You friend is quite right! the term Welsh is indeed Anglo-Saxon, and it means foreigner, which when you think about it, is a bloody cheek, but what else would you expect from from these Germanic self indulgent bell ends!...................
Indeed. I tried to teach myself some Welsh a few years back after our school got a supply teacher from Wrexham. I gave up after an hour. Also discovered a Scottish name in my family tree (though the person was born in Yorkshire), so maybe a little further back I'm part Jock as well. I'm like a Home Nations genetic melting pot. Wales is an easy target for piss taking, but I've always wanted them to do well in the football. Likewise Scotland and the two Irish nations. I think a lot of you Welsh, Scots, Irish and Ulstermen think it's patronising, but I'm just a really ****ing lovely guy There are places all across Europe which have names from the same root. Hell, there are towns and villages across England that have names beginning with Wal- He's not one of those hilarious Welsh-nationalists who can't speak a word of Welsh apart from the words 'Cymru' and 'Cymraeg', is he? Does he wander around shouting, "Boo! Get the English out of Cymru! No, I don't speak Cymraeg, but I'm proud to be from Cymru nonetheless!". I've met the type before.
Quick history lesson The original British were in fact the Celts, therefore if we were to have a Team GB as such the English (Anglo Saxons) would not be included, if you want to read up on the this then take a look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Britons_(Celtic_people)
Oh come on Mabon, you love Team GB. I could see you hiding in the corner of Wembley with your Team GB shirt on. In all honesty I'm all for retaining the Status Quo, but can any one see Wales, England, Scotland or Northern Ireland win a World Cup or Euro's. I can't see that happening for at least another 15 + years. So it does make you think if anybody was to win would it have to be an amalgimation of all the home nations team. Greg Dyke said England need to win the 2022 world cup that won't happen, more like 2030.
I'm happy to keep it as 4 separate nations - I really wouldn't want to be part of anything the Scottish are. The sooner they devolve the happier I will be that this bitter, chip on the shoulder nation is no longer connected to me via a passport. If the English are so "Germanic" as keeps getting pointed out - how come they are not winning more world cups ? What makes a person Welsh anyway ? Being born here ? Welsh parents ? Grandparents ? How far back do you have to go. I consider myself Welsh only because I was born and grew up here. My parents did also, but I had a Scottish grandmother on one side of the family and an English grandfather on the other...... I would guess the number of people who can say they have only Welsh ancestors is a very small number.....
Im sorry but I would rather have a **** Welsh football team than sell our souls to have a successful Team GB team. This story sounds kind of familiar doesnt it
Gareth Bale has an English granny, doesn't he? I suppose being part-Welsh/English doesn't matter to most people either side of the border. It's not like being part-black or Asian
Oh no not again! A personal view but I've been saying this for years. I've lived overseas in the U.S and Australia, and in both countries we are perceived as one nation, though Aussies tended to recognise the difference a bit more. There seems to be a perception that having a GB team would be the thin end of the wedge, that it would be the slippery slope towards us losing our Welsh identity. Sorry, that's absolute rubbish. As has been pointed out we support Welsh athletes in the GB team and they are no less Welsh. If our sportspeople are good enough they will make the team. If they aren't then they won't. Simple. Please don't come up with the old chestnut about Welsh footballers being discriminated against - that's just parochial nonsense. If those that pick the team want us to do well they will pick the best players - just like in athletics. The FAW and Welsh football in general is a laughing stock run by amateurs and we'll never do well internationally again imo. This is because we have such a small population we always produce great individuals, but never a team. Forever this will be the case. Just look at Coleman forgetting his passport yesterday. Pathetic. Even if we qualify for anything (I don't see it) then how far will we get? Not far. Just think about it - the world's most expensive footballer is unlikely to ever play on the world stage. Just like Best. It's a crime. Nationalism is getting in the way of International success no doubt, and stupid, petty, narrowmindedness with an inability to think outside the box will forever condemn Welsh football to obscurity. This doesn't make me unpatriotic or less Welsh, just (as Dai would say) a realist. Only an opinion, so be nice.
I think ppl in Australia know a hell of a lot more about the home nations than the septics do. most in the usa have no clue where any country is outside of mexico and canada
What's a septic? As I stated, my experience in Australia was that almost everyone knew about Wales (unlike the U.S) but you'd expect that because of our historical ties with them. Some of my friends there wouldn't even class me as a 'pom' but others did, whilst many Aussies follow the dreadful habit of just referring to us as 'England' and I saw this myself. But I think most Aussies pay more attention to what the U.S is doing than to the U.K anyway.
My baby girl was born here in Wales. Her mum is half Chinese and half Filipina who had a grandmother who was half Spanish half Filipina. Is my daughter Welsh ? She would be able to represent Wales should she grow up and have a talent for something.
Stereo, I think it goes beyond passports. It's how you 'feel' as a person. Giggs always said he never 'felt' English when asked about playing for England. I have Aussie & UK passports as do my wife and kids but we don't consider ourselves Aussies at all, even though I always have a soft spot for them and support them in sporting matters against non UK sides. Your child will be eligible for multiple passports but I suspect she will 'feel' Welsh as she was born and raised here, but will no doubt enquire into (and be proud of) her ancestry.
I daresay she could, but she wouldn't be Welsh. Wilfried Zaha can represent England, but he was born in the Ivory Coast to Ivorian parents. People always accuse me of being 'racist' or 'a bigot' when I say this. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with miscegeny, just that the resultant progeny are neither here nor there. I'm someone who puts the emphasis on ethnic make-up when it comes to defining nationality, as opposed to simply being born on a patch of land that one or both of ones parents have no ancestral connection to. In the same thread we've got a poster saying how the English aren't British because they're 'Germanic', and then you saying that your quarter-Filipino, quarter-Chinese daughter is as Welsh as anyone else. People's opinions differ greatly on this matter. Sorry if mine offends you, but hey-ho.
It doesn't offend me at all Erik but the statement "but she wouldn't be Welsh." is wrong. In law, the child is Welsh by reason of birth - she was born here. That aside, she will undoubtedly 'feel' Welsh (and be Welsh) growing up in this country, whilst having other parentage which she will rightly recognise and be proud of. You don't have to be of 'pure' parentage to qualify.
Legally, yes. But then people born on airplanes are defined as having been born in the country in which said plane is registered. So if my parents were on holiday in Berlin, and whilst flying back to East Yorkshire my mother gave birth to me on a German plane, I'd be considered German by reason of birth. As for 'feeling' Welsh, well... some people with mental health issues insist that they are Batman...
