<doh> It's obvious now you say it. That'll be why all the furniture's screwed down in Star Trek. I just thought they were worried about thieves.

    What do we want?

    Time travel

    When do we want it?

    That's irrelevant

You're right, that was a mistake on my part; the waves are travelling in a free vaccuum and therefore do travel at the speed of light, but they don't when they're travelling through a material.

I don't have the answers to interdimensional travel; I certainly didn't suggest that we should be going anywhere. All I said was that if these creatures are visiting Earth from a planet millions of light years away, they wouldn't be doing it via a means we're fully capable of understanding. We don't have the technology for long distant space flight, but it doesn't mean some other species elsewhere doesn't. You seem to be reading into something that isn't there. I never mentioned worm holes, dark energy or anything else of the sort. We think we're the masters of our own world, that there's nothing we don't know about ourselves. How humbled would we feel if we were told that our belief in the universe was completely wrong or worse? It's not just what we don't know, it's what we aren't even capable of knowing and I imagine that will frustrate some people a lot.

If the woman who had her cigarettes hidden was part of that documentary by Channel 4, I saw it and it was completley awful. It took a lot of courage for those people to appear on television and whether or not what was happening to them was real, it was shameful treatment to make them look like freaks and charlatans. As I said before, I've met people who have experienced the abduction phenomenon and they aren't crazy (although again, you have to judge each case on its merits). In fact one of them was an executive of a very large international company. The thing is, these people aren't seeking fame or fortune, they're just trying to understand what's happening to them (alien or not) and it isn't their prerogative for you to believe them - they're convinced it happened to them and somebody coming up to them in the street and calling them mental isn't going to make them turn around and go "yeah, **** it, you're right".

Wouldn't travelling sideways through time essentially be teleportation?

I've actually taken part in studies about sleep paralysis, so talk from personal experience about one possible explanation. The Channel 4 programme was comedy gold.

I do believe humans will be capable of travelling 7% the speed of light using explosive nuclear explosions for propulsion

In answer to the OP, I'd guess we'd be marked as 'cynical'?

I haven't read through the 9 knacking pages of this so don't know what has already been said but to me, the idea that no other life form exists on the millions of stars out there is preposterous. The sheer numbers say life must exist elsewhere than on 1 rock. Now I'm not saying they've visited earth and carried out experiments on slack-jawed Texans, that's a completely different point...

If this discussion ever got onto ghosts then that is a ****ing ridiculous concept.

Indeed. But until then we will still need 1.21 gigawatts of elastic trickery to achieve time travel. Whether we could achieve space travel and abduct Tommy again is another matter.
