I am sick to death of this United loving press that can't get the hint that Luka Modric is staying at spurs and we are not willing to sell our star player. It's almost like they can't accept this fact so they just make up stories everyday to try and force this transfer. Wouldn't suprise me if Fergie has the Press in his pocket like he does the Refs. The most hilarious one is Joe cole to replace modric. I'm sorry but Levy and Harry are not this stupid and they know their would be a riot with spurs fans if this were to happen. Modric was interviewed over the weekend during international break and he has come out and said he's definetly staying at spurs and loves the fans. Funny how the press are not all over this interview though hey? anyway heres the interview to give us spurs fans peace of mind. I have posted this already but will post again.....

Full interview if the links not working.....

On the radar of Manchester United, Croatian midfielder Luka Modric tells DNA that for now he is staying with Tottenham Hotspur as he believes the club can achieve a lot of bigger things.

You’ve adapted well in the Premier League considering you are not the biggest person to be playing in such a hard area of the pitch?
It is true. In the beginning, when I came here, I had some problems in adapting. I needed maybe one month, two months... To begin with, we had bad results and that was also a problem for me. But when Harry Redknapp came, he started putting me on the left with more freedom or behind the striker and then I started playing better and better. Last year, for the first time, he decided to put me in the middle against Stoke and we won. I played really well in that position. After that, we had three hard games against Chelsea, Arsenal and then Man City away and we qualified for a Champions League spot. He also put me in the middle for those games and he was happy. I said this position suits me best maybe because I play there in Croatia all the time and I didn’t have any problems finding myself in that position. I wasn’t worried about it being hard for me.

How hard will it be not being in the Champions League having had great nights against the Milan teams?
It will be hard because being in the Champions League for the first time, we did a great job and played some great games against big teams. We enjoyed it, but we didn’t manage to qualify and it is going to be hard watching on television next season. We need to prepare and try again forthe fourth spot, maybe third or second — I don’t know. If we hadn’t had that bad run in the last two-and-a half months, we could have been in the top two or three easily, but we had a bad run and that is football.

Why do you think that happened?
I don’t know, I think, we played well in a lot of games but couldn’t manage to win or kill the game when we needed to. Maybe some injuries, or we were a little tired from playing a lot of hard games.

It does sound like your intention is to stick with Tottenham?
Yes, it is true. I am happy and enjoying it here. The fans are amazing, the club is amazing, My fellow Croatians are here — I am not missing anything. I think this club can achieve a lot of great things, I think we can fight for trophies, the EPL or cups. Like I said, I am happy here and not thinking about anything else.

You have a contract until 2016?
Yes, I signed it last summer. It is important to commit yourself to the club that pays you and treats you well.

When you played in Bosnia you said you could play anywhere. Once you arrived in England did you worry that it might have been a bit premature?
Yes, I did think it that way, I said it was a hard league and I was young — 17-years-old — when I played there. It does not have the quality of EPL but it helped in making me stronger. When I first came here to England, everything was so quick! I remember in my first game at White Hart Lane, everything was so fast, I heard it in my ears, you know a sort of whoosh, some noises in my ears that made it cloudy... and I knew I needed to change a little bit, start playing quicker and releasing the ball quicker. Afterwards, game by game, I felt better and better.

Who has been your toughest opponent, either in Europe or the EPL?
It was hard playing against Real Madrid and also against AC Milan at home. It was tough against Xabi Alonso but from the English league it is always hard playing against the likes of Scott Parker, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard.

As a creative player, you would always be kicked and it has been said that your father made you wooden shin pads — is that true?
No, it isn’t true! I don’t know where it came from. I’ve always had shin pads like everyone else. Getting kicked makes you tougher and that is good.

Arsene Wenger questioned whether you could cope with the physical side of the English game at Euro 2008?
I think he was not the only one to question whether I could make it in a hard league like EPL. Those people gave me more determination to show everyone that I could cope with the EPL and its demands.

Beyond going out and playing hard, you don’t look like you’ve been in the gym?
My father is strong in his legs and I get that from him. Maybe that is the reason why I am strong in the tackle. I have talked about going to the gym for two or three months, but stopped after one month because it is not for me. You need the gym for some strengthening, but not for weights — I don’t like them.

People from your part of the world seem to have an inner strength, perhaps because of the journey you’ve all had to come through. There seems to be a determination in the Croats...
It is true, we have got that in ourselves because of things that have happened and the war also made us stronger than other people maybe. What we have been through wasn’t easy. But everything made us tougher and stronger and sometimes if it is hard in your life and something has happened that doesn’t break you, it makes you tougher. It is hard to break us.

Your father (Stipe) used his pay from the army to send you to a football school?
Yes, it is true. Before we had a football school and at the time it was 500 German Marks if you wanted to go there for 10 days. My father paid it. It was a lot of money at that time and that could have bought a lot of food. He always tried to find a way to help me and put me into football schools. He always managed to find a way. I have a strong relationship with my family (parents and two sisters) and we talk every day on the phone.

    Nobody knows much about you?
No special reason. I am quiet and that is it. I don’t like to talk too much in the media. I am a football player and just want to play football, not do magazines or other stuff. I don’t like it. I am a family man with a son of 11 months — I am happy and enjoying my life.

It's probably the only way that QPR will stay up,they will go straight back down if they don't do something.

