me he shouldn't be anywhere near the first team if he's struggling to compete in the reserves.

Tells me you have a very simplistic view on how professional footballers think.
