"My reason for posting this in part is down to my recent experiences on the Bristol City board".

I joined the recent posting on the City board entitled “Jokes of the day” entered a couple of silly jokes then read through some of the postings.

I was shocked and horrified by a "misogynistic joke”posted by Massive on the Bristol City FC not 606 board yesterday.

I thought that WIZ should not condone the “ telling of hateful rape jokes” similar to this one so I posted my thoughts to him.

His response was not quite what I expected

And
Massives reply was even more empathetic

There is no doubt in my mind that rape jokes are unacceptable in any form, none that make it any funnier for any rape victim.
There seems to me very good reasons why you should not to tell rape jokes, so why are WIZ and Massive so keen on printing them?

One suggestion might be that,

“An explanation of some people who might find rape jokes funny are perhaps people who have not been paying attention to the world around them. The privileged, the wilfully ignorant. Both Massive and WIZ might find rape jokes funny, however it says a lot more about them.”

Perhaps they would have a different opinion, if either of them knew a rape victim. Until then there is a real and worrying outcome likely from this ignorance,

“Imagine that you are a comedian. You tell a rape joke, and 20 men in the audience laugh. Of these guffawing pricks, 19 of them are, at best, tedious little solipsists … The other one is a rapist, who will go home thinking his behaviour is perfectly normal and everyone’s in on the joke.“Why rape jokes aren’t funny:source the science”.This equally in my opinion could equally be applied to any social media sites.

Wiz’s reply tried to defend the freedom of expression on the Bristol City board suggesting that I stay off it, and nobody is forcing me to read anything, however the title "Jokes of the day"sounds like a fairly innocuous (Having no adverse effect; harmless, not likely to offend or provoke to strong emotions) posting.

Am I to assume from that comment that everything is a potential target?

Should there be better policing of comments made on N606,do you feel that Jokes about rape should be moderated, It doesn’t take a lot of intelligence to realise that your readers may be people who have suffered sexual assault, racist attacks or know someone who has been a victim.

So, returning to the crux of the issue or issues, why would anyone wish to make unacceptable comments (Jokes) about rape or other crimes such as racism?

Thoughts comments debate and discuss

There are postings on the City board, and very occasionally ours, which I find offensive.
I always have in mind that this site is 'open access'; anyone can find and use it.
That includes young children who are interested in sport. There are often homophobic
postings and (almost) pornographic pictures.
The test for me is, if you are a parent, would you like your child to read or see what has been posted?
This may be a minority view..........................

Statistically... 9 out of 10 people enjoy gang rape.

Lighten up COR. it's a joke. Perhaps the internet isn't for you but what ever you do, Don't ever watch Frankie boyle or Jimmy carr. You'll have a ****ing heart attack.

I have to be honest - I thought it was quite funny.

But then I am a deviant.

I do take P49's point about this forum being open access and some of what's posted is totally unsuitable for kids or those of a certain disposition, that's why I wouldn't allow my eldest boy (the only one computer literate) to go within a million miles of Not606.

However, the rest of us are adults (apart from Lan who is clearly a ladyboy! <diva>). And each of us has different tastes and different levels of acceptance of jokes/content.

I personally love the humour of Boyle/Carr/Sadowitz etc, but I understand that there are those who don't.

On the same token I cannot stand 'torture porn' films like Hostel, Wolf Creek, A Serbian Film etc. etc. I find them disgusting and morally reprehensible, but there are others who love that kind of thing.

It's a difficult one CoR - but I think I would come down against telling others what they can and can't post on their own board. As long as it's not illegal, who am I to impose my own moral code on others? <ok>

Me too. They say what others are scared to and what we find funny but are worried to laugh about it. To many sensitive people around now days, Which is fine but they piss off more people than the joke does.

Oh and CoR - there is absolutely no point in complaining to Wiz or Massive.

Unless you're a Ted, you couldn't wish to find a more charmless pair of ****s! <laugh>

I found the joke in question funny but I do have a warped sense of humour. :D

Some of the stuff some used to post on the uncut forum would get some people locked up.<laugh>

But it's just a forum and the easily offended find their own way around eventually and know where not to look. :)

Shiny, This is not an argument that I am likely to win as BB highlighted in his post but where do you draw the line as for decency and morals I wont go there.

