Torres was a lot better once Kenny was in. I think he scored 2/3 goals in 3/4 games. This would suggest that even though he was sulking prior to be sold, he would have still scored the goals had Roy employed a better style.
The word vitriol suggests extreme and bitter criticism, so I wouldn't go that far. As has been said, he was offered the job, so who can blame him for taking it? I wished him well when he left and there are no hard feelings as far as I'm concerned. The club has suffered from several years of mismanagement at boardroom level and as none of us are ( I assume) privy to their goings on, then the real culprits are open to speculation. Woy isn't a manager for a team with ambition, either at club or international level. He's a mid-table manager who can keep a team from sinking too low, but they'll never rise too high either. He did well to get Fulham to the Europy final, but then reverted to type by playing a dismally negative game and so got what he deserved imo. Like I said, no hard feelings-I just wish it had never happened.
Hodgson was doomed before he even entered the building, as a large section of your fanbase simply didn't want him. They therefore jumped on every ill judged comment & every average performance, as justification of their view that he wasn't good enough. He never stood a chance. That said, he did make some poor calls & so was therefore far from blameless in his demise, but he'd have had to have been extraordinarily brilliant to have gained true support on the terraces.
I would say he would have had to be mediocre to get some support, he deemed he should be judged after ten games and he was. Having your manager come out after a draw against a team near the bottom was a good result is not the attitude a manager should have. He doesn't seem like he could get the best out of players and it showed.
No. end of. full stop. done. enough is enough. Terrible attitude, terrible signings ( kacinilik should still be with us or at least made some money off him), losing mentality, negative and arcahic play. no.
He wouldn't stop losing games Tobes.. If you win games the fans will get on your side. But to continue to lose to the likes of Wolves, Blackpool, Northampton and then add your rubbish infront of the camera after each game its only going to end one way. Kenny had most of our backing and he got axed as well so don't think we can be blamed for his departure.
Like mentioned, he never took blame. A draw is sometimes as good as a win - those were his words. He would make inexplicable decisions, give self defeating interviews, and once slagged off the fans for expecting too much. I mean honestly, we weren't expecting first place but to claim that we should be content with mediocrity (which he only achieved late into his stint) is an insult to the fans. He would make odd comments like the friendship ones with SAF and awful decisions like selling 2 youngsters plus cash for Konchesky. He sped up the demise of the club and arrogantly claimed the fans were wrong to expect otherwise. So yes he does deserve our vitriol. He treated the fans and players arrogantly and the players got sick of it - you could see that (Gerrard missing the penalty). I believe Purslow deserves blame, Ayre deserves blame, and Rafa deserves it as well. Kenny might deserve some but he tried to right that. Parry, Hicks, and Gillette deserve tons as well.
Roy inherited a bad side? It was a side, that (minus Alonso) was very similar to the side that Rafa had taken to #2 having been in top spot for a while... just a year or two earlier. Roy brought in rubbish... complemented bad performances... ruined Pepe's playing style (trying to make him more English)... gave the team a losing mentality that we appear to have only just shook off. Wouldn't play Dagger cos dagger wouldn't hoof the ball. Roy was obsessed with old bald men... playing negatively and severely disrupted the side. I'd say Roy's 6 months (or however long he had) put us 5 years backwards. Worst of all was he kept licking Fergies arsehole... and that is frankly disgusting. I really don't remember the Souness years... wasn't that interested in footie back then (former f1 fan)... but I suspect Roy is a potential candidate for worst Liverpool manager since Shanks made the club big.
I agree with Milk - the squad wasn't that bad and it performed considerably better in the second half of that year under Kenny.
i would say Souness was worst than Roy as he tried to change things way too quickly and got rid of players before he should have done, Roy was just adding to the shiite that was already going on at the club,Souness instigated it during his spell and took over a wining team and ****ed them up,Roy took over a good team and made them shiite.
**** off! Souness was the best Liverpool manager in history lad, I won't have a word said against him, absolute genius!
comments are really interesting. I thought that just briefly before the season started there was a time where had Roy hodgson got one or two players he might have succeeded. There was I think a slight bit of wishing it'd work from some and the usual preseason optimism from others. However it went away VERY quickly. now.... souness v hodgson is not something i thought about. first souness got longer and so descended into farce over longer. Roy put LFC in the relegation zone. For me hodgson was by far the worst of the two. I can remember souness having a little purple patch at the start of one season when nicol and whelan were actually fit and his own singins were not playing. souness got a cup in one year.... so..... yeah if roy got 3 years we'd be in league one. perhaps. oh and sorry souness only changed things the rot set in under moores and you could see it in kenny's last year where players aged and he had crap coming in. souness said he changed too much too soon but the reality was he had too many old unfit guys and too much amateur hour stuff going on aorund that he only added to.
**** me, that image of Woy rubbing his fat face sends shiver down my bloody spine. BR can have my love children in contrast. What did MFG ever make of idiot features, anyone remember? GKRK
Muppet Finder, if I recall, didn't like Roy but thought Rodgers was even worse. He had stats to prove it too. At the time of conversation Rodgers did have lower win rate... etc. Of course Roy inherited a decent squad and broke it and Rodgers inherited a broken squad... so not entirely alike scenario.
