Not at that time i agree. Ambition is a strange thing, do you want to prove you can go to other teams and tweak them to make a difference or do you want to prove you are good enough to rebuild time and time again to keep your club at the top.

From the likelihood of united winning titles we have shifted the discussion to the merits of SAF. Again, if we are arguing that SAF was good but not that exceptional, then his leaving should not make that much of a difference. You cannot have your cake and eat it.

Only two managers have won the Champions league twice with the same team, they are Frank Rijkaard and Alex Ferguson. The present Champions League format is far harder to win than the old knockout format just like the league is far harder to win than a cup.

You shifted this by saying Fergie was unambitious. SAF made a terrific difference over the years but your hope that his influence will dissapear in the space of a few months is a sign of desperate/wishful thinking.

We have turned this into a United board ? <laugh>

My fault. I should have said : the Chelsea fans cannot have their cake...rather than 'you'...<ok>

And only one manager had 20 odd years at one club.

Which did Rikjaard win two CLs with?

Has not Pep or Carlo done it too?

So you are backtracking because the comment was made by a synthetic instead of a chav?

Rikjaard did it twice with Barca, nobody else has done it in the present format.

What's the point of doing that? the Beatles did that then broke up then each member contributed some serious music in their own right. Could you imagine them doing a fergie and tweaking it for another forty years?

He knew his limitations and that's why he stayed at a club where money was no object and could bring in just about anybody who would come. Buying success was obviously his thing, people like Carlo Ancelotti, Jose, Klopp & Pepe will achieve in many countries because they have charisma unfortunately for fergie he never had that quality.

You mis -read, those that "tweak" are those that travell from one good team to another, the great one`s build teams time after time.

No the great ones prove themselves with success in different countries with different clubs. People that stay at one club lack ambition and become one trick ponies like your lad was.

To be fair, he was very successful in two leagues. Two countries in the football sense if not technically different in reality.

    This

I think we all have our views of what constitutes greatness. I suspect we won't fully agree. Some like me look at the duration at the top, the achievements, the building and rebuilding, the challenges of the modern game. Some would focus on other criteria more than others. E.g Paisley did very well but he only worked within a short period and he indeed won many titles and trophies but his challenges were not as numerous and significant as some others. Some people also focus on weaknesses: Europe, limited number of clubs (some view this as a strength as it meant building several title winning teams within the same club).

Fans will always have their biases according to which club they support and it is really unrealistic to expect a Chelsea fan to say SAF was a greater manager than Mourinho <ok>

Bit sad to chase another poster just because you think there is some hole in his argument. Perhaps Ferguson's ability to build the club as he did has laid a foundation upon which any manager should have success. They won't necessarily, of course, but should.

Surprised to see you still here tbh. I would have thought you'd have got the message the other day when a number of posters pointed out just how much they think of you and your opinion. Still, where ther is no sense there is no feeling.

Now back to the lower league boards with you.

<bigfatironysmiley>you stalk me on to every thread I make
