With the help of In That Number I'll attempt to name the players and staff. The first 3 from the left are fairly easy without help. They are: Left to right - Warhurst [trainer], Wayman, Bates, [now help needed] Rochford, Day, Wilkins, Mallet, Ellerington, Webber, Grant, Black, Curtis. Bloody hell, that was difficult. please log in to view this image Think I've got them all right [now]. please log in to view this image
If I've got this right, the back four might have been [if there was such a defensive formation back then..?] Ellerington [RB], Webber [RCB], Mallet [LCB], Rochford [LB]. But of course, in those days, the only Backs were the RB and LB. The CBs were Half Backs, and there were generally 3 of them Right, Centre and Left.
I love the simplicity of it all...I bet that Scouse numpty, Jamie "errrrmmm" Carragher, would still struggle with the concept though...
Gee you have stirred up some memories for me.........Charlie Wayman (up the middle for Charlie) Eric Day were basically the hero's of the Day. I don't remember Ted Bates playing.......Was the goal keeper Ian black? Gee wiz it is a long time ago and I was only 7........
Caption competition:... "We play on the floor, We play on the floor, We are Southampton, We play on the floor"
We used to train up at Bitterne sometimes (Verasity ground) That looks like the changing room that we used there. I seem to remember they had a pitch marked out on the floor like that. Not sure....... only went there twice as a youngster so could be wrong.

Great set of British Pathe films, and finally I've remembered to bookmark the site. Enjoyed your second choice SA, until I realised it was 1953. We know who won the replay because they won the FA Cup that year.
The last game listed, I attended (villa Park)........I came home on leave from the forces and had been delayed by 12 hours. My girl friend had a taxi waiting for me at Eastleigh railway station and they wisked me off to catch the coach. Luckily the coach had waited for me and left about twenty minutes late. I don't think my girl friend appreciated me going to a football match like that and we parted a couple of days later. Mind you she had a point....I had been away for nigh on 18 months....she just was not that understanding that I had been away from my favourite team for just as long too..........
