Olsson was my man of the match vs Bury but then he didn't figure in the squad against Southampton afterwards (Injury, or maybe because he had played for Sweden just around there?) and I guess Hughton felt Garrido kept a clean sheet vs Soton so deserved to stay. But next match IMO, Garrido had to stop aimlessly hoofing the ball long if he plays, else Olsson should be starting. I understand why Hughton went for the more defensive left-back, but in the end it backfired as he just gave the ball away far, far, far too often.

just one minor pedantic point, playing well against Bury is not really the same as playing well against Spurs and Olsson didn't look very good against ROI recently.

Surely if Hughton's worried about Olsson being too attack minded all he has to do is tell Olsson to focus on defending? I don't mind Garrido, and did not see the Spurs game but left back is looking to be one of our weakest areas...

Don't see anything pedantic about your point Longsight. Absolutely pertinent and "to the point". As a general comment, instead of telling Chris Hughton he should have done this and should have done that, as many posters are quick to jump in and do, why don't people start from the assumption that he is not a complete idiot or completely irrational and furthermore has a wealth of information about individual players that none of us have. When he makes a decision that people don't agree with, the first question should be "Given that he probably has good reasons for doing what he did, can we work out why he did it?" It amazes me how often people think they know better without first even offering a half-plausible explanation of why CH did what he did!

Fenland posed the right question about Olsson, but didn't ask what reasons Hughton may have had for NOT subbing Snodgrass. Until you know, or at least offer a half-plausible explanation of why he didn't, how can you say he got it wrong? And if you can't offer an even half-plausible explanation of why he didn't, my conclusion would be you don't know enough about the relevant factors to make a judgement on it. <ok>

It really is the premier league that causes this division in fans. I was thinking the other day about it and had a look around these boards and others and we are no different than any other club in this league in our position fan wise. We were spoilt with fan unity in recent years but once we got here... What do we do. We get our arses by the big boys, get the odd upset and do well against teams on our level and all the fans start pulling in all different directions. We want the FA cup, we want the league cup we want Europe we want top ten we want stability we want excitement. However, it's the same at Fulham at west ham at Sunderland, he'll even Swansea fans are gettin peeved with their manager. Villa have lost 3 games in a row and will be on lamberts back for sure.

I don't know what will happen this season but the lack of direction and fan unity worry a me. I just don't want to see a charlton type situation. It's got to be all about building a dynasty. All these short term squabbles are inconsequential next to a lasting premier league dynasty surely? I don't know. I just hope we beat the ****ing **** out of villa.

I think those stats just remind me of how little of the ball we got, I did expect 40-odd percent possession on our part but it was a lot lower than I thought It would be. Anyone think we could have kept the ball better? or were Spurs just too good?

I agree, one of the things that puzzles me about substitutions and the clamour to make changes when things aren't going the way people like is the assumption that the subs will miraculously turn things around. Substitutions frequently make absolutely no difference, but when they do, the manager is hailed as a tactical genius. I was talking to the translator for Mancini prior to his departure and according to him most teams do not have a plan B, but pretend they do when things work out.

The problem was we should have kept the ball a lot better and spurs were very good

Have to agree with the above.
ON PAPER - If you consider that no one would be surprised if we lost all 12 games to top 6 sides, thats 31.6% of our games straight away. I guess no one would be surprised if we lost all our away games to top 12-7 position teams, that another 15.8%.

So thats 47.4% of games i am not going to be overly surprised if we lose. I'm not being negative i'm just being Honest... if we lost to a Newcastle away, not a massive shock. At home, that is a bit more disappointing.

Obviously, it never works out completely like that - that is the beauty of football after all.

My point being, until we are such an established mid table to top ten premier league team, we are going to have to accept we are going to lose the odd game. Some people need thicker skin.

When you are in league one you are striving for the championship, when you are in the championship you are striving for the prem. When you get to the prem you a buoyed on by playing the big teams every week but once that becomes commonplace, as it has for us now, people start to pull in all different directions.

With us this is amplified by the way in which we drove through the leagues with such ambition.

It bothered me last season, but the negativity now is just part of being a club in our position I think.

The extremes in either camp (the "Hughton can do no wrong"ers to the "Hughton is the antichrist"ers are in the wrong and everyone else is, frankly, confused.

I think an element of it is we are in the top league now and I think psychologically we expect to go down almost instantaneously, so we want to rush and achieve our goals before we fall again. It's unrealistic we will achieve stability to the extent of we are never in danger of going down.

Basically, unity amongst fans is unlikely in the near future, whomever is in charge.

Yeah mate, while my betters discuss football tactics I am running the supporter unity angle. Maybe we can all go bowling or sing kumbahyah round the campfire.

yep, welcome to life to clubs outside of the top six. the gulf is so big between them and the rest. the likes of fulham have been finishing mid-low table for years, ok they got in the europa league and got to the final.
beefs got a great point, it leads to infighting

I don't feel that I am in the pro or anti Hughton camp.Probably because he was only my third choice when Lambert left. He's done ok.The first aim was to keep us in the top flight and despite all the panic and hubris in March and April we were never even close to relegation.Against that a lot of our football was dire and fully justified us being in last spot on MOTD week in week out.So my evaluation of Hughton was mixed. The trouble is the pro and anti factions amplify anything thay feel gives strength to their cause.

Saturday was disappointing, but probably not as much as going down 1-3 at home to Arsenal,or losing at home to Newcastle as Villa did.Can you imagine the howls of anguish had that been us? Personally I don't think the Mags are as bad as is made out but the headlines would have been "Home defeat by relegation rivals".

I think to talk about "pro" and "anti" Hughton factions misrepresents most of those who come on here and defend him. There is a definite anti-Hughton faction, but most of those labelled "pro" just feel that the criticism is vastly overdone and often doesn't give him credit for what he HAS done. It takes little account of the circumstances in which he took over and the limited resources he had at his disposal. Nor does it show much understanding of the longer-term interests of the club, or trust in the judgement of those running it. It seems pretty obvious to me that everybody involved, owners, board, CEO, backroom staff, management team and players are all pulling together with only one objective -- doing their best to secure a future for us as an established Premier League club. We are further on the way to achieving that objective than all but 10 or 12 of the country's professional football clubs -- yet people moan, grumble, criticise and behave like a lot of spoilt kids who aren't instantly getting what they think they are entitled to. <ok>
