To clarify I wasn't suggesting he was responsible for the pay structure, just that it will act as a deterrent to more established players signing.
Yup. From 6th to 7th place in two seasons with an 8th placed finish sandwiched in the middle. Superb. All hail Ian Ayre the genius.
Started well Lost his way with three big missed targets Redeemed himself somewhat at the death. Will let him stay.for now
So came on give us chapter and verse as to how it's down to Ayre that these 3 supposed targets were missed.
How many times does this has to be said? HR - chose CL and league runners up over 7th place no Europe Costa - release clause met, athletico were so keen to keep him they gave him a nice new fat contract Willian - is anyone not glad we didn't price match this ****er?? He completed his medical with spurs then sat back and waited for Chelsea to come him! Utter **** IMO
TBF he has had 3 different managers in that time. One telling him that Poulsen was the answer to our defensive problems, One saying that Carroll was the next big thing, and another saying that Allen would reinvigorate our midfield. Lets not forget that in that period we have also signed Suarez one of the best players in Europe, Studge the best forward in the Prem currently, Coutinho who could be the next Xavi all for decent fees and he looks to have signed a few good ones this window too!
You can't credit him for signing certain players but ignore the other transfers (the poor ones) And to me the fact we missed out on Sigurdsson & Dempsey last season and Willian, Costa & Mkhitaryan this season makes me think we aren't quite as good as we should be as closing these deals off. 1 or 2 could be coincidence, but 5 players in 2 summers is quite odd.
Is this OP for real? I thought reading it at first that it must have been some parody/mickey taking. But then I sensed that the OP meant it to be serious... We just had the closure of a transfer window. Buying and selling players not a tournament. Their value and contribution to their clubs and the ultimate outcome (trophies, CL places etc) is yet to occur. Do teams and people get prizes for making the best or most expensive purchase: do Arsenal get a special prize for buying Ozil for a massive £42.5 million? Do Real get a trophy for paying £85m (and £300k/week) for Bale? Both are over priced IMO. United have had a rubbish transfer window and bought only one top player despite chasing many across Europe, showing how awful they have been at this game. Is this deserving of a special pat in the back and recognition to your CEO? Is it not too early despite Liverpool being top (after 3 matches)? In case I get accused of being bitter, I am cool about this because I recognise that Moyes is inexperienced at that level and he will learn the lessons. Woodward has been absolute rubbish. But in the end it is preferable not to buy at all rather than buy inappropriate players in a panic. So just wondering whether this thread should not have waited and may be posted in April or May?
You know when you go to a wedding and an argument breaks-out between members of the same family that it's more than silly to get caught in the middle. Well this is a case in point where Mancs are not really needed. This whole thread revolves around an internal spat. It's not an evaluation of how good the players we signed are or how well they might perform. It's all about differing perceptions of the transfer process itself and Ian Ayre's involvement in it.
lol, So you want to judge him on players that don't want to sign for us!! might as well throw CR and Messi in there too!! The fact is we are going to miss out on some players because we haven't got CL football or the money that it brings. I'm perfectly happy of how we have conducted ourselves in the transfer market this summer. We got some players in early that we knew we needed and waited till we'd played a few games so we knew where the cracks needed filling. Fine we didn't get the marque signing we wanted but we went in for some decent players who turned us down don't see there's a lot more we could have done, other than massively overpaying which hasn't worked for us in the recent past.
I'm not a fan of Ayre but even I won't blame him for missing out on those big signings this summer. Also, I recognise that he is learning on the job and learning from mistakes, as is the club in general.
Very happy with the strengthening to the CB position, I think we have one of the best strength in depth in this position now.
This is getting beyond a joke! Ian Ayre is CEO of Liverpool Football Club. He is not the Commercial Director and he is certainly not a Director of Football. Yet some on here are trying to make judgements on actions that he may have not worked directly upon. Can some of you please wake up - Ian Ayre is not the main negotiator for LFC! He will however control the terms that can and cannot be offered.
Who is the main negotiator for LFC? Due to his commercial background, I would have thought he'd be heavily involved, as would Billy Hogan.
As Billy Hogan is the Commercial Director I would have assumed that it was him who took the lead in the actual negotiations. We do know for certain that was the case in the Willian discussions. However what is negotiated by whoever, it is Ian Ayre that will have to 'sign-off' any deal.
I'll say again, I like the way we're doing business, we have limits to what we'll pay for a player, be it the fee and wages and we're sticking to them, no fault of Andy's but I never want to see us bent over a barrel again when it comes to transfer dealings. These limits will remain the longer we're out of Europe/CL, if/when we have that extra money to spend I still hope we're sensible and stick to our game plan, with CL football, roles will be reversed, in that we won't need to throw money at the signings, the lure of CL will be of interest to the players we'd want to sign (unless their mercenaries like Willian).
Using Coutinho, Sturridge, Toure and Sakho as examples, there is definite quality in the market at competitive prices. And as you say, we could have got Willian and Soldado but we refused to up our bids. Good players no doubt are they really worth the premium?
I hate bean counters. I've been plagued by them for almost the whole of my managerial career. But I do know that it's vital that any organisation has a sound financial base and doesn't go tilting at rainbows! Despite what the press says, there are loads of players out there. No one player is truly worthy of breaking the bank for - and you can include Messi and Bale in that! LFC have started on a long developmental road. Lots of money is going to be spent, some of it is going to be wasted. However, it is as vital that they keep tight control of the money whilst still trying to achieve the dream.
