Attracting players....

The initial summer rumors were linking us with some of the top players (or at least potentially) in the world.

Since then we seem to now be linked with players like Downing, Larsson, Defoe, etc...

I know rumors are only rumors but it's a genuine concern as to how well we can attract players nowadays?

Before Wenger took charge we were a mid table side recovering to a decent 5th placed finish, nothing too flash but the signing of Bergkamp was still a coup despite his stuttering time in Italy.

Wenger came in and turned unknowns into superstars (Veira, Anelka) or resurrected the carrers of others (Overmars, Kanu).

Recently though our stock has taken a dip and as we can't/won't compete with the richer clubs we are in danger of failing to land the players we need to get back on top.

In truth Wenger's bigger transfers haven't really worked, Arshavin has mixed the sublime with the pathetic, Reyes quickly lost all that potential and Wiltord although a very solid player wasn't the striker we were looking for.

The truth is Wenger's recent signings have been more often failures then success.

This is a pivotal season for our long term future and the signings we make will signal a true intent of which direction we are heading in.

 

Wenger seems good at signing cheap players, but not very good at signing expensive ones.

 

I don't understand the peculiar desperation for us to sign/attract household names. I'll be happier if Wenger unearths a couple of gems from South America at a fraction of the cost. I do agree that there's question marks over many of his more recent signings. But hopesully with Stan in charge, and a large chunk of our stadium debt paid off, Wenger will relax, stop trying to outdo himself in uncovering future stars, and spends a few bucks on less risky targets.
