Liverpool legend Jan Molby believes something obviously went wrong in the development of Liverpool's new £15m signing Mamadou Sakho.

Writing in the Liverpool Echo, Molby notes that Sakho was made Paris St Germain captain aged just 17, but his career since then has stalled and possibly even regressed.

The France international first lost the captaincy and then his place in the team following the Qatari takeover of the Parisian club, with Thiago Silva and Alex preferred.

Liverpool snapped him up for £15m on transfer deadline day, but Molby believes he's not the big-money signing Anfield fans had hoped for.

"Something obviously went wrong when you look at where he was at the age of 17 [when he was made Paris St Germain captain]," said Molby.

"But he is still only 23 and if he can recapture that early form he will flourish. He is big, strong, quick - all the attributes needed to succeed in the Premier League."

And he questioned the wisdom of spending so much money on an area of the squad Liverpool look relatively strong in.

The Reds have kept clean sheets in their first three Premier League matches - against Stoke, Manchester United and Aston Villa - but still spent close to £20m on Tiago Ilori and Sakho.

"When you kick off the season with three successive clean sheets, it's a little bit surprising to see two centre-backs added to the squad on transfer deadline day.

"Sakho might have cost £15m but he isn't the marquee signing we've chased all summer.

"With all due respect, there weren't any queues outside the club shop on Tuesday morning to buy shirts with his name on the back.

"A marquee signing is someone who gets you out of your seat like Mesut Ozil, Willian or Henrikh Mkhitaryan."

That is a reference to the transfer business of Arsenal and Chelsea - the Gunners snapped up Mesut Ozil for a club record £42.5m fee on deadline day while Jose Mourinho signed Willian from Anzhi.

Borussia Dortmund signed Mkhitaryan - a one-time Liverpool target - from Shakhtar Donetsk in July.

    --------------

Thoughts? I think he's talking out his arse here.

For instance, "Mesut Ozil, Willian or Henrikh Mkhitaryan" two of those didnt want to come here and join us and one wouldnt have

And I dont think we were particuarly strong at centre back, we all **** ourselves when Toure got injured. Skrtel come in and did a grand job obv but with Coates injured (not that he'll make it with us) and Carra retiring we needed to add here

He's a good signing. Everything he said is a matter of opinion. It went downhill for Sakho when the big bucks came in, big money clubs is a graveyard for young talent.

Good point. Most people I've spoken to who've seen anything of Sakho reckon he's a very good player.

Yeah and like Zingy said the sugar daddies roll in and just chuck money at everything and want the big names in there. The coaches must've thought something about not playing him though, anyway we'll see

    I think he's a good signing myself

he is totally talking rubbish i agree.

    1. suprised to see two CBs? is he paying attention.. agger has long kown issues with his back, toure got injured and coates is out. kelly is totally unfit.... in short... we needed at least one in.

2.sakho... i will not comment as to attitue but we can see that two megabucks cbs were bought by PSG and frnakly him not signing a new contract = exit....

If he knows something about his attitude of off field stuff he should have said it but it just sounds pedantic to me.

He has a point worth debating but I'd argue being captain of PSG at 17 says a hell of a lot about his natural ability as a player and I'd argue we were ridiculously weak at CB with a couple of injuries.. From what I've seen and read about Sakho he sounds like a lad who needed a fresh challenge. What relevance the size of the queue outside the club shop has I don't know. How many queued for Hyypia when he signed? Was Coutinho a "marquee signing"?

Surely all we really care about is how a player performs for us. If he's rubbish then it looks expensive...if he turns out to be a beast he'll look like a bargain....and the queue for his name next year will be round Stanley Park <ok>

  10. Wouldn't Sakho's stalement/regress coincide with PSG's millions? The captaincy and first team place parts were definitely effected

Yeah this is complete nonsense. We already have a fairly ample amount of depth in the front 3 places and we were lacking somewhat at the back, bringing in a player who seems capable of being a world-class centre back shouldn't be a topic of debate. It's fantastic that we have Agger, Toure and Sakho all more than capable at filling in when required.

If we had signed a 'marquee' signing for the forward positions who would have made way? Coutinho, Sturridge or Suarez?