Its also not a rare crime. I am not sure what the stats are in Toronto (I assume that is where you currently reside) but just to give some perspective, this is a crime that affects another American across your border every two minutes. Nearly half of these survivors are under the age of 18!

I agree Shiny that we live in a time where the nimbies rule however in this case, the problem with joking about sexual violence and rape is that it’s just not funny. It’s a very serious crime; joking about it can not only be damaging to those who have impacted by sexual assault but affect friends and family.

Massive and especially WIZ should consider making it uncool and lead by example. ie Don’t joke about rape or sexual assault or use those terms to talk about anything other than the actual crime.Although again I now do not hold out much hope given what BB said about WIZ and Massive.

As an individual I feel it is important to stand up for what is right. So when I saw a fellow forum member making a joke or talking about this violent crime in a way that made me feel uncomfortable, I felt it was time to say something and voice my opinion.I hope you understand that it makes me feel uncomfortable and it’s not something that I personally agree with.

By Joking about it you’re just making it a social norm that its ok to use terms like that where the opposite is true. Sometimes we hear people or friends use a phrase which is considered racist, especially the older generation Its easy to use a phrase such as “Comon, we’re just not saying that anymore.” Its completely non threatening, We’ve seen that approach used on other derogatory comments or words that people use in our culture.

“Acceptance of rape myths is not just a product of a sick mind, but an unfortunate response to subtle and not-so-subtle messages from social groups, family, and media that communicate the legitimacy of these beliefs … this research does not suggest that anyone who holds erroneous beliefs about the causes of rape will go on to commit rape. But these beliefs can nonetheless contribute to a culture where rape victims are more likely to be questioned and blamed (and to question and blame themselves), and perpetrators are more likely to be excused or even encouraged.” [Source JFD 2012 She Asked For It: The Destructive Impact of Rape Mythology]

I doubt very much if Massive or WIZ even give the following excellent comment by P49 a second thought when they post on a forum or consider the impact of a remark make if it is appropriate for younger eyes!

Thanks to BB who posted
It should not stop the question as to whether the comment is appropriate and perhaps make them consider what impact of there words or statement has on others, who may read the post and the next time they may even self censor.

Or as Jonnie Marbles said
“Just please, please stop telling rape jokes”

Appreciate the comments made.

Personally I think that WIZ and Massive are both

This should not be considered an ageist comment smile.png

Im trying to talk as a mod and as a normal member so forgive the politician talk.

Carry-On, you make an interesting point. It shouldnt be acceptable. Years ago it wouldnt be acceptable. But in todays society for to many people, it is acceptable. I am told that back in the day (ask P49 ;)) that the line not cross was the same for everyone. Now though that line not to cross depends on the person making the comment and depends on others who may be reading the comment.

However, I hold my hands up and say I am guilty of saying similar jokes. I see both sides of this. It is just a joke and personally I found it funny as I knew it was just a joke. I am sure if he was being serious then it wouldnt be funny as I could see how this would easily offend someone.

I would say if this was on the BBC606 then that joke wouldnt last long as it would have been removed. But NOT606 is the opposite to the BBC606 hense the name NOT in the title. The BBC606 was a place where you can: Comment - Debate - Create. NOT606 is the same: Comment - Debate - Create - FREELY, meaning less moderation. Self moderation. Basically - anything goes.

So if the City board accepts these jokes then thats up to them. I am sure if their members became unhappy with certain material then they will let their mods know about it. We are only but guests on their board as they are on our board. So either ignore it and let them get on with it or dont go over their board. It is sad in saying that but if you want to protect yourself from getting offended then maybe that is best.

As for the replies from some on their board, Maybe they could have worded it better but they were on the defensive and some peoples best form of defense is attack. Dont let them get you down <ok>

If you do think however that something is offensive from me or other mods or from any member that shouldnt be accepted then you can always complain to the supermods - brb and poshminx.

I will also send you Carry-On a PM when I get chance. Will be by the end of the night <ok>