I love the part about how he found the EPL too fast in his first game and then just manned up! Legend!

Thanks Don for posting this. Very reassuring. He does sound like a top fella, agree with other posters that we could do with a few more in the EPL with his attitude. He single-handledly dragged us to victory in a few games last season and we desperately need to keep him.

Yes you're right about the Fergie loving press but Man U only need one bad season and the press would soon fall out of love with him and them. They are fickle like that. I don't see Modric as a Man U player as I didn't Berbatov. Imo he wasn't totally successful there and didn't quite fit in whereas he did with us. Not to say that I'd want him back long term though. To get us back into the CL it might be a good idea for one season.

This is also making my blood boil!

Which bit of "He's NOT for sale" don't they understand!!!

On 4th June in the Mail Online, from reporter Joe Bernstein:

"Cole’s move could pave the way for Luka Modric to make a £28million switch to Manchester United. Spurs could be tempted to sell (Luka Modric) and bring in transfer funds after landing a like-for-like replacement in Cole. The player has also indicated that he would like to move to Old Trafford to play Champions League football again."

BullSh*t. Where and when has Luka Modric said "that he would like to move to Old Trafford"? This isn't journalism. They are making it up to unsettle our player.

    Today from the Sun:

"a top White Hart Lane source says a deal will be inevitable. He said: "The word is that Sir Alex has already spoken directly to Harry and said how much he admires Modric and how much he wants him.
And as much as Harry wants to keep him he knows United can make an offer we just can't refuse.
So Harry's busy now trying to do the Joe Cole deal to bring in a new playmaker to compensate for the expected departure of Luka."

Does anyone actually believe this "top White Hart Lane source" rubbish?

There should be a law against using tabloid hacks to do tapping-up for Man U.

Some of you may be a little naive and wet behind the ears if you actually believe anything a footballer says in an interview as interviews like that are so the player can say what the fans want to hear, not what they honestly believe as Modric may well be happy at spurs but that doesn't mean he is going to stay as footballers are ambitious and if Modric gets the chance to play for the league champions, replace paul scholes and play champions league football each year and Levy gets 30 odd million for him then I would be surprised if he stays.

And anyway, why let the press wind you up, its their job to print "stories" & "rumours" and i'm sure people like the author don't mind when they print stories about us wanting players from other clubs.

Modric won't leave during this transfer window. If we don't make top 4 next season, we'll lose our top boys.

    Vital season is next years.

Hope Harry gets in some class and ships out some deadweight.

No-one minds when other fans and managers admire other team's players. I think the OP was complaining about tabloids printing lies along the lines of:

"Spurs could be tempted to sell (Luka Modric) and bring in transfer funds after landing a like-for-like replacement in Cole. The player has also indicated that he would like to move to Old Trafford to play Champions League football again."

He simply hasn't said that, and to imply that he has is either slap-dash and poorly informed journalism, or worse still, a deliberate inaccuracy aimed at planting the thought in peoples's heads that our most key player wants to leave us and go to one of our main top-six rivals. Whether he does or doesn't, he simply hasn't said so and to indicate otherwise is wrong

Anyway, where is "make an offer we can't refuse" nonsense coming from? Financially, we don't need to make roughly £30 mill from a player sale and we don't need to drastically slash our wage bill to bring in new players. The fact is that we don't need to sell our best players, and from what we are hearing they don't want to leave right now. When you add in the excellent relationship that Bale and Modric seem to have with Harry, then no matter how much money is thrown at us there is no need, requirement, or desire in any way to sell any of our stars.

Give it a rest, you Manc tarts.
It's clearly another one of Ferguson's tapping up campaigns, conducted through a few of his mates in the press, in return for some nice stories about ManYoo and a couple of exclusive interviews.
He does it every bloody year.

Redknapp needs to learn when to say nothing about something in the press, but he always says nice things about virtually every player that he's asked about.
He's still wrong to mention anyone, though.

Still, it distracts from the latest story about one of your players having an affair or a hair transplant though, doesn't it?

@ Bigjohnny, will you shut up. Your the most negative arrogant spurs fan on here and the only reason you come on here is to bash other peoples opinions. How are we wet behind the ears? What because we share optimism because our star man Modric has basically confirmed he's staying at the club? It's completely different to our situation with transfers. For one Fergie basically tapped Modric up a long time ago when he come out in the press telling the whole world how much he admires Modric. Now before you turn around and say "Harry does it aswell" ..... True but most the time if not all he gets asked the question by the media about certain players and he gives his honest opinion. Alex ferguson just comes out with his comments about our player in a clear sly attempt to set the ball rolling....... Typical scheming alex ferguson!!!! Now my main complaint is the fact that Modric has come out this weekend with a real positive interview about the club and how he wants to stay....... the press don't seem to have picked up on this! I wonder why? Because their so desperate for spurs to lose their best player. Modric is not the typical footballer character and he's hardly going to commit himself to the club then suddenly leave as loyalty is clearly part of his character judging by his comments. Levy and Redknapp have both promised the fans "key players wont be getting sold"..... what part of that don't you understand? Modric coming out confirming he's staying this weekend and Levy + Redknapp confirming long ago we won't be selling any of our key players........ Oh but bigjohnny still believes modric will go and us spurs fans are "wet behind the ears" .....
