For me, Marysville Place, a 110 year old renovated cotton mill that boasts big offices with large windows, doors you can lock - not cubicles, which is the modern government standard issue for new office construction, with workers occupying small cubicles and 4 ft high dividers allowing no privacy and the boss in a glassed in "fish bowl" of an office. My wife just moved into one of these modern concept buildings - she's the fish and her staff hate their new space having moved from individual offices.
For me, a building designed by Sir Norman Foster. Huge great glass atrium, loads of open plan spaces and lounge areas alongside meeting spaces and stuff.......
Depends on my placements but can be a ward, clinic or theatre. October I am in a surgical unit so should be fun.
Over here in Canada, Dec, Jan & Feb we are generally freezing our butts off, and May - Aug, black flies & mosquitoes can eat you alive in the great outdoors (plus bears, coyotes etc.). I used to work as a field surveyor in BC & NB so got a fair old taste of life in the wild - certainly keeps you fit though!
As a builder, with the construction market being shot for the last couple of years, we do a lot of maintenance for Defence government housing / Public trustee. We also do a lot of residential maintenance for rental rolls which tend to bring out the worst in people. Many of the rentals we go into reek of urine, have rubbish all over the floor and have been trashed. For a while there, we seemed to do one after another when finally, I went into a house to re-tile the bathroom and I actually thanked the guy for keeping his place nice and clean and free from any bad stains & smells, etc. May be fair to say that society in general has lost it's self respect these areas. Years ago, you may come across one or two trashy houses out of one hundred. Nowadays, it could easily be 50-50 which is a sad reflection on todays' society. I better not get on my soapbox, ha! Anyway, nearly everyday I go into someone's home or office to do some maintenance or renovation. I get to meet all type of people. From the very rich to the very poor, all soughts of characters.
I service water mains for Brisbane water. (QUU ) work outdoors. I have to say working in QLD makes my job a pressure. I am lucky enough to be living the dream
I've got a good mate who's a builder over in Perth, Aussie. Says the same thing about the market, though he's busy enough. What's happened over there? Last time I was over, end of 2011, seemed like the boom years would never end.
Hi 'sb_73' ......................... History will show that Sydney and Melbourne handle the boom bust, better than the other states but even there, construction is slower. I live on the Gold Coast and like 99.9% of tradies, we travel up the highway every morning to chase the work in Brisbane. You may have just seen the tail end of it when you were over. I haven't built on the Coast for 2.5 years and that does not look like changing any time soon. I'm also told 30,000 tradies drive up the highway to Brisbane, everyday. The traffic is horrendous. There is no work on the Coast ......................... greatest place to live if you don't have to rely on work.
my place of work is a 22 tonne concrete truck(when loaded) delivering anywhere in the wellington region windfarm coming up soon 700 metres straight into a hole
That's an awful lot of concrete for one hole, Kiwi ......................... someone looking to bury a few politicians, perhaps?
