Spurs come into the match in 6 place in the table on 6 points with the Canaries in 9th place on 4 points. This will be the 81st time the two teams have met. Norwich City were founded in 1902 by three former Norwich Church of England Young Men's Society players. The club lost their amateur status in 1905 and joined the Southern League shortly afterwards. The first meeting between Spurs and Norwich came in April 1906 in the Southern League and the East Anglian club won 4-1 at White Hart Lane. The reverse fixture at Newmarket Road was won by Spurs 3-0. Vivian Woodward scored three goals for Spurs against Norwich that season. The clubs met for two further seasons in the Southern League, resulting in two wins for Norwich, a win for Spurs and a drawn match. Spurs joined the Football League for season 1908-09 and the next meeting with Norwich came in the old second round (today's fourth round) of the FA Cup in January 1915 at "The Nest" in Rosary Road, resulting in a 3-2 win for the Canaries. Four friendlies were played between 1916 and 1925 with Spurs winning two games, Norwich one and one drawn game. The first Football League meeting between the two clubs came in the Second Division in December 1935 with Spurs winning 2-1 at the Lane, while Norwich won the reverse fixture 1-0 in April 1936 at their new home in Carrow Road. The clubs met for a further three seasons in Division Two resulting in four wins for Spurs and two for Norwich. During World War Two, Spurs & Norwich played two matches in the Football League South. An FA Cup fifth round match in February 1959 ended in a 1-1 draw at White Hart Lane and Norwich pulled-off a 'giant killing' act by beating Spurs 1-0 in the replay at Carrow Road. The first meeting in the Top Flight of English Football came in October 1972 when a Martin Chivers goal at Carrow Road wasn't enough to prevent a 2-1 win for Norwich. The clubs contested the 1973 Football League Cup Final at Wembley and a Ralph Coates goal was enough to bring the silverware to White Hart Lane. Martin Chivers scored a brace in Tottenham's 3-1 win against Norwich in the reverse First Division fixture at the Lane a week later. The clubs met regularly in Division One from season 1973-74 to 1991-92 with honours being generally even. Both Spurs and Norwich were founder members of the Premier League in 1992-93, but the Canaries lost their top flight status after the 1994-95 season and returned for one season in 2004-05. Spurs won 6 of the 10 Premier League matches played with Norwich winning twice and two drawn games. The clubs met in a pre-season friendly at Carrow Road in July 2008 with Darren Bent scoring four goals in a 5-1 Spurs win. The fixture at Carrow Road in December 2011 resulted in a rather comfortable 2-0 away win for Spurs, thanks to a brace of goals scored by Gareth Bale in the 55th and 67th minutes. Things were rather different for the reverse fixture at White Hart Lane in April 2012 with Spurs losing 1-2 to Norwich. Jermain Defoe scored for Spurs with Anthony Pilkington and Elliott Bennett netting for the Canaries in a match which would prove vital for Tottenham's Champions League qualification chances. During the Summer of 2012, former Spurs player and assistant manager Chris Hughton was appointed Norwich manager, Cameroon defender Sebastien Bassong moved from Spurs to Norwich for a £3,750,000 transfer fee and Spurs striker Harry Kane joined Norwich on a season's loan. The Premier League match at White Hart Lane in September resulted in a 1-1 draw with Mousa Dembele putting Spurs ahead after 68 minutes only for Robert Snodgrass to score a late equaliser with just five minutes remaining. The clubs met in the 4th Round of the Football League (Capital One) Cup at Carrow Road at the end of October and Gareth Bale put Spurs ahead in the 66th minute. An own goal from Jan Vertonghen, who deflected an Alex Tettey shot, levelled matters after 84 minutes and Norwich progressed to the 5th Round through a Simeon Jackson goal three minutes later. The game at White Hart Lane in January 2013 ended with honours even after a 1-1 draw. Wes Hoolahan put the visitors ahead after 32 minutes but a stunning solo goal from Gareth Bale ten minutes from time shared the points. Overall, Spurs have won 34, Norwich have won 24 and 22 of the 80 matches between the two clubs have been drawn. please log in to view this image Full History of Tottenham Hotspur v Norwich City Matches 1906-2013 please log in to view this image They Played for Spurs & Norwich.... Tough one this, one we should win on paper but we couldn't get it done last season home or away and only avoided defeat at home thanks to a certain player we no longer have.
