''I think they shot the wrong Kennedy''.Bob Paisley on Alan Kennedys debut in 1978.This quote is actually true,Because I've met ''Barney'' and asked him was it true and he confirmed it. The only time and I made this point on another article that the only time Shanks dismissed Man United was in 1968 when he went through their team and said ''Alec Stepney..couldn't catch a cold,Tony Dunne..farts move faster...Nobby Stiles...blind as a bat'' and on he went until he got to Best,Law and Charlton..and then he said ''If you can't beat 3 players, you're all dropped.Liverpool won 2-0 and he said at the end of the game ''Lads you've just beaten the best team in Europe''.He only made his original speech to motivate his players. He wrote off Bobby Moore to a very young Kevin Keegan in 1971 when he said ''That Bobby Moore has a gammy ankle and he's got a head full of dandruff and he looks like he's after being on the beer''Keegan scored and at the end of the game Shanks said ''Son,that Bobby Moore is one fine player''.
More Paisley quotes, the second one in particular made me chuckle: Houllier on Fowler's celebration vs Everton
“If he was an inch taller he’d be the best centre half in Britain. His father is 6ft 2in - I’d check the milkman.” (Sir Alex Ferguson on Gary Neville) “When an Italian tells me its pasta on the plate I check under the sauce to make sure. They are the inventors of the smokescreen.”(Alex Ferguson before Manchester United played Inter Milan in the Champions League Quarter Final 1999) Couple of classics from Fergie. Sure the Neville one will get a few laughs on here
Shanks did dismiss teams and not just Man United, but he did it in team-talks..not the media.Shanks was one of the first to use kidiology, but he did so on his own players. Like the time he told an 18 year old Emlyn Hughes that he was going to be England Captain. He told a newly signed Kevin Keegan in 1971 that he was going to play for England. He motivated more than he dismissed.
I got the quote wrong, but i got the drunken old soaks sentiments correct. http://www.whoateallthepies.tv/man_utd/2196/fergie_says_liv.html
However I was wrong with what Shanks said about Nobby Stiles, thats the version I heard, but the real version is actually far worse, and Bobby Charlton confirmed this. However I was right about what Shanks said at the end of the game..Bobby Charlton a regular visitor to the Liverpool boot-room confirmed this.
Dont know how many of you know this but during Shanks and Busbys times at liverpool and United respectively, when we played each other players and manager would go to the home team managers house for tea.
You obviously dont know that Tommy Doc and Denis Law as well as Matt Busby and Paddy Crerand were good friends of Shanks. Find Law or Docherty quotes and there you will see that it was'nt just Shanks and Busby. Big Jock Stein was also part of the friendship that existed between the Scots. and never was a word said in anger between them. until the Govan Gob appeared and chaos reigned where serenity once existed
B4F. So they are Cajun.Well thats what we used to call them when I lived in Montreal for a spell.Any band that weren't Irish but tried to play Irish music were called ''Cajun''.However they sound better than some of the stuff I've heard. They actually sound authentic Irish.
Well aware of it and Fergie respected those men above most others. his beef was with idiots and to suggest he started it is subjective to say the least. Liverpool under Shanks were not the same liverpool when SAF took over. He also had a job to do and I would say hes done a damn good job of it so his quotes about liverpool worked. He riled up united and got under liverpools skin. Job well done wouldnt you say?
