These incidents are measured on how much impact they have on the world in the aftermath.

That was a disaster for the economies of the countries in South East Asia, but they're recovering now. You're right, the loss of life was shocking.

As i said, because of 9/11, we went to war and it won't stop just because we're pulling out of Afghanistan.

On the subject of saturation of the media, what do you expect when they'd had round the clock coverage of reporters camping outside a hospital waiting for a woman to give birth? This from someone who doesn't mind the Royals. This at least is actual news.

Rememberance, a decade on, is fine with me.

It's also the 40th anniversary of the Pinochet coup in Chile - a disaster for democracy and for thousands tortured and killed by a right-wing dictatorship.

I enjoyed it, it's not the same as your average action film, but I found it interesting.

No thoughts on the anniversaries of events where millions were killed by a left-wing dictatorship, like in Cambodia? Or the many others. Presumably only right wing ones are to be frowned upon. The amount killed in Chile was small fry in comparison.

It will be soon 100 years for one of the biggest disasters which lead to the the deaths of tens of millions, the Russian Revolution. And of course will anyone be thinking of the 800,000 Rwandans massacared in the space of a few weeks? But of course Pinochet was the one we should all remember when it comes to murderous deeds.

Someone earlier mentioned the tsunami was the biggest disaster in his lifetime because of the numbers. He must be fairly young.

The Russian Revolution didn't begin until 1917, so it's a few years yet.

Next year it will be 100 years since the First World War started.

I'm 18. Most things from the 90s are just a blur to me, apart from the music.

I mentioned it because it was the 40th anniversary today.

Sure - Pol Pot murdered millions - you could always look up the relevant date/s and let us all know. Why don't you?
Same with the Rwandans - but remember it was the Belgians who set up the Tutsi as superior to the (more numerous) Hutus.
It's the 100 years of the First World War next year. Earlier than the Bolsheviks kicked off.
You could just go on and on.

    Feel free to do so......

P.S. - re:Chile - According to various reports and investigations 1,200–3,200 people were killed, up to 80,000 were interned, and up to 30,000 were tortured by his government including women and children.