We haven't beat NCFC at home since they've returned to the Prem. Lost 2-1 and drew 1-1 in past two seasons. Having said that, I think it'll be 3rd time lucky, especially with the likelihood of Lamela and Eriksen both starting who I think will cause damage immediately. Hope we line up as: Lloris, Walker, Kaboul, Vertonghen, Rose Sandro, Paulinho Lamela, Eriksen, Chadli Soldado
A bit early for Eriksen and Lamela? AVB has history of easing new guys in, and with the International break they won't have been able to do much work together. Perhaps Holtby and Townsend for this one, with the other 2 off the bench.
After the lack of goals and creativity, I think they need to come in straight away. Eriksen especially, we need creativity and he's in better shape than Holtby too so I'd definitely start him. Lamela's our record signing so it's fair to say the fans will start to get really pissed if AVB tries doing a Lloris with a £30m player - which I don't think he'll do to be honest. With all respect to Norwich, a home against them is a good game to get blooded in, I'd understand if it were Utd/ Chelsea but we've bought these players to improve us and they'll only be able to do that with a lot of game time.
I can't see Eriksen or Lamela being benched for that long. We've shelled out £30m on Lamela, I highly doubt he'll be benched for a month. He's seen as the main player to replace Bale (even got his bloody shirt ) so I'd be very surprised if he isn't starting vs Norwich. As for Eriksen, we've been dying for some creativity, he's the perfect player for our number 10 and is actually in a better condition that Holtby. He's already played 4 games for Ajax and scored 2 goals, Holtby's had no pre-season and has only had 1 Europa and 2 U-21 matches, add to the fact Holtby hasn't impressed in the League for us since joining, I don't see the risk in starting Eriksen immediately, he really can't do much worse in fairness.
Holtby has looked a lot better this season. He grew into the game in the Europa and scored a couple of good goals in the U21. I am anxious to see how well he'll do in the Prem this year. Despite his injury, he looks fitter this year, lost a bit of weight I would say. I hope we go 4-2-3-1 and Eriksen and Holtby rotate the No10 role. Maybe 2.1 in Eriksens favour, but Holtby to give him a rest reasonably often.
His face is definitely thinner than last season for sure. I didn't notice he was carrying weight last season but maybe he was. He looked full of ideas and running in the EL game and was actively running the attacking part of the team which was very encouraging despite the oppo.
With all respect SD, Holtby looked good against Tbilisi but so did the rest of the squad, Townsend looked like Messi when up against their full backs and the CM's easily bossed the midfield. The u-21s can't be used as a form guide either otherwise, Obika had a goal record even Falcao would be envious of. I'm sure Lewis can be a good player for us but right now, I'd definitely have Eriksen above in the number 10 pecking order. If Eriksen fails to impress then I'd be happy to see Holtby come in.
I absolutely agree. However he did enough to make me want to see more. May not be any better than last year, but there were at least encouraging signs.
Yeah it was definitely his best appearance in a Spurs shirt and that alone is a good sign, the way Dembele has been playing, it wouldn't surprise me if Holtby jumped above him in the pecking order for CM positions (though Paulinho and Sandro/ Capoue would be my 1st choice) as well as fighting Eriksen and Sig for the number 10. It's great to have so many options. Our best squad for yonks.
I for one would like to see more of Holtby this year. At the time of his signing, we were all impressed that Spurs picked such a promising player. It took him some time to integrate into the PL and he was trying too hard to impress by running around too much without any focus. He's looking good so far and now it's time for him to prove himself. Norwich at WHL is a good opportunity.
Garry Brady is only 36? Judging by this pic of him at Brechin, I'd add at least ten years to that... please log in to view this image
whilst i agree about players needing to bed in properly, i agree with SOS. at least one of Lamela or Eriksen need to start. probably both. something else we need to consider are free kicks and other set pieces. Ours have been woeful so far this season and we've lost our magicican, Bale. Give Eriksen a go at them both. He can take a free kick, having scored 2 for Ajax this season already and he can't be any worse at corners than we've seen for sometime.
Eriksen's also shorter and less physical than most of our players, so we'll be able to fill the box with a Stoke-esque presence. Still won't score from any of them, but the opposition might stick it in their own net in a panic or something.
This is the sort of match which I hope the team doesn't get over confident and expect to win without trying, banana skin springs to mind.
Norwich will park the bus. this could be a long afternoon unless Eriksen is as good as Roo and Sos have promised LOL
